And dreading it….!!! Just tonight I notice it’s a lot darker and cooler and just a nip in the air. I know I know we could still get another heatwave and it’s been a stunning summer but I hate the feeling of summer ending it’s such an optimistic time spring into summer I’ve loved it esp this year with all the sunshine - even though I moaned about the heat the odd time!!!!

Permanently boiling over here. June is hayfever, July is insect bites, the whole time is a nightmare for the dog, and me, because I sweat buckets on walks and have to get changed every time I come home, it's like going to the bloody gym every day. I curse this fecking heat. I can feel the shades of peri looming toward me and I need someone to complain to, it's unacceptable, I tell you!

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 30/07/2025 11:41

Are you all bonkers? It’s definitely still summer Confused

Its definitely a weird weather year for crops - Blackberries are out a full month earlier this year than last and its a very good year for them! I always thought of blackberries as an autumn berry which went with the cooking apples that fell from my Grandma's tree in late August but not anymore. After the recent rain, the grass is growing like nothing on earth - hopefully the farmers will still get a second silage cut to make up for the 50% drop in yield on their first one and the hay crop this year. The wheat/barley/oats look to be ripe early too - some fields around us have already been combined (E Midlands).
I'm going camping the last week of August (before the BH) so hoping for warm days and evenings although I expect there to be an autumn chill in the air come nightfall.

Brambles have a really long season. Though apparently if you eat them from October the devil will be in you... 😼

GasPanic · 30/07/2025 11:44

No.

It's got a bit cooler so the weather has changed not the season.

The warmest day on average in the UK is around 20th of July and of the ten warmest days on record 4 of them are in August.

Although it does feel like Autumn is around the corner today, we still have August yet to start.. so I hope (and think!) we still have a lot of sunshine and warm weather to come!

Purplebunnie · 30/07/2025 11:48

Yep, the spiders have started moving in the little bastards. Need to get the peppermint spray out

Thulpelly · 30/07/2025 12:08

SunnieShine · 29/07/2025 22:49

Round my way, too.

The leaves are yellow due to heat stress/dry soil, fruits have ripened faster.
The weather has been thankfully a bit milder but the nights are hardly ‘drawing in’. It’s not even August. Don’t wish time away.

Zippedydodah · 30/07/2025 12:26

There’s definitely an autumnal tang here on the edge of the Cotswolds, and has been for the past week or so.
Blackberries have been ripe since mid-June (at least a month earlier than usual), the blackthorn bushes are heavy with sloes, the chestnut trees are loosing their leaves ( they’re infected with a virus again), harvesting has finished around here and the swifts have left the village church and barns.

Summerholiday321 · 30/07/2025 12:42

I live by the sea and I'm just happy we took advantage of it before my child broke up from school, when it was really hot. I'm guessing we might be going to the beach after school again in early September and August will be cold.

YellowCamperVan · 30/07/2025 12:43

I wish! Can't bloomin' wait for Winter.

DappledThings · 30/07/2025 12:44

Forecast for the middle of August here (South coast) is mid 20s and uninterrupted sun. How is that vaguely Autumnal?

It's mostly cloudy here now but it's muggy and warm and when the sun does breakthrough it's blazing hot instantly. What with it being the height of summer and all.

RainSoakedNights · 30/07/2025 12:44

I have to admit, im selfishly quite excited.

im going to be off work for surgery for two weeks. You don’t want it to be too hot when recovering, but it also won’t be raining everyday! Then, im back to work for a couple weeks before im off on my holidays, and the last thing you want when youre away is for it to be sunny et home!

Robin67 · 30/07/2025 12:44

Last night I saw the first large house spider. So that part of summer is coming

Echobelly · 30/07/2025 12:45

Is the OP the same person who complained that 'summer was over' because temperatures were a bit above average in May?

MoreIcedLattePlease · 30/07/2025 12:58

You have had the driest, warmest spring to summer ever recorded, I believe? Certainly felt like it! Bugger off and let those of us who prefer the cooler times have our turn!

Blackberries out and conkers forming, leaves starting to yellow around here

Blackberries out here too

Does this work? I tried making one but I don’t think it was very effective.

Hotflushesandchilblains · 30/07/2025 16:23

Yes, a couple of trees here going colours. But I like autumn so dont mind end of summer.

Sane here. We've got a holiday booked in September!!
A summer holiday 😉

JohnTheRevelator · 30/07/2025 16:48

Nope! I'm in West London and it's distinctly warmer today than it was yesterday (20 degrees yesterday,24 today). I'm a real heat hater and yesterday was lovely, just right IMO,but I'm finding today a touch on the warm side. I'd rather be a little bit chilly than too hot. It's easier to warm up than cool down! Autumn is my favourite season,so I am really looking forward to the beginning of September when hopefully I will start to notice a distinct chill in the air. It will be nice to need my duvet over me again in bed!

I haven't noticed quite as many as last year. I bought peppermint oil from Holland and Barratt and made it up myself. I think I added washing up liquid as well as the oil and water

Yes, in the Celtic calendar August is the start of Autumn and February is the start of Spring.

My buddleia is almost finished flowering and it's usually only just started. Same with thistles, last year they weren't even out until end of August, this year they've almost all gone to seed already. Probably the hot, dry weather earlier on has pushed everything on.

I remember the day I first noticed I could "feel" it was Autumn, it was 18 September 1987, I took a mental note but unfortunately have not done so in subsequent years. It's definitely coming earlier, I'll try to make a note of when I notice it this year.

I got married that day! It was raining when I got up but by 12 it was sunny and warm. Probably too sunny to take good photographs.

BejewelledCat · 30/07/2025 18:41

Not dreading it, I love winter. Can't wait for the dark evenings, wearing boots and hiding in my house at the weekends instead of having to be sociable and go out.

Nestingbirds · 30/07/2025 19:24

It isn’t the temperature as such that tells me autumn is approaching. It’s the tinges of orange and yellow in the trees. Plump blackberries and pears. The chill in the air. The changes to the light. The lavender has ended and the roses are looking a little bit sad. The farmers have been busy for weeks. We live in the country and autumn is definitely coming early here.

I'm sure you could manage to be unsociable in the summer if you put your mind to it.
