And dreading it….!!! Just tonight I notice it’s a lot darker and cooler and just a nip in the air. I know I know we could still get another heatwave and it’s been a stunning summer but I hate the feeling of summer ending it’s such an optimistic time spring into summer I’ve loved it esp this year with all the sunshine - even though I moaned about the heat the odd time!!!!

I can see my neighbours’ ginkgo biloba tree is showing the first signs of autumn. But I’m hoping we have many weeks of good weather still to come.

romany4 · 30/07/2025 09:20

Can't wait for Autumn!

The heat has been horrendous for me. It triggers migraines and I haven't slept properly for months.
I'm too hot and it's too light! And the noise of Summer really stresses me.
I'm going through menopause right now and am craving darkness and peace

rasputinsghost · 30/07/2025 09:55

The heatwaves and drought have sort of 'tricked' nature into a late summer response, in my opinion. The fruits are on the bushes and trees (although still immature), the leaves are turning brown (as trees and plants preserve their energy and water to make sure they reproduce) and even the wasps are early.

The nights start drawing in after the Sumer Solstice (20 June this year), and shops don't help by having 'Back to School' sales before the poor kids have broken up!

I do not mind the change in seasons, but I feel the seasons themselves are changing. They are become less distinct from each other, there are more extremes in the weather and, perhaps, the natural world is a little confused.

Lincslady53 · 30/07/2025 10:06

We have a row of hostas by a water feature. In the winter, they have died back, and start to shoot in early spring. The flowers bloom in June, and by the end of July the flowers have died and need removing. We usually have our main holiday in June, before the schools break up. I always have a tinge of sadness that summer is nearing it's end. We have had our summer hol, and we are now into dead heading, tidying up and the slope down into autumn.

IsawwhatIsaw · 30/07/2025 10:11

It’s still 26 degrees here, but nights definitely drawing in, plants in garden already going over.
we’ve had weeks of sweltering 30 plus degree heat, I’m looking forward to September and autumn.

BestIsWest · 30/07/2025 10:20

The Welsh for July is Gorffenaf - literally translates to the finish of summer. I think Cornish is similar.

Rallentanda · 30/07/2025 10:24

Yes! There is a difference in the light. I love it - feels like a childhood memory in a film.

cardibach · 30/07/2025 10:27

cofffeeee · 29/07/2025 23:46

I said the same thing to my sister to day that the nights are coming in unless its just me seeing it.
But i love it i love winter time.

Of course the nights are coming in. We’re past the longest day. They are drawing in exactly to the same schedule they always have. Why so many people are commenting on it as though it’s something unusual meaning an early autumn I can’t work out…

8misskitty8 · 30/07/2025 10:31

Still sweating where I am in Scotland. Especially at night, so muggy.

harriethoyle · 30/07/2025 10:43

I can't believe how early the blackberries are ripening this year - I ate a handful last week and planning a picking session this weekend, for the freezer. I've never known them be ready in July!

Yes, in the Celtic calendar August is the start of Autumn and February is the start of Spring.

My buddleia is almost finished flowering and it's usually only just started. Same with thistles, last year they weren't even out until end of August, this year they've almost all gone to seed already. Probably the hot, dry weather earlier on has pushed everything on.

I remember the day I first noticed I could "feel" it was Autumn, it was 18 September 1987, I took a mental note but unfortunately have not done so in subsequent years. It's definitely coming earlier, I'll try to make a note of when I notice it this year.

EdithStourton · 30/07/2025 10:51

OH GO AWAY!
It's STILL SUMMER!

Petitchat · 30/07/2025 10:53

Yes. My washing got darked on earlier than it should have...😉

Crikeyalmighty · 30/07/2025 10:54

@rasputinsghost it was one thing we liked when we lived in Copenhagen and our friends in Sweden said similar - seasons still felt more defined - more winter frost and snow, longer summer nights etc

ilovesooty · 30/07/2025 10:59

cardibach · 29/07/2025 23:05

As it always does a month on from the longest day.

Exactly
Still plenty of summer left. I think the eulogising about candles snuggling and cosy starts earlier every year though
🤑

RainSoakedNights · 30/07/2025 11:00

It feels autumnal, but also muggy today. Not sure how. There was a bite in the air this morning, but now it’s just close and cloudy.

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 30/07/2025 11:01

Crikeyalmighty · 29/07/2025 22:30

Whilst it may sound unreasonable I had to put heating on for an hour tonight -to take the chill off the air - it’s rained most of day here and this house is Victorian which has stone walls always feels cool with a nip if it rains- lovely and cool on a hot day - not so much when it isn’t .

Where do you live? Don't feel like that in Yorkshire just yet.

StripyShirt · 30/07/2025 11:05

Yes, the air started to feel different last week, although earlier than expected.

Will be very glad to see the end of summer and this awful heat.

BridgetRandomfuck · 30/07/2025 11:16

I think it's just because it's a bit grey and so the nights getting a bit shorter is more noticeable. We are a month past the solstice. Fear not, summer lovers - the forecast for the coming two weeks is bright sunshine and 26/27c (in London at least). Summer ain't over yet!

Blackberries out and conkers forming, leaves starting to yellow around here

I've noticed the blackberries and conkers just the last few days, some of our blackberries are ripe which seems much earlier than previous years. I love autumn as a season but could do with it coming in a few weeks! Holding out for some warmer weather still too

Bryonyberries · 30/07/2025 11:20

The sunset is currently getting earlier by over 3mins per day and increasing gradually until it’ll be about 4mins a day end of Sept/beginning of October. It will feel like it is starting to draw in quick now as it is getting quicker each day. I’m going to enjoy the remaining lighter evenings as all too soon it’ll be dark before I leave work.

According to Woodlamd Trust the expected ripening range for blackberries is mid July to September. I checked because everybody going ‘ooo it seems early’ didn’t feel right based on my own experiences in previous years. https://naturescalendar.woodlandtrust.org.uk/blog/2025/it-s-bramble-season-let-us-know-when-you-spot-your-first-ripe-berry/

Yes, I felt the change in the air and almost the “autumn smell” when I was on a dog walk a few days ago.

blobby10 · 30/07/2025 11:34

Its definitely a weird weather year for crops - Blackberries are out a full month earlier this year than last and its a very good year for them! I always thought of blackberries as an autumn berry which went with the cooking apples that fell from my Grandma's tree in late August but not anymore. After the recent rain, the grass is growing like nothing on earth - hopefully the farmers will still get a second silage cut to make up for the 50% drop in yield on their first one and the hay crop this year. The wheat/barley/oats look to be ripe early too - some fields around us have already been combined (E Midlands).
I'm going camping the last week of August (before the BH) so hoping for warm days and evenings although I expect there to be an autumn chill in the air come nightfall.

I saw the start of old man's beard today.

Definitely noticed the darker nights already, it is still warm thankfully.

If I ruled the world we would live in perpetual June.

Definitely. We love light nights and warmth. DS is regularly at the park until 9 and it is so good for him not to be stuck indoors from 4 like he is in winter. The nights are noticeably drawing in now and I find it accelerates in August.
