Ontobetterthings · 27/07/2025 18:03

I was listening to talk radio and there was a very angry man on ranting away about womens football. He was basically saying put it on a different channel. Noone wants to watch, even his wife agrees. He was out of breath he was that mad. I was quite taken aback. Far enough if you dont like it, dont watch. Why on earth he was this upset I dont know! Whats with this disgusting reaction! How weird!!

Compared to any pub Sunday league team

🥱

They really are

But you said you wouldn’t watch it? So how would you know?

Compared to any pub Sunday league team

Nonsense. In terms of fitness, positioning, ball control, tactical understanding, discipline and mentality, these professional athletes would run rings around a pub team.

A men's pub team could kick the ball harder, jostle and tackle harder. They'd be bigger and stronger. That's it.

Compared to any pub Sunday league team

There are an awful lot of very unfit men in Sunday league pub teams with an over-inflated idea of their footballing abilities.

Honestly, every time I read this tired old trope it makes me laugh. Bet they all claim to have had trials for their local professional team too.

I spent many years working in pro football (men’s, but developing women’s/girls’) and the one thing more boring than men who trot out this nonsense, is the women who bloody believe it.

Pearl69 · 27/07/2025 19:26

There have been some appalling comments made about women’s football today. Sadly I’m not surprised but the vitriol is so OTT. We still have a long way to go ….

MuckFusk · 27/07/2025 19:26

Sounds like he's President of the He-Man Woman Hater's Club.

Agree 100% I don’t know any either. It’s essentially a different sport, any Sunday league men’s team would beat the England women’s team comfortably.

Sunday league? Probably 15 year old males could. Because Males vs Females in sport is inherently not equal. It’s why Men have Men’s sport categories and Women have Women’s sport categories. You Pilchard.

Quashsquash · 27/07/2025 19:29

As someone who only watches either, or both, during championships, yes it is a very different game. And if you are smart and patient enough to take that difference in, then you can enjoy both.

oh, yeah, and also not be an asshole

I know right? I absolutely have zero interest in football but this nasty sneering at the women’s side really is depressing.

TheCurious0range · 27/07/2025 19:29

There is definitely misogyny at play, but equally I see so many ranty threads on here when the men's football is on and a regular TV programme has been moved or cancelled, football, rugby, Olympics even, the same arguments it doesn't need to be on Bbc1/ITV , why is it on both channels, who cares if it's a final etc etc.

I enjoy most sports but I don't get angry when one I don't enjoy changes the TV schedule. Lots of people seem to.

RantzNotBantz · 27/07/2025 19:30

He might like to consider that a good way to prevent something being shoved down your throat is to shut your mouth!

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/07/2025 19:30

Funnily enough, my dh has never really been interested in football,,more of a rugger bugger type, but as I type he’s glued to the women’s Euros final!

FellowPatient · 27/07/2025 19:32

It's nothing to do with women's football as a sport, most I should hope would celebrate it and support how far England have come in this tournament.

However, if we're talking about general standard of football objectively, pretty average teenage boys would destroy either of these teams and the scoreline would be embarrassing.

"I may not agree with you, but I will defend to the death your right to say it"

To generate discussion maybe..........

The fact it’s actually a discussion at all, though?

Ponoka7 · 27/07/2025 19:35

Lanzarotelady · 27/07/2025 18:36

I don't know of any man who would choose to watch it, my husband and not one of his mates or his colleagues, would. Appreciate that they don't represent the whole of the males in the country etc.

Personally, would I watch it, no, I think its dire.

That's what I've found. It's on in the pubs and they'll sit there looking at the screen the way they will when cycling is on. Except the comments are insulting. I've stopped going to the pub when it's on. When I've been the only woman in the betting shop, some dickhead has to make a comment. It is for my benefit because sometimes a match is over half way through yet they've only just noticed that women "are shite at football". Gabby Logan commentary on anything, always shows that the 'nice men' are never as nice as they appear.

Velmy · 27/07/2025 19:35

Vallmo47 · 27/07/2025 18:22

When men say men’s football is better, when was the last time the men actually got us as far as the women have repeatedly done? Genuine question.

It's irrelevant. The men are playing against the best, elite athletes in the world. The women's world champions not so long ago got absolutely routed by a team of schoolchildren.

The level of play is awful and the games are often embarrassingly shit to watch. It won't change for years while it's losing so much money. I don't know why people have such a hard time admitting that.

Lanzarotelady · 27/07/2025 19:36

MandyMotherOfBrian · 27/07/2025 19:24

But you said you wouldn’t watch it? So how would you know?

From what I have seen, before it is turned off!

AutumnLeaves95 · 27/07/2025 19:36

Was this on LBC? If so, he was a right knob

Solocup · 27/07/2025 19:37

Steph117 · 27/07/2025 19:21

Ridiculous comments like this are what cause much of the problem. Pretending it is something it isn’t.

It’s not ridiculous at all. The men’s they fucked around with the ball wasting time, the women’s was constant every minute counts attacking. It’s a different game, in my opinion, a much better one.

PithyTaupeWriter · 27/07/2025 19:37

Lots of angry men angry that women are getting some attention.
I don’t like lots of things but I’m not ringing up radio stations saying that the tele should only show what I want to watch.
What a pathetic excuse for a human that ‘man’ is!

Ellmau · 27/07/2025 19:38

Well, I don't want to watch it either, because it's football which is intrinsically boring. But I had managed to remain in blissful ignorance it was on.

On enquiry, my Dad is watching and says it's very exciting.

Lanzarotelady · 27/07/2025 19:36

Maybe don’t switch off then, you might learn something before you comment. Lest you look like a dick.

I’m guessing Talk Radio man wasn’t pissed off because Antiques Roadshow got pushed back a bit .

Greendress22 · 27/07/2025 19:40

I heard a clip from that earlier, he was talking utter nonsense! He just has issues with women rather than just women playing football. I just hoped he doesn’t have a daughter or a granddaughter with that sort of attitude!

My husband is currently glued to the football and I know my Dad is watching as well.
