Ontobetterthings · 27/07/2025 18:03

I was listening to talk radio and there was a very angry man on ranting away about womens football. He was basically saying put it on a different channel. Noone wants to watch, even his wife agrees. He was out of breath he was that mad. I was quite taken aback. Far enough if you dont like it, dont watch. Why on earth he was this upset I dont know! Whats with this disgusting reaction! How weird!!

I don't know of any man who would choose to watch it, my husband and not one of his mates or his colleagues, would. Appreciate that they don't represent the whole of the males in the country etc.

Personally, would I watch it, no, I think its dire.

My DH watched it with loads of enthusiasm (but he’s a football nut who takes pleasure in all aspects of the game, playing and watching different leagues). If people don’t want to watch it just watch something else, plenty of other channels,

Im really pleased that the women’s team got the coverage and had their win. What a great boost for young women playing sport.

My husband and son both watched it, they’ve watched the whole tournament and loved it, and they were definitely both males last time I looked. They’re not misogynists though, maybe check for signs of that in your husband, his mates and his colleagues. Oh and yourself while you’re at it.

Indeed.
My husband, son and our male friends all watched it. In fact, our local pub was packed out with people there specifically to watch the game.

JohnTheRevelator · 27/07/2025 23:30

I think this man was the one I referred to on the other thread about women's football (AIBU to say that men who believe this are sexist pricks?).

Cherrytree86 · 27/07/2025 23:32

Sooooooo much misogyny and internalised misogyny!!!

feel sorry for those people - pathetic.

go Lionesses!!

rainbowsparkle28 · 27/07/2025 23:33

NotEnoughKnittingTime · 27/07/2025 18:22

Not when it suggests he thinks they should be in the kitchen.

Absolutely. Not when it comes from a place of misogyny and sexism, no thank you, it has no place in today’s world.

spoonbillstretford · 27/07/2025 23:34

Don't listen to talk radio.

And lots of men hate women, I hope that's not a newsflash for you.

Outside9 · 27/07/2025 23:04

That said, the penalties were pretty terrible lol

But the saves were epic!!

I honestly think that the way the game went, Spain worked harder and played better than we did. But the England saves were truly great.

@Lanzarotelady

you are surrounded by misogynists and you have internalised misogyny. Women are not inferior to men.
HTH.

Flomingho · 27/07/2025 23:36

What a misogynistic git. My own DH was as impressed as I was with the lionesses. He whole heartedly agreed when I mentioned that the men's England team would have given up when they were one goal down but the women's team always persevere until the end.

LadyBracknellsHandbagg · 27/07/2025 23:37

Whippetlovely · 27/07/2025 22:59

Your delusional. If the men missed that many penalties they would be hung drawn and quartered. It's great women's games are getting more tv and they will be getting paid more but to say they are better is a joke. Probably about a 15 year old league 1 level if that. Men and women shouldn't be compared because men will always be better. My dd does athletics she wouldn't beat a boy at the same level but it doesn't take away her talents as a female against other females. We need to stop comparing apples and pears.

‘You’re’ delusional. The men have an abysmal penalty shoot out record and have never won one at any World Cup.

Whereas the women ‘England have now won all three shootouts under Sarina Wiegman - against Sweden, Nigeria at the 2023 World Cup, and Brazil at the Finalissima at Wembley. They have also reached at least the semi-finals of every World Cup and Euros since 2015, made the final of the World Cup in 2023 and have just won back to back Euros titles. The England men’s team have won nothing for 59 long years.

But hey, don’t let facts get in the way.

My DH is watching the football now. There’s odd comments about how they’re not as good as the men’s, but he’s still supporting them to win!

Stats are stacked against him on that one

Yelloello · 27/07/2025 23:38

PyongyangKipperbang · 27/07/2025 20:58

Well every day is a school day! I didnt know that about the gate receipts.

To me the shutting down of the game back then really encapsulates everything we as women have had to deal with since day dot.

We get good at something, men dont like it so they shut us down. But the womens footie was so blatant and "fuck you, we are more important" that is the perfect example.

Yes it’s very interesting. There’s speculation about all the various reasons they shut it down, and I don’t know if this has been mentioned but another potential contributing factor was some of the funds raised were allegedly going towards mining communities, so basically supporting the mining strikes.

Mayve · 27/07/2025 23:39

They should make the pitches and goals a bit smaller and then it would be as dynamic and exciting to watch as the men’s. Smaller, slightly slower women on the same size pitch as the mens game can make the game a bit laggy.

GinAndJuice99 · 27/07/2025 23:43

Rantypanties · 27/07/2025 18:22

I’m fed up of hearing men bitching on that it’s not proper football or whatever. Are they telling their daughters that? Men’s England team are dire, always have been in my living memory but we still watch them to cheer them on. Why is women’s football different?

The men's team are not dire at all, in fact they've reached two Euros finals in a row. That puts them in the top ten of all countries in a football mad world. They're just not quite as good as we'd like them to be, that's all.

Anyway well done to the brilliant Lionesses!

Nah for my money its just that they didnt like us being more popular than them (especially to other men) and just scratted around to find reasons to justify it.

Lancasterel · 27/07/2025 23:48

I think these angry men are mainly just jealous!

Yes that is definitely one of the main reasons as I’d mentioned initially upthread, but I was just raising other viewpoints and possible contributing reasons that sports historians have banded about . ETA: No-one feels the mining support was the main reason though of course -it’s more seen as just a potential additional thing they held against the women’s game and served to further ruffle feathers.

I do appreciate everyone has their own take on history though - it’s all so interesting! 😄

Problem is if we do this you'd constantly have comments saying how the womens team can't hack it like men's can and justifying why they're paid so much less, like how womens Wimbledon is.

HiRen · 27/07/2025 23:55

I think some men use 'watching the football' as a male-bonding exercise, rather than for the sport, hence why they get so upset at women encroaching on their space. These men tend to have tiny penises, enormous egos, and problems with foreigners and MILs ime.

Negroany · 28/07/2025 00:35

YourUglySister · 27/07/2025 18:34

I’m interested to find out if the women roll around on the floor and feign injury as much as the men do or if they just get on with it. Grin

No, my partner and I watched it (he barely ever mentions that it's "women's" football) and he said "they don't seem to go down as much as the men" and I said "I dunno, some men never go down".

But, anyway, there is definitely less of that nonsense and of the weird stalling some men's teams seem to do. The just play and it can be a bit more technical too.

Dery · 28/07/2025 00:44

DH is a huge football fan. He thinks there’s a great deal of skill in the women’s game. He has said in the past that he thinks Sam Kerr is Chelsea’s best player out of both the women’s and men’s teams. I’ve seen very committed male attendance at women’s football games. This guy was just a dinosaur and should be ashamed of himself.

Hahahahaha

I would have more respect, if people were honest and actually could call out the issues, instead of this rhetoric that it is such a superior game.

Listen to any commentator of rugby, football, etc, they will openly call out the male players for a poor tackle, goal attempt, poor pass etc - will they do that in the womans game no, because we are being forced to believe it is a far more superior game than it actually is, anyone having the balls to say this in cancelled!

Agree. It's patronising to the audience and players. Like those penalties v Sweden. They were awful. The commentators dare not criticise though.

Right? My stepmum is the same. I don’t get it - they were both absolute flipping female powerhouses, crashing glass ceilings when they were younger but have always had this ‘that’s a man’s thing’ about some sports and trades. Totally oblivious to the strangeness of the dichotomy!

Well I’m 67 and all my contemporaries were cheering on the England team, giving a more football-informed commentary than I could, and elated by the fact that our winning national team are women.

I can see hundreds of friends of friends the same all over my Facebook.

So you three won’t need to turn your individual examples into any kind of ageist generalisation.

‘Women of a certain age’ FFS.
