Angry men about womens football

Ontobetterthings · 27/07/2025 18:03

I was listening to talk radio and there was a very angry man on ranting away about womens football. He was basically saying put it on a different channel. Noone wants to watch, even his wife agrees. He was out of breath he was that mad. I was quite taken aback. Far enough if you dont like it, dont watch. Why on earth he was this upset I dont know! Whats with this disgusting reaction! How weird!!

Oh cool. Fair enough. I used to watch the England men the 80s/90s when I thought they might be in with a chance. But they weren’t, they were shit and didn’t win then and haven’t since. I mean it’s almost the same as the women not winning isn’t it? Isn’t it?

And sorry to quote myself, but I do so love Mumsnet, when women come on and comment, on anything whatsoever, with ‘Well my DH says…..’, presumably posted with a straight face.

As a man. I love it.

The Lionesses are fantastic, an absolute credit to themselves and our country. I love watching the women's game as it lacks so much of the bullsh*t found in the men's game. There's a joyful purity to it.

Fingers crossed for us in extra time!

I agree!

The non stop professional fouls in the men’s game make it so frustrating. And it’s so cynical.

2021x · 27/07/2025 21:15

Would you agreethat people who use this talking point as a reason to not value/watch/support the England Womens Team would be unreasonable?

Edited

I think it’s reasonable to say that they like the physicality of elite men’s football better than elite women’s, but I expect that view is built on underlying sexism.

It’s just like when women moan about Mens football being on the main channels. You see it on here all the time

I disagree. So many men are ridiculous babies about men's football. It's not the same at all.

elfies · 27/07/2025 21:21

Our male footballers would do better without the amateur dramatics !
If our ladies declared their gender as male , and played against the men , I think they'd stand a blooming good chance .

I mean, this is a ludicrous opinion to hold.

I don't know of any man who would choose to watch it, my husband and not one of his mates or his colleagues, would. Appreciate that they don't represent the whole of the males in the country etc.

Personally, would I watch it, no, I think its dire.

My husband and I have watched all the games, and have really enjoyed the tournament. He missed the final though as he was visiting his sister who didn't want to watch the game. He's gutted he missed it, and so now he's watching it on catch up.

mondaytosunday · 27/07/2025 21:31

My son (21) has followed the women’s and thinks they are great! It’s not the same game as the men’s but they aren’t men! 🏆🏆

Well there is normally a lot less as the men don’t do as well as the women 😂!

sciaticafanatica · 27/07/2025 21:32

@elfiesyou can’t actually believe that
its just a ridiculous statement

ChocolateCinderToffee · 27/07/2025 21:33

I've been checking comments on SM and my whole timeline is glued to the Lionesses and no they aren't all women. The guys are watching too. So I think it's just a minority of Angry Insecure Men who have a problem with it. It's their problem, of course.

Cinaferna · 27/07/2025 21:34

My husband adores it. Started off watching it in a sort of solidarity with the ladeez (condescending?) attitude but now he is so engaged, I can't tell whether it's men's or women's footie that he's watching. I have zero interest, and he loves football, so to have twice as many matches to watch makes him very happy.

TheHateIsNotGood · 27/07/2025 21:37

@NotEnoughKnittingTime I stand corrected - I'm a half-breed Anglo-Scot myself so just call England the UK, but the English in me is still dead pleased.

Yeah no sorry thats just not true. My son when he played top level grassoots (who plays category 1 academy football) has played the very best women’s academies (think Chelsea, Arsenal etc) and the women were two years up. The boys creamed them. The women were fantastic athletes, technically capable and amazing footballers but it was the speed and physicality. No contest.

I love football both men’s and women’s and will watch both but no the women wouldnt have any chance. But that doesn’t make what the women do any less amazing. They are elite athletes and play like it. Well done to the Lionesses.

LemonMum21 · 27/07/2025 21:39

If he was such a huge fan of football you'd think he'd absolutely revel in there being more football to watch. I get that it's different and potentially not as good but why is it so deep that you have to pay to call in to the radio to rant about it until you're blue in the face?

It's giving entitled man isn't getting his own way and can't watch what he wants on the telly.

I don't keep up with any football anymore but I've been watching Welcome to Wrexham and I actually think the women are so inspiring and that's just one team. These women have so much raw talent and are so dedicated, they work a full time job and still find time to train on weekends and go to matches, I really do take my hat off to them.

FellowPatient · 27/07/2025 19:45

A penalty should essentially be a guaranteed goal, unless you mess it up.

The standard of the penalties are shocking.

The England men’s team record on penalties…do remind us …

Trumpthecant · 27/07/2025 18:09

Dunno, cause he’s a prick? My husband was cheering the ladies on.

So was my two year old son :-)

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 27/07/2025 21:42

I think they are jealous that the lionesses always win and they don't want us women to experience happiness that they haven't?!

Hotflushesandchilblains · 27/07/2025 21:42

I was planning on leaving so my dad could watch it, but ended watching the whole match with him. He says the womens game a breath of fresh air, less what he calls silliness than the mens game and loves the attitudes and approach. Not necessarily better football, different but really good.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 27/07/2025 21:42

CaptainMyCaptain · 27/07/2025 18:24

My husband is at the pub watching with his mates. They've been watching it all the long and barely even mention its women playing now.

Good men

alphabetti · 27/07/2025 21:43

It’s misogyny! They believe men’s football is superior and women’s game should not deserve recognition. Men and women’s bodies are different so their games will be slightly different however the lionesses are amazing and many have started their football journeys having to compete within boys teams, having their games pushed aside for boys matches, having to defend their choice of sport as it’s not been seen as girly…..

They’ve lifted the trophy today and it’s shameful that many men who would have been celebrating the same success of the men’s team are silent. Things have came a huge way forwards but still need to advance.

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 27/07/2025 21:45

Whatshesaid96 · 27/07/2025 18:41

Yet men are happy to go to none league football games and cheer them on. The level of that is much worse than women's international football. But yeh because its men innit they are better.....

I just eye roll and happily tell them to leave me to watch it alone.

Good point I'll remember this one if needed!
I wish I'd seen women's football in tv growing up it might have made me sportier child

They really, genuinely wouldn't. Even if they played a lower league men's team they would be thrashed, let alone the England team.
It's OK to admit that women aren't as fast or strong as men, that it isn't a failing on their part.

localnotail · 27/07/2025 21:48

This is so weird? A lot of people I know are watching it the same way they watch man's football. I'm not into football so I did not know until this eve that its a female team.

Guys who have an issue with this give off a "small dick energy".

StrawberrySquash · 27/07/2025 21:49

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 27/07/2025 18:23

I saw a clip of that - he was just a dickhead I think!

The whole thing about “give them their own channel” - why does he think bbc and itv are more men’s than women’s channels??

Presumably his channel is GB News

Sortin · 27/07/2025 21:49

I'm not really interested in sport of any kind but it seems to me that the women's version of most sports is different. Not better or worse just different. Tennis for example is a different game when women play. Ice hockey is the only sport I watch much of and again totally different games. I actually prefer the women's hockey as it's less aggressive ( though still rough).

I naively had no idea some men resented womens sport so much.
