Ontobetterthings · 27/07/2025 18:03

I was listening to talk radio and there was a very angry man on ranting away about womens football. He was basically saying put it on a different channel. Noone wants to watch, even his wife agrees. He was out of breath he was that mad. I was quite taken aback. Far enough if you dont like it, dont watch. Why on earth he was this upset I dont know! Whats with this disgusting reaction! How weird!!

I do. I’m 60. I’ve always thought it was shit. But I understood when there wasn’t an alternative. Now there is. Red button/iplayer. No need to disrupt everyone else.

Genuine question - why would you not watch something on demand?

I don't know of any man who would choose to watch it, my husband and not one of his mates or his colleagues, would. Appreciate that they don't represent the whole of the males in the country etc.

Personally, would I watch it, no, I think its dire.

My husband and son were both in the lounge set up with pizza and drinks and cheering them on while I wasn’t really that interested. They were genuinely over the moon when they won.

Obviously. But it’s very hard for you sport heads to justify it now, isn’t it? You resort to insults instead.

Edited

Sorry? What insults? And what's hard to justify? Live sports events are often the biggest TV events of the year.

EasternStandard · 27/07/2025 20:51

MasterBeth · 27/07/2025 20:46

Unfortunately for you, your view on what is and isn't boring isn't the rule by which TV is scheduled.

The demand is there for some major tournaments and matches. It gets watched and has sponsorship/ ads

Come on now. 180 odd channels and unlimited streaming options. Why the hell should she have to press the button on a remote control. 😁

I’ll be honest and say I find women’s football slow and boring and difficult to watch. That said I wish they’d put men’s and women’s football on itv/bbc 3,4 and whatever other channels they have because there’s never a lot on those channels and it doesn’t make sense to interrupt the main channels and not utilise the other ones.

"Interrupt the main channels", like it's 1992.

Yet again women show men how it's done....Penalty Shoot out? Done, won and that mythical curse is broken. And it doesn't make women the 'master' sex nor do we want to 'wield' power over men and subjugate them...after all two wrongs don't make a right as the old saying goes.

Marvellous result for UK women and I'm not a football 'fan' but played a bit of goal for Sunday men's 'scratch' teams in the 80s and did well but if my boyfriend at the time didn't also play then I'd be determined as 'gay' as I often was anyway. For really stupid reasons like riding a motorcycle and not taking shit.

Finally found some like-minded ladies in the 90s who liked to play rugby and turns out us women are pretty good at that too.

I feel a bit sorry for most men nowadays, only a few try and subjugate women now - but we women shouldn't try and get them back for all the harm they have done us and be the better people that helps to create a truly equal society.

England women not UK women.

MelliC · 27/07/2025 20:52

I used to be a season ticket holder for a premiership team. But I got sick of it all being about money all of the time So many matches, many of them pointless..So much money. Officials who were supposed to be imparial not being so.

For me, Women's football is just much more closer to "real" football. Like Men's football was before it went bad.

People who complain about the speed of the game or the missing of penalties etc should maybe consider that they are playing on a pitch optimised for men. The goals and the pitch should be made proportionally smaller to fit the relative strength, reach of the average sporting female.

Also the thing about radio phone-ins is that you have be a moron to call in. Probably no one in real life will listen to him.

You could hear my husband from downstairs whilst I tried to hide upstairs during the penalties 😂

insult might be strong but you were very dismissive and supercilious.
If they are big events, they’ll still be big on a different platform, surely? Bonus. Instead of doing away with everyone else’s likes.

"Interrupt the main channels", like it's 1992.

Exactly it’s not 1992, we have a vast array of channels now so it doesn’t need to be shown on the main channels. I totally understand it in the past when we had 4 channels to choose from but broadcasters have more options now because it’s not 1992.

So why don't you choose one of those other thousands of options then?

And I read that the women were giving the (much larger) gate receipts to charity

So the men shut the game down.

Well every day is a school day! I didnt know that about the gate receipts.

To me the shutting down of the game back then really encapsulates everything we as women have had to deal with since day dot.

We get good at something, men dont like it so they shut us down. But the womens footie was so blatant and "fuck you, we are more important" that is the perfect example.

FellowPatient · 27/07/2025 20:24

Very well thanks, but I'm being honest when I say the quality of football on both sides was shit.

I'd say the same about the finals of the men's Europa League and Europa Conference League finals this year.

sciaticafanatica · 27/07/2025 20:59

I’m going to be honest and say I just find the women’s game lacklustre and slow.
but I also don’t enjoy men’s football either.

SaintNoMountainHighEnough · 27/07/2025 20:59

That was brilliant.

Signed, very far from angry man.

Rewis · 27/07/2025 21:00

Men just have when women get positive attention.

You don't seem to understand the finances or scheduling needs of television. Broadcasters have slots to fill and budgets to hit. They don't have infinite slots and infinite budgets. They are not going to put hugely popular programmes like the finals of live international football tournaments on minor channels just because you want to watch Pointless or Antiques Roadshow like you always do.

But they are not the same tactics as the men's game. They are optimised for the physical characteristics of the players.

OK but they are still tactics used in football, they aren't playing it with their hands are they?

Its a weasly excuse to justify their not so well hidden misogyny. As another poster said, we wouldn't say that Paula Radcliff didn't win the marathon would we- but I am sure she trained for it differently from the men.

JudgeJ · 27/07/2025 21:01

DrCoconut · 27/07/2025 20:36

I can't stand football (or sport) of any kind so at least I'm consistent 😆 It is good that women's sports are being covered more though.

I assume that this sexism is OK on MN, only women's sport should be covered.

The women's Euros Final is likely to be the biggest rated programme of the week so it makes every sense to put it on ITV1 and BBC1.

Fair enough. But if he never watches it how does he know the ‘quality’ isn’t there?

He has watched games in the past, and as a result no longer watches games.

Well, that's rules, not tactics.
