Each summer, we take turns to plan our own "Come Dine With Me"
This years theme is countries, and I have Britain 🇬🇧

What would you make for a British starter, main and dessert? I'm in desperate need of inspiration!

Also while you are here - what would your 'Death Row' meal be? 😋

There is no British cuisine. There's Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and various regional dishes from England.

Well in that case that's no 'Indian' cuisine as there are huge differences between the different regions of India.

Your interpretation of British can be whatever you want it to be.

No need to get so semantic about a light hearted post about cooking a British dish.

Maybe just say what dish you would cook?

Jc2001 · 27/07/2025 16:53

..oh. And Northern Ireland isn't part of Britain. It's part of the UK.

Which lumped altogether is British cuisine

OP, you've had some suggestions already, but I would focus on traditional dishes that we really dont see anymore or only in certain regions now

So stotties, bara brith, cheese and fruit cake, cullen skink, potted shrimp, lobscouse, panhaggity, turf cakes, eccles cakes, lardy cake, rarebit, kippers, hull patty, pie and mash

the list is endless

marshmallowfinder · 27/07/2025 17:03

Mini Welsh rarebit or seafood such as mussels for starter
Lancashire hotpot with seasonal veg
Blackberry and apple crumble with custard or clotted cream.

I've just come back from picking blackberries. They're in season right now!

CalliopePlantain · 27/07/2025 17:03

glass of orange juice to start.
Toad in the hole for main.
trifle for pudding.

my DRM is tartiflette with Ben and jerrys cherry Garcia after

How about a salmon wellington? Use the hairy bikers salmon in pastry recipe on bbc website, it’s really tasty, made it last week. Not difficult but you need to be organised and I tweaked it too to suit ingredients that needed eating up.

another thought was pork and leeks in cider and cream with mash with black pudding running through to honour where you are

soupyspoon · 27/07/2025 17:22

Black pudding yes, scotch egg made with black pudding too
Haggis as others have said
Suet puddings, sweet or savoury
Steak and kidney
Woolton pie (not sure of the spelling)

Prawn cocktail, beef roast and a crumble. Not summery but very British.

This but with a cheese board as well.

Pork and leeks in cider and cream sounds so good!

I think im gonna go for -

Potted shrimps with b&b
Beef Wellington
Strawberries and cream/banana and custard depending on preference!

Please feel free to keep 'em coming, I love reading through all your ideas ❤️

Go for a proper pudding. Jam Roly poly or spotted dick. Our puddings are great.

AuntieDen · 27/07/2025 17:46

if it's summer I'd go

pea soup *there's a nice bit not very 'British' recipe with tamarind, but given you're clearly ok with meat perhaps pea and ham?

beef wellington - its easy just give yourself enough time to assemble well ahead, and use a meat thermometer - no need to do indiividual ones the ends are always more cooked than the centre

lemon posset is incredibly easy and very old fashioned British.
or a fruity souffle, chilled or warm version
or sussex pond pudding (but more wintery)
or any number of combinations of meringue, cream and fruit or steamed pud type things

and a cheeseboard because there are some amazing British cheeses

soupyspoon · 27/07/2025 17:48

Elderflower jelly, a massive mold of it wibbling on the centre of the table, all glossy and see through with bits of elderflower in it.

Couldnt get more British

soupyspoon · 27/07/2025 17:48

Or is it mould?

soupyspoon · 27/07/2025 17:49

This is like food porn this thread.

Nopenott0day · 27/07/2025 18:07

Death row meal: all you can eat buffet

Come dine with me:
S: staffs oatcakes ( not very fine dining I know!)
M: roast beef & trimmings
D: cheese board with regional cheeses

EdithStourton · 27/07/2025 18:15

Asparagus soup.
Lamb chops grilled with rosemary and served with salad and new potatoes.
Summer pudding or lemon syllabub.

I

Papyrophile · 27/07/2025 18:30

For my final meal, I would like smoked salmon (not from a supermarket). To follow, I would like scallops as the fish course and then a tiny perfectly cooked piece of fillet steak. And a glorious green salad with nice bread throughout. For me, that would be perfection on the plate. I would not want a dessert.

Haha. I remember at work entertaining some American colleagues down the local pub, who were on a visit and saw Spotted Dick on the menu. They thought the name was hilarious and all felt they needed to try it. They loved it. It never struck me as a funny name for a pudding before that as I'd grown up with it. For them, being in a British pub was a great experience for them, let alone trying a funny sounding pudding.

You don't see it so much now unfortunately.

pinkglitter12 · 27/07/2025 19:19

Spotted dick

Papyrophile · 27/07/2025 20:27

I really haven't ever eaten a pudding or a dessert that tasted better than cheese.

AbzMoz · 27/07/2025 21:06

Watch the Great British Menu for inspo!

I’d play into seasonality and I too have done a Lancashire themed menu in the past!

seafood starter - either popcorn shrimp style in a tempura batter or raw / buttered pots on fresh bread depending on how far you are from a stocking
black pudding scotch eggs with homemade chutneys

you could do a deconstructed hotpot with a roast lamb rack and a pot of the veg
I think a butter pie could perhaps be more summery, served with a chicory salad
One of my favourite dishes in the world is burnt sprouts with black pudding crumb, it’s an amazing side for a roast chicken with some standout roasties (the best part of a Sunday roast, arguably the most British of dishes)

fruit pudding / trifle / pavlova depending on which fruits are most in season
did an uncle Joe mintball choc brownie which went down a storm

end on a cheese and chutney plate as it’d be rude not to!

pair with British ales and wines

Ladybyrd · 27/07/2025 21:19

If you want a stereotypical British menu, I’d do scotch egg (proper, like), beef and ale pie, veg, new potatoes and gravy, followed by trifle.

Not that I’d eat any of that shit myself.

When they send me to the gallows, I’ll have a lobster (cooked at home), but expertly picked (because I can’t be arsed). Greenland prawns in their shells, 2 oysters, a salad, with beetroot, hot new potatoes and boiled eggs. Salad cream. And Morrisons The Best coleslaw.

I’d fill up on coleslaw (and wine) early on and end up leaving most of rest.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 27/07/2025 21:36

Prawn cocktail (Bloody Mary style) steak and chips. Trifle
