Each summer, we take turns to plan our own "Come Dine With Me"
This years theme is countries, and I have Britain 🇬🇧

What would you make for a British starter, main and dessert? I'm in desperate need of inspiration!

Also while you are here - what would your 'Death Row' meal be? 😋

OP posts:
vivainsomnia · 27/07/2025 14:43

Ummm dauphinoise potatoes are French, not British!

If go with:
Prawn cocktails
Beef with Yorkshire pudding
Banoffee Pie

The dessert especially!

Comedycook · 27/07/2025 14:43

Scottish smoked salmon and some sort of homemade bread

Shepherds pie but made with slow cooked lamb shoulder rather than mince

Apple crumble or Eton mess

JingsMahBucket · 27/07/2025 14:43

Bikergran · 27/07/2025 14:24

Potted shrimps served with lemon wedges and brown bread and butter.
Crown roast of lamb with Jersey Royal potatoes and asparagus.
Queen of puddings served with Jersey cream.

Death row meal
Deep fried brie wedges served with mango chutney.
Roast duck with lemon and herb stuffing, dauphinoise potatoes and green beans.
Steamed syrup sponge and custard.
Served with Bollinger champagne, followed by a decent cuppa.

@Bikergran tell me more about this “Roast duck with lemon and herb stuffing”, please!

“On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is a beef Wellington? 🤔“

Depends if you plan to add death caps.

Aintgointogoa · 27/07/2025 14:44

@comedinewithme2025 don't try the Australian 'version' 😱

Clarinet1 · 27/07/2025 14:45

I suggest:
Prawn cocktail to start (I had a really good one last week which was garnished with orange caviar!) or maybe chilled Hampshire watercress soup
Main I agree with those who say you can’t beat a good roast dinner - probably beef with Yorkshire pudding, horseradish, three veg……
Pudding - Summer Pudding with clotted cream or pouring cream.

Death row meal:
Salade Nicoise
Paella Valenciana
Lemon Sorbet.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/07/2025 14:45

Melon Boat
Chicken Madras (with chips)
Angel Delight

Snowdropsaremyfavourite · 27/07/2025 14:46

Leek and potato soup
Toad in the hole
Strawberry trifle

I love this thread ❤️

Technically Northern Ireland isn’t part of Britain just the UK so I would do as others have a starter, main and dessert with a country assigned to that course to celebrate them all or somehow incorporate something from each country in each course. The former is fun and easier though!

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/07/2025 14:52

Welsh, rather than 'British'

Cockle 'popcorn' with laverbread mayonnaise.
Roast breast of lamb with 'stwmp naw rhiw (lovely mashed vegetables)
Toasted bara brith with ice-cream

NI isn't part of Great Britain. But NI citizens are British citizens. There is Britain, Great Britain, and the British Isles - all different! We love to make life easy...

But regardless, OP, your regional menu sounds lovely. You could also try googling 'forgotten' dishes from your area and giving them a modern spin.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 27/07/2025 14:55

Ooh, death row meal...

Oysters Mignonette
Roast breast of lamb with Chinese pancakes, hoisin sauce, cucumber and spring onions
Cheese and apples

persikmeow · 27/07/2025 14:57

Tough one! For one, British food is not particularly summery… My favourite winter combo would be:

S: Pumpkin soup or smoked salmon blinis
M: Beef Wellington
D: Sticky toffee pudding

RelaxedOddish · 27/07/2025 14:59

Starter: Ham Hock with a type of chutney
Or prawn cocktail or a soup
Main: individual pies - steak and ale maybe, with mash, peas and gravy
Or toad in the hole
Or a beef stew with dumplings
Desert: Apple crumble and custard
Or sticky toffee pudding
Or Angel delight!

SomethingFun · 27/07/2025 15:01

Scottish smoked salmon mousse
Dover Sole, jersey royals, watercress sauce
Strawberries and cream for pudding

You’d have to chef it up a bit I guess but I think that would be a lovely summer British menu. Or look at past food from that ‘Great British Menu’ that used to be on.

I totally second the slow cooked lamb shoulder shepherd's pie. I had it once and it was glorious.

Starter do the local seafood because that is generally lighter.

Dessert eton mess which is also lighter.

CrepuscularCritter · 27/07/2025 15:16

A fish plate with smoked salmon, prawns, crab and some homemade breads
Beef Wellington or a chicken and tarragon pie
Homemade trifle or lemon posset

Death row meal
Pretty close to the above, but with clotted cream and a massive cheeseboard. I'm lactose intolerant, but could enjoy this in the circumstances. Bring on the Stilton!

ScrambledEggs12 · 27/07/2025 15:25

If you're doing Beef Wellington I'd probably do individual ones in case different people want them cooked differently.

”Britain” is just a casual term so could mean GB or UK. It is not a geographically or politically correct term.
Whilst they are British citizens NI is not part of GB. It is part of the UK.
The British Isles includes even Ireland a so that really would widen the blanket.

This is all why I said technically. It’s factually accurate (currently). Sorry to be a pedant!

Crikeyalmighty · 27/07/2025 15:29

@Comedycook that’s probably what I would do

comedinewithme2025 · 27/07/2025 14:40

Thanks for all the great ideas, my mouth is watering now 😂
My original plan was - homemade scotch eggs, fish, chips and mushy peas then trifle for pudding but as someone mentioned, doing the fish and chips would be tricky as I only have a small space to work in!
Thats when I decided to ask the group chat for help 😂
I love the regional idea. I'm from Lancashire so maybe some cockles/seafood with nice bread and butter, a hotpot and trifle would work?
Although, I'd rather not do a hotpot as I do really enjoy cooking and this would feel a bit too 'easy'
On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is a beef Wellington? 🤔

Pan Haggerty is a great dish from Lancashire, you could serve that with a salad rather than doing hotpot?

Ilovemyshed · 27/07/2025 15:35

I’d start with a seasonal soup

Followed by a summer lamb dish - either roast with new potatoes and garden peas or Cutlets and the same
alternatively Scottish salmon

Finish with gooseberry or rhubarb crumble and clotted cream

@Bikergran tell me more about this “Roast duck with lemon and herb stuffing”, please!

As it says....make stuffing with fresh white or brown breadcrumbs, (not the dried stuff you buy in packets) finely shredded onion, shallot or leek, grated lemon zest, lots of finely chopped fresh parsley and a little bit of finely chopped sage. Season with salt and pepper. Mix all together with a little butter and enough lemon juice to hold it all together. Wipe out inside iof duck thoroughly with paper towel, stuff loosely with stuffing, then roast duck as usual until the skin is crisp and brown and a skewer in the leg joint produces clear juice, not blood. Any spare stuffing can be roasted as stuffing balls, or wrapped in bacon and cooked to make bacon rolls to eat with the duck. Sorry no amounts, I make it up as I go usually.
