Each summer, we take turns to plan our own "Come Dine With Me"
This years theme is countries, and I have Britain 🇬🇧

What would you make for a British starter, main and dessert? I'm in desperate need of inspiration!

Also while you are here - what would your 'Death Row' meal be? 😋

There is no British cuisine. There's Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and various regional dishes from England.

Packet of crisps
Tikka masala
Gypsy tart

Simplepink · 27/07/2025 14:20

Certainly wouldn’t make fish and chips. Hard to do properly.
Concentrate on the part of the UK you’re from or live in.
do something seasonal

Either do your regional cuisine, or do an actual British menu and include dishes from all four constituent countries?

mamagogo1 · 27/07/2025 14:31

Favourite last meal?

lobster with prawn and hollandais sauce, lamb, dauphinois potatoes and redcurrant jus, dark chocolate tart

Octavia64 · 27/07/2025 14:31

Roast.
curry

puddings are probably easiest - sticky toffee, summer pudding, apple crumble etc.

PerfectTuesday · 27/07/2025 14:32

Agree with Coronation chicken as a starter - to acknowledge the huge influence of Indian spices on British cuisine.

Then maybe something like venison steaks and roast potatoes.

Then perhaps Eton mess for pudding.

ETA - death row meal - the biggest, hottest curry to be had with a huge garlic naan. My death would have to take place in the interval between finishing it and violent heartburn kicking in, which sadly now stops me having anything but a mild curry.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 27/07/2025 14:35

I'd do - Starter: potted shrimp with thin toast
Main Course: roast lamb, roast potatoes (in goose fat), asparagus, gravy, mint sauce
Dessert: Eton Mess or strawberries and cream.

Death row meal: Starter: prawn cocktail
Main Course: Steak or lamb chops and chips- preferably the chips would be crinkle cut and fried in Spry Crisp 'n' Dry but the one from the 1970s that tasted very different to the one of today.
Dessert: Apple Pie with really decent custard or ice cream with warm bits of brownies and marshmallow in them - when they go cold they go hard in the ice cream.
My death row meal seems to be reminiscent of food I ate in the late 1970s/early 1980s - I may be a bit stuck in the past!

ChicOliveCritic · 27/07/2025 14:35

Starter: Prawn cocktail or a quintessential English soup. Mains: Roast beef with Yorkshire's and seasonal vegetables medley? Pan fried Salmon with vegetables? Shepherd's or Cottage Pie again with seasoned vegetables. Desserts: Pavlova, Eton Mess, Apple Crumble and Custard? Syrup Sponge Pudding, Trifle?

There is no British cuisine. There's Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish and various regional dishes from England.

Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland all have separate regional cuisines within each country as well just like England does. They aren’t monoliths. 🤨

But yes, I do agree with you generally @HelenaWaiting.

comedinewithme2025 · 27/07/2025 14:40

Thanks for all the great ideas, my mouth is watering now 😂
My original plan was - homemade scotch eggs, fish, chips and mushy peas then trifle for pudding but as someone mentioned, doing the fish and chips would be tricky as I only have a small space to work in!
Thats when I decided to ask the group chat for help 😂
I love the regional idea. I'm from Lancashire so maybe some cockles/seafood with nice bread and butter, a hotpot and trifle would work?
Although, I'd rather not do a hotpot as I do really enjoy cooking and this would feel a bit too 'easy'
On a scale of 1-10, how difficult is a beef Wellington? 🤔

by that logic there is no such thing as Italian, Indian, Japanese, or Thai cuisine either...

Aintgointogoa · 27/07/2025 14:42

@comedinewithme2025 I loved doing this with some foodie pals ! I won with some elaborate cod and clam thing...like a stew. I probably spent the most dosh ha ha ! Having a theme is a great idea. I like @DriveMeCrazy1974 menu...I would also have a British cheese board. I'm not very pudding-y tho. Do tell what you decide finally !
