Butter or any type of spread in sandwiches?
If I make say a cheese and tomato sandwich/roll, I never spread the bread with butter/margarine as it literally makes me heave. I might spread on a bit of mayo if it seems dry but that's it. If I go to a cafe I ask for the spread to be left out. If I buy a supermarket sandwich I can only eat tuna mayo as for some reason the spread doesn't bother me and is usually invisible.
I'm not fussy in any other way and have never met anyone else with the same aversion.

You would be at home in the US. Spreading butter/margarine on a sandwich is unheard of.

Devilsmommy · 27/07/2025 13:32

I use mayo or coleslaw because I hate a dry sandwich

cyvguhb · 27/07/2025 13:38

I found out recently that the whole of America doesn't put butter/margarine in sandwiches so there's 300 million people like you 😁

Id guess there are loads of other non Americans who do the same

goudacheese · 27/07/2025 13:44

Never knew that! Learn something new every day.

Totally agree. Butter on its own - fine. Butter (or worse, margarine) getting on other foods inside a sandwich. Makes me heave.

Parkingaway · 27/07/2025 13:46

I don’t eat butter on sandwiches, or mayo either. They do tend to fall apart 😁

Myblueclematis · 27/07/2025 13:54

One of my friends never has butter or spread of any type on sandwiches, scones or toasted teacakes.

I have to have something on mine, always butter. If I don't, I can't swallow the food. Weird I know ...🙄

Clarinet1 · 27/07/2025 13:56

I find a tiny spread a margarine hardly tastes of anything at all but helps the sandwich stay together! However I don’t want anything with peanut butter.

Parkingaway · 27/07/2025 13:57

It’s not the taste so much though, it’s the texture of it that I don’t like.

AmusedOpalShaker · 27/07/2025 13:58

Yep, can’t stand it.

Mumofteensandcats · 27/07/2025 14:06

With you completely! My mum recently said how she used to worry about being judged as throughout primary school I had a dry jam sandwich daily! Butter in a sandwich makes me feel sick!

RealEagle · 27/07/2025 14:12

Butter and plenty of it for me. My husband no butter.

TomatoSandwiches · 27/07/2025 14:13

Id rather NOT have a sandwich if it doesn't have butter and I mean proper butter, salted.

I would not eat a sandwich with spread, margarine.

DeirdreChambersWhatACoincidence · 27/07/2025 14:14

Oh no I love butter on.

Totally agree. Makes the sandwich greasy

PerfectTuesday · 27/07/2025 14:17

No, I add marge or butter as long as it's a brand I like. However, I'll leave it out for health reasons if it's quite a wet filling anyway, as it's not really noticeable so it's an easy win if trying to reduce the calories of the sandwich. Totally needed on a cheese sandwich though!

AcquadiP · 27/07/2025 14:17

I don't use anything on a tuna mayo sandwich. I rarely eat sandwiches but if I do I prefer an Olive Oil based spread, used sparingly.

JoshLymanSwagger · 27/07/2025 14:20

I use a little butter in sandwiches, unless there's tons of salad and then I use mayo.

I never have butter on toast if I'm putting marmalade or jam on it...scones too, actually - jam only.

😁

DinaofCloud9 · 27/07/2025 14:22

No I don't either. I don't think I have such a strong dislike as you though lol. I just prefer it without.

VeryStressedMum · 27/07/2025 14:24

I don't put butter in a sandwich as I don't really like butter that much and I don't really think it adds anything to the sandwich.
I have it on toast though. Or on fresh crusty bread then I have lots of butter with a bit of salt.
So maybe I do like butter

SweetFancyMoses · 27/07/2025 14:26

Not only do I not like butter, I also dislike sandwiches and never, ever, eat them. I’m a lost cause.

CatAsstrophe · 27/07/2025 14:30

I'm in the no butter/no spread camp. I don't like mayo or any other type of sauce (ketchup, brown sauce etc) either

A sandwich for me consists of bread and filling - bread and chicken, bread and bacon. The thought of my teeth sinking into something 'wet' on a sandwich makes me feel queasy. Yes, I am a fussy eater 😁

JDM625 · 27/07/2025 14:34

I'm the same OP. I had butter on sandwiches as a child, but when I was cutting calories in my 20's, I stopped. I still have it on new potatoes, just not on sandwiches or crackers.

My in-laws spread it meticulously to every corner of the bread and its about 0.5cm thick. Made be gag because it felt like I was just eating a greasy, butter pack 🤢

Nourishinghandcream · 27/07/2025 14:38

Have never had butter in a sandwich, even as a child.
Would eat hot toast or crumpets with melted butter, but never on ordinary bread.

My go-to lubricant for a sandwich was either sandwich spread or salad cream.

whatsit84 · 27/07/2025 14:40

I feel I’ve learnt something about Americans today 😂 I even like butter when there is a filling like tuna mayo. Just something about it…..
