Dawn O'Porter

Aibu to feel irritated by Dawn O'porter moaning in The Mail - i know !!! about being secretly broke or should i feel sorry for her for living with a rich husband who possibly doesn't share his wealth (which i think is a little unlikely ) with her ?
People in her position should keep their mouths shut out of respect for others who really do live from paycheck to paycheck and genuinely do wonder when this will ever end !

Dawn's husband is someone I have never warmed to, so whilst I have not read the article, what you describe is no surprise.

WFHmutha25 · 26/07/2025 10:15

What has she said?

pinkdelight · 26/07/2025 10:16

Annoyed that I just read that article and it was basically saying nothing. Why did they even interview her? There's nothing to say. Woman who writes bits of things here and there rather than getting a real job doesn't make much money. Stop the press! And I say that as a writer myself but if she's not selling anything then she needs to diversify like anyone else. Presumably it's so we can speculate on the state of their marriage rather than the economy/media or the lot of trailing spouses, but it's really so minor and unmotivated waffle that it's hard to get up much interest.

SriouslyWhutNow · 26/07/2025 10:16

I don't read the Mail but if someone's going through financial abuse it doesn't matter how rich their husband is, does it? They're still worthy of support to get out of the situation.

I'd never heard of her. Having googled her I think Ive vaguely heard of her H.

Yes people who are suffering financial abuse should be supported.

But as usual if your name is in the public domain, or you are married to someone in the public domain, even in a minor way, then you get opportunities to publicise your problems. And garner sympathy and support.

The vast majority of women who are in financially abusive relationships don't get the chance to get help and support because their position is not newsworthy and they are not deemed to be of any importance.

It's the unfairness of the focus of those deemed newsworthy that rankles in items like these.

rookiemere · 26/07/2025 10:29

What a strange article. It does read rather as if she’s gearing up for divorce, I mean most of us manage to pay our bills without being married to someone who has appeared in Hollywood blockbusters and is presumably well paid.
It isn’t very lucrative being an author, but due to her past TV career she has some recognition, so should be using that to bolster her income.
I always thought she had her head switched on and was relatable, but there’s little worse than an upper middle class luvvie complaining of being broke.

Of course financial abuse matters but that's not how i read it , i agree the article doesn't say much , i have very little interest in 'celebrity' but saw the headline ,i think it's more of a 'look at humble little me '.

Get her on Strictly! Glitterball

I don't know her outgoings but London is expensive and whilst she has had a few successful books, she's also been doing substack/patreon.

Apparently she launched The O'Portal last year.
O'Dear to that name.
That said, Dawn O'Dowd sounds similar to Dawn of the dead. O'Porter makes no sense at all.

This is a fluffy interview perhaps soliciting TV work she used to do. She is either:

  1. In the Amanda Abbington situation with Martin Freeman but at least she has a ring on it
  2. A spendthrift/shopaholic
  3. Experiencing reverse culture shock/realising COL here is through the roof
  4. Using hyperbole to come across as one of us, when she's not really

One thing I do see is that she had Trailing Spouse syndrome, if alone in the States whilst her partner was off 3/4 of the year and I imagine it can feel very isolating.

Hopefully, she hasn't gone from the frying pan to the fire as moving back was always going to be hard and I'm really not sure the UK now is what she remembers. That said, you've had Ellen De Generes move and stay here because America seems to be changing.

Get Portia de Rossi on Strictly!

TheCurious0range · 26/07/2025 10:33

She writes books, she has clothing collaborations, she previously did TV work so I'm sure if she wanted to work more she could.
It's odd. Woman doesn't work much so doesn't get paid as much as she would like. She's also not exactly on NMW and has a wealthy husband..... I read one of her books recently picked it up on a whim in a supermarket when I had a long train journey, it was actually quite good, easily readable and quite funny.

ETA actually having read the whole thing it seems more like jealousy that her husband had the success she didn't. Wanted to be on the red carpet for herself not him, couldn't get the TV channels to make anything with her in them. Her remit was quite niche fun what I remember. Line a budget cross between Stacey Dooley and Claudia winkelman with a little trinny and Susannah thrown in. In her mind she's not a celebrity because people won't pay her money for doing things she has no talent for and she has to 'work hard' writing books sold two for £9 in Tesco. Whereas her husband is a very successful and talented actor.

rookiemere · 26/07/2025 10:40

I would have a lot more sympathy had she focused her article on it being difficult to keep her career going because her DH was often away and she is effectively solo parent to her DCs. It is mentioned, but more emphasis on the goodness me how can I have nothing in my bank account.

Screamingabdabz · 26/07/2025 10:45

It sounds more like she’s not very organised. If her card was cancelled it’s probably because she hasn’t paid the bill rather than she can’t afford it.

As someone who is genuinely poor, it does still in the craw when millionaires who live in multi million pound properties in London and send their kids to private school moan that they’re ‘skint’.

I like her, and miss her on TV, but come on Dawn, have a bit of self awareness.

Met them both, twats the pair of them.

Oh really that’s a shame. I developed a weird, inappropriate crush on Chris O’Dowd after he appeared in a Victorian BBC series many years ago, and they both seemed like they might be quite grounded.

I bet Portia would be AMAZING! 😍

mightbetheone · 26/07/2025 11:27

She strikes me as someone who wants to be famous but doesn’t really know what her niche is. She’s done some fluffy tv shows, written some not very good books and didn’t she have a vintage fashion brand at one point too? Not to be cruel as she seems a nice lady, but she probably just needs to get a proper job.

Cakeandcheeseforever · 26/07/2025 11:35

I took a look at one of the vintage clothes collections she did, but it was lots of very long trailing sleeves and long dresses, it would have totally swamped me. Not very practical for everyday life

MasterBeth · 26/07/2025 11:44

Poor reading skills from the lot of you. The Mail hasn't interviewed her, they've pulled some arbitrary quotes off a podcast.

You have no idea of the context of the conversation.

incognitomouse · 26/07/2025 11:44

Tone deaf article.

SaintGermain · 26/07/2025 11:45

Wasn’t she outed on here as being the school bully?

Ghastly, vacuous woman bleating on about moving from America to London where she now feels safe apparently. Mainly because she lives in SE16 (Southwark Park Road) a nice area as opposed to the shitty areas.

Doingmybest12 · 26/07/2025 11:48

What a very odd interview. She sounds like she has lost touch with reality.

Fair enough. Please enlighten us.
Assuming you have heard the podcast yourself, what was the context?
Thanks in advance Flowers

Anyone with a high maintenance signature hairstyle is somewhere along the annoying spectrum. Sorry Claudia.

northernballer · 26/07/2025 11:55

She makes a point of saying she couldn't get her kids into state schools when I suspect what actually happened is she couldn't get her kids into the nice state school that is effectively private due to the house prices that she wanted and wasn't prepared to put them where she was offered. Two kids in private school in London would stretch anyone!

FrothyCothy · 26/07/2025 12:02

The transcript of the whole podcast is available online and the money comment is one tiny part of it - this is such a nothing story from the mail 😆
