To panic

Due on in 4 days, also due to go on holiday in 4 days. I got norethisterone ready to take it 3 days before expected period. Today I'm spotting. I'm usually like clockwork and this never happens, I already took the first tablet today as soon as I saw the spotting. But aibu to worry it won't work!?

Not really something worth panicking about. Mildly irritating but worse things happen! Just get some tampons!

PurpleChrayn · 25/07/2025 06:51

Get some tampons/ towels and a grip.

ForGoldRobin · 25/07/2025 07:20

Okay, not quite sure why you are being rude about it? My periods are extremely excruciating and heavy, not that I should have to explain myself! If you can't answer the question given, don't respond maybe?

I think it's you that should get a grip .

Stop taking it I made that mistake… it just made imy period last longer because I didn’t catch it in advance.

You literally asked if you’re being unreasonable to panic. Why ask if you only want one answer?

SunnyViper · 25/07/2025 07:24

Agree with others. Annoying but nothing to panic about.

I'm clearly posting here for traffic. Maybe empathy? Just this once? No?

See everyone else? This is what a HELPFUL response looks like. This is why this website has such an awful rep

How frustrating for you especially if you have heavy and painful periods. I'm not really sure if the tablets would still work (pharmacist might be your best bet if you can't speak to the GP before).
Only asking because I spotted a few days before my expected period and it turned out to be pregnancy, could this be the same for you? Absolutely not being cheeky or rude, just as you say you're extremely regular (I was too!)

No, no chance of pregnancy. I'm just gonna keep taking it and pray haha.

Rest of you can suck eggs.

Have you ever used a moon cup? I've used one for the last 20 years and honestly are amazing. You'll be able to wear a bikini with one. You can insert it before your period starts too, so no leaks xx

autienotnaughty · 25/07/2025 07:35

People will reply based on their experience. I have heavy periods so getting one on holiday is a grief as I can’t use the pool. But some people don’t have that issue so don’t understand.
you posted on Aibu because you wanted lots of reply’s. With that you will get a variety of opinions. If u wanted sympathy or specific advice you are better off on health board or something

Standardpain · 25/07/2025 07:37

I think the problem is when people look at your thread when they see AIBU to panic they are expecting to read about a truly possible life threatening or life shattering situation. Hence the feeling when it turns out that it's really not either of those that you are being over dramatic and so you are getting unsympathetic answers.

As someone who is well past the menopause I have no advice to offer. I suffered very heavy and irregular periods at a time when the option to delay them by using medication was not generally available so I find that women now have this option as routine really interesing.

Haveyoubrushedyourteeth · 25/07/2025 07:38

I'd hope for the best and plan for worst. If you haven't already got some then order some period underwear and swimwear as an extra layer of protection alongside tampons. They'll just give you that extra level of reassurance.
My periods seem to always go from regular to irritatingly out of sync when im heading away too, it's frustrating as hell so I hear you.

Nah. Do what everyone else in this situation does. Get on with it. I’m on both my holiday and my period at the moment 🤷‍♀️ it’s life.

HappilyUrbanTrimmer · 25/07/2025 07:42

Glad you got the info you needed @ForGoldRobin, and well done to @Wholelotagrey for providing it. But OP you can't expect people to be psychic. Look at what you originally wrote again without the knowledge that you have unusually difficult periods. Of course the vast majority of women wouldn't have a problem with being on day 4 past the start of their period the day they go on holiday. For most women it will be a tiny trickle barely worthy of a tampon by then. Winthout the critical information that it's not like that for you, the idea of panicking is ludicrous. I'm so sorry that all your careful planning has made the norethisterone plan no longer appropriate. If you can (perhaps with a private GP) you might find that some really heavy-duty NSAI drugs (I mean a few steps more powerful than the ibuprofen you can buy otc, so you'd need a prescription) might help to reduce the flow - it doesn't stop it altogether but you might get it down to the level where you can enjoy the holiday if suitably equipped with period-proof swimwear.

shellyleppard · 25/07/2025 07:50

@ForGoldRobin if the website is that bad then why are you posting the question??? Yes its a heavy period. Yes we have all had them at some point. Take the tablets, take extra sanitary protection/underwear.... sorted!!

Clarefromwork · 25/07/2025 07:52

Despite all the adverts showing woman swimming, running, cartwheeling, deep sea diving with a massive grin on their face whilst on their periods, we are also allowed to admit that they are not nice, ruin plans and can just be shit.

My period started earlier than expected but I just kept taking it and it stopped after a couple of days

jetlag92 · 25/07/2025 07:57

Some great responses OP. Really helpful.

I had horrific periods for a few years and they'd be no way I could have gone on holiday in the middle of them and yes, I've tried tranexamic acid (forms massive clots and a moon cup (leaks) and I've had an ablation which didn't really work.

My perimenopausal periods were really irregular too, so I'd have no idea when I get them. So I've taken norethisterone many times at the start of my period and it works absolutely fine. You do feel a bit bloated for the first couple of days though.
