I haven’t even bothered reading your thread OP. No civilised society should ever have the death penalty, no matter how heinous the crime. Let’s face it, life without parole is basically the death penalty anyway 🤷‍♀️ To me, it doesn’t matter if they only execute one wrongly convicted person every 100 years, that’s one too many. A posthumous pardon means bugger all.

uk is definitely not civilised. Turn the tv on

Glitchymn1 · 25/07/2025 17:14

In cases where they are caught red handed, I’m thinking Wolfgang Priklopil, Myra Hindley, Rose West, Fred West. I believe in the death penalty,
after anything useful has been harvested.
Most take their own lives before trial or would do so if they weren’t afraid.

Why would you want to keep them around?

Because where is the cut off line….

Safe from whom?

Safe for the people living there. Obviously.

NaiveDuck · 25/07/2025 17:17

I'm just wondering who here thinks Baby P's murderers (who I understand are out of jail already!!) should have received the death penalty?

Or James Bulger's killers, who offended repeatedly and will be paid to be protected for life, a cost to us all?

Be honest in your answer.

Would you feel safe living under a repressive government that doesn't respect your rights?

No I dont

as someone upthread pointed out they need to spend 5 years minimum in death row before it gets looked at. Assuming that would be the case here

have you any idea what a prisoner will be like facing the Dp? How difficult they would be in our U.K. prisons as they stand now. To manage on a day to day basis? The absolute drain on resources they would be when faced with the Dp? Do you know how much it would cost? Do you know how dangerous they would become?

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 25/07/2025 17:25

the prison service has no money for DP conditions….none

Fair post. I just feel so upset by this story.

It is upsetting. But you feeling upset isn't a valid reason to radically change the law and give the state the power to murder people.

There is certainly a debate to be had there, as I said in previous posts. I've also already said I'm not in favour of the death penalty because of the risk of innocent people being wrongly convicted.

What I've disagreed with a PP about is whether punishment ever acts as a deterrent. They said it didn't. I said I think if all punishments were abolished, crime rates would skyrocket. Equally, if running a red light carried the death penalty I think suddenly everyone would be driving much more carefully. Punishment is an important tool to use when trying to ensure a safe society.

What difference does it make? You want Rose West, or Priklopil released? The world would be a better place without them in it.

@NaiveDuck yes, I think they should have died. Why does it need to be a long drawn out process, firing squad would do.

YouWillFindMeInTheGarden · 25/07/2025 17:32

not so sure the ‘punishment’ of prison works. Look at the recall rate

however, certain prisoners I’ve known have been very vocal about the state of our prison and the way MOJ runs, I’ve never seen those men back.

No we are too gutless and lenient. No doubt it will continue.

I don’t understand the sympathetic posts, how you can sympathise or humanise a rapist, torturer, murderer of children is beyond me.

naturalcrackle111 · 25/07/2025 16:43

Not a flex just stating facts. And it doesn’t matter what you consider comfort. The bottom line of it is that people think prison is hard and a deterrent when in fact it not.

How many prisons have you been in?

What do you mean by sympathy? Not agreeing with the death penalty is not sympathising.

Only one of James Bulger's killers has offended repeatedly.

I don’t understand either. And not one person here has answered why the ones caught red handed can’t be executed, they keep coming back to “they could be innocent” 🤦🏻‍♀️ and “we live in a civilised country” yeah right cause we do. With its two tier system 🤷🏻‍♀️

Loads of people have answered why the ones caught red handed can't be executed. They just haven't given an answer you like.

I think that it’s uncivilised for us, as a society to pay people to kill people. And anyone who wants to do the job should by definition not be allowed to do it. “Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind”

I'm guessing you're an opponent of international and human rights law. Most Western countries don't have the death penalty because of the risk of miscarriage of justice and because it's considered a form of torture.

Living in a decent and civilised society means that everyone is equal under the law. That includes convicted criminals I'm afraid. I take it you aren't in favour of a two tier justice system.
