AIBU to want a party to "take on the rich and powerful" but without all the woke stuff? I don't really like that term but you know what I mean. Why doesn't this seem to be an option

What’s your definition of rich and powerful?

TheGrimSmile · 24/07/2025 20:56

Yabu for using the term "woke" 🙄

MiloMinderbinder925 · 24/07/2025 20:59

This country votes for right wing parties. The current Labour government wouldn't be described as left wing and anything too left scares the horses. We have a rabid right wing media which won't allow the public to vote against their interests. They're part of the people you want to target as are their chums, so it's unlikely to happen.

The populace enjoy voting for parties that don't have their best interests at heart and seem to think if you keep voting for them, they'll turn into one that does.

lljkk · 24/07/2025 20:59

By definition as soon as a party is "in power", their leaders become the powerful.

Parties without money don't win... the leaders deserve to be well compensated if we don't want them to steal from public purse. We live in a capitalist system where people who do well in their career get paid more money, so invariably become one of the rich.

Does OP just want poor rabble rousers to lead a party that annoys the party in power, but rabble rowsersw never actually get in power?

Nellodee · 24/07/2025 21:00

Unfortunately, Britain makes a lot of its money from being a financial hub. A ruling party needs to be pragmatic, as many things that seem “fair” could end up costing us a lot of revenue in the long run.

hiintrepidheroes · 24/07/2025 21:03

Sadly we live in a country where no one wants to vote for parties that would do something about the things they complain about.

Gaza, terrible. Education funding, terrible. NHS funding, terrible.

But oh no, it’s too extreme to vote for a party that would tackle these issues.

millymollymoomoo · 24/07/2025 21:10

And do what ?
tax them all so they’re no longer rich ? Or tax them so they leave?
and please define rich

Dweetfidilove · 24/07/2025 21:30

We almost had such a government but the rich and powerful told us it would be the end of Britain, so we ducked it up.

That, plus we were hoodwinked into lending our votes to 'get Brexit done', so again, here we are.

We get the useless, self-serving governments we deserve and struggle accordingly.

You know exactly what I mean though. OK, in place of woke, read extreme social constructivist agenda

You make it sound like there is actually a choice, rather than it in actual fact being limited to either the blue or red uniparty?

"We have a rabid right wing media which won't allow the public to vote against their interests. "

This seems a rather dated and irrelevant trope now when the BBC and the Guardian dominate, are they rabidly right wing? Trust in legacy media is collapsing, fast, and the result is Reform ascending. We've had Brexit and the US has seen the election of Trump, twice.

You say it as though there is an option which is in my interests. There isn't. Economic redistribution without the liberal bs, is what I would like to vote for.

Who is that party?

Where is all that money going? Its hard to believe it is actually circulating around the country in a way people would actually feel, when standards of living are falling and the middle classes are being squeezed into non existence

The Rich and powerful keep society functioning . They start businesses , keep people employed etc

Soulfulunfurling · 25/07/2025 06:36

They have no chance - they are an aging bunch of middle class hippies pretending to be rebels because they were too well behaved at school.

If they ever had a stab at government they would sink the country overnight. The markets and investors would shrink and evaporate on impact. You would lose most public services, and poverty would rocket. It’s would be quickest way to become the equivalent of North Korea.

No thanks.

Take a look at the ballooning bills for social care or the immigration accommodation bill? Or the NHS for that matter. Defence. All of this is ‘invisible’ but costing tens of billions.

I don't really think we have an 'open border' but I understand what you mean. I'd be interested to know how you think we could close it.

Strawberrri · 25/07/2025 06:55

Every adult in Uk shops via Amazon to buy the cheapest option of clothes, electrical goods, widgets, household goods all of which are made in China (a few in Vietnam etc)
Sooooooo our money is going to American finance companies Amazon,PayPal, world pay etc whose profits go to California with a bit of tax paid to Ireland. China earns the rest.

The only people making from these colossal companies are the delivery drivers and Amazon warehouses (people rave about Amazon as being good employers haha),
so all our earnings go abroad.
So the rich people such as few remaining business owners in th UK should be hammered with high tax?Wealthy people in the U.K. who may have made their money overseas or might be foreign born should fork out for all these benefit payments the bottomless NHS. ??
