To think there are very few allies against Anti-Semitism?

This month, I have had experienced Anti-Semitism twice. Both times I was with my children.

Both times, my children were distressed, and no one around did anything to protect us or raise the alarm. When we asked for help, we were dismissed. We were in very busy public spaces both times: a tube platform, then a high street.

I reported the first episode to the police. I'm not even sure if it's worth reporting the second episode. Sadly it feels so mainstream, and the authorities are not supportive when I report it either.

I’m sorry to hear that you experienced this OP. Please know that there are many of us horrified by the rise in anti Semitism in this country. Many so called “progressives” don’t see it as a form of racism which is a stain on our society

there’s a lot of awful stuff shared online too - have seen some awful stuff on instagram. It’s been becoming so normalised I think a lot of people don’t register it at all.

i hope you have a good community around you to support you. Please report the second incident if you can - it’s important reports are received so there’s a true picture of what’s going on.

I think the term allies is a loaded and potentially provocative one, so it's not surprising the thread was derailed. I'm also not surprised that members of the public didn’t intervene as many people would be too scared. The police’s dismissive response is expected; they often focus only on cases with a realistic chance of prosecution. They’re also known to be institutionally racist, the Stephen Lawrence case shows how little this country has historically cared about racism, and I don’t believe things have improved much. I don’t think racism has increased, but racists now feel more comfortable expressing their views. The anti-immigration protests and race riots of 2024 reflect a broader trend of individuals feeling emboldened to voice their prejudice openly.

I recently watched a very vicious attack - a group of boys and young men chasing another group of boys. Unfortunately, one of the boys did not run quick enough and he was kicked in the head multiple times. It was evident he needed to be take to hospital, however the police treated like him like he was a criminal. The police had no real interest in what had happened other than if anyone filmed the incident. The police also ignored request from members of the public to call an ambulance.

With ample CCTV, witnesses, and perpetrators who tapped in and out of the station (using either a bank card or an oyster with their name) surely there is a good chance of prosecution?

The Stephen Lawrence case was tragic, and completely appalling, but a very long time ago, and I would hope there would be chance since then.

It wasn't just that people didn't intervene at the time, but no one helped afterwards, or kept us safe.

@Longingdreamer I could be wrong but from experience, I don't think the police will do much. When deciding if a suspect should be charged, police generally work with the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS).The two tests which must be met for the CPS to authorise charges are whether there is sufficient evidence for a realistic prospect of conviction and if a prosecution is in the public interest. I hate to be pessimistic, but I suspect the police will deem a waste of time and resources to do an investigation, even if they have cctv footage etc. In general, it quite difficult gather evidence.

Change since then? No. The far more recent Baroness Casey review called out the Met Police for being institutionally racist, misogynistic and homophobic.

This is not presented as an excuse, as the lack of compassion to you and your family is terrible, but explanation that very little has really changed in Policing.

I hope you are doing OK as this thread is also a difficult read in places.

That's really sad to hear.

You are right with regards to this thread, people are very willing to show there Anti-Semitism at present. Some comments have been deleted, but Mumsnet doesn't have a problem with some that are still very problematic.

I am realistic that it is unlikely to result in a prosecution, but I hope that at least by reporting it, there will be some awareness of the issues.

I wrote to my MP who has been wholly unhelpful too, but that is unsurprising given their track record of only representing part of the community. What a sad time we live in.
