To think there are very few allies against Anti-Semitism?

Longingdreamer · 24/07/2025 14:04

This month, I have had experienced Anti-Semitism twice. Both times I was with my children.

Both times, my children were distressed, and no one around did anything to protect us or raise the alarm. When we asked for help, we were dismissed. We were in very busy public spaces both times: a tube platform, then a high street.

I reported the first episode to the police. I'm not even sure if it's worth reporting the second episode. Sadly it feels so mainstream, and the authorities are not supportive when I report it either.

When I called to report the attack on my daughter I was told not to bother because no one ended up in hospital so it wasn’t serious enough

I'm so sorry to hear this. That is completely unacceptable. Do you mind saying which police force this was?

Given the current situation that's an unbelievably crass and cynical response

I’d call it more a silly response.

That's shocking. I hope she's ok.

@Longingdreamer Just popping in to see how you are today.
I can see there are some parallel discussions happening but I wanted you to know that not everyone wants to derail your thread

That's because it's the only Jewish state
It is unique.

Yeah it’s the only Jewish state. So what? Why does that mean that its actions can’t be criticised when the actions of Iraq and Russia can be called evil, dictatorial, corrupt and run by despots? A couple of years ago there was a lot of focus on Ukraine and people did nothing but criticise Russia. Now the focus has shifted to Israel due to its actions in Gaza. I don’t know what else to say but you’re not going to convince the whole world to turn a blind eye just because it’s the only Jewish state in the world.

BeatrizBoniface · 25/07/2025 14:22

@Glowingup I never said that their actions couldn't be criticised. You're the second poster who has claimed that. Read my post.

I never said it did

You said that in response to a post saying 'The issue is also compounded by the fact that Israel demands a free pass for its actions and claims that any criticism is hatred of all Jews.'

So a bit weird.

It's not weird. It's just my opinion. I don't think I'd call other people's opinions "weird". But then I don't do personal attacks. I prefer to discuss the issues rather than get personal.

ForMauveSquid · 25/07/2025 14:34

I'm so sorry you and your children experienced that — it's unacceptable. Please do report the second incident; even if the response feels inadequate, documenting it helps build a record and shows it’s not isolated. You might also consider reaching out to Community Security Trust (CST) — they can offer support, advice, and help liaise with the police. You’re not alone, and this should not be normalised.

BeatrizBoniface · 25/07/2025 14:34

To answer your question OP, it would appear to be true that there are, depressingly, few allies to fight antisemitism. The anger on here is palpable, and is the case whenever Israel gets discussed, nowadays.
However, it's troubling that the two get conflated and that reasoned debate gets ever harder to achieve.
All the best, stay safe 🙏

You're saying that Israel should get a free pass because it is a uniquely Jewish state.

I think me describing that view as 'weird' is mild, quite frankly. In actual fact, it's deplorable.

Sorry to hear this op

I rarely witness it in rl although I’m sure it happens, I do try to counter it on SM (on here mostly).

Longingdreamer · 25/07/2025 11:33

If you read the thread, I have clarified. Are you saying you don't believe victims? The statistics are easily accessible regarding anti-semitic hate crimes.

I question the purpose of your response. Do you disbelieve all victims of hate crime, or just Jews?

This is a good question to that post.

Thank you for highlighting. Yes, the CST is brilliant and I am very grateful for them.

So what was the purpose of saying it was unique then? What does the fact that it’s the only Jewish state in the world have to do with criticism of its actions?

There are very few allies in general sadly. As a Muslim woman I'm very used to Islamophobia on a daily basis, I'd be more shocked if someone tried to defend me. It's utterly rubbish that this is so normalized. Sending you 💐OP.

I'm not disgruntled by this. At all.
My comment is that, unfortunately, antisemitism draws in current debate about Israel. Much of it valid in itself, but not necessarily relevant to the situation at hand. However, I do think currently that because of the situation, there is more obvious antisemitism. Now whether that's just people getting angry and not always limiting the anger or whether people feel all Jews are involved, I can't say.
I'm not disgruntled. Just feel sorry for Jews who get targeted. Unfairly.
Oh, and before further accusations begin; I am not in any way, shape or form, condoning current events in Gaza, which are distressing in the extreme
This is about the OP and her situation.

That's shocking and distressing too. I've read about the increase in Islamophobia as well. It's as if our society has become less tolerant. Jumping on each other, focusing on difference
I hope you can stay safe too 🙏

Lollypop267 · 25/07/2025 15:33

I'm sorry you and your children have felt targeted and am glad you are safe

Are you able to quote the source that states Jews are the most at risk minority?

BrokenHabit · 25/07/2025 15:34

Longingdreamer · 24/07/2025 17:44

Yes, this is very true. The attitude was one of dismissal, rather than care. My children and I were visibly distressed, with the children crying. You would think that the normal reaction would be one of care and compassion, but sadly that is only available to certain people nowadays. Jews don't count.

I am really sorry you were not shown compassion.

I am an Asian Muslim but live in the most Jewish borough in the country in N London! Hence I have a lot of friends that happen to be Jewish. I hate that they are experiencing this, that their kids aren’t feeling safe at school, that their older children have dropped out of Jewish society at University etc. So many innocent people being targeted.

I honestly don’t know why ‘minorities’ don’t support each other more. We should have a little more understanding I think due to our shared experience.

I like to think that I would have stood up and supported you.
