Went for a meal with my parents this evening. Got on to the topic of eye colour. It occurred me that my mum has brown eyes and my dad has blue eyes.
I seem to have green eyes which apparently is not possible with blue eye and brown eyes parents lol, my mum said that my eyes are blue! What colour would you say they are lol!?
im starting to worry im adopted lol

They dont look green to me, I see blue/grey

Minecroft · 23/07/2025 22:34

Blue grey

RuffledKestrel · 23/07/2025 22:34

Looks like grey eyes to me. There is a complex web of genetics that present grey eyes, it's not as straightforward as blue - brown dominant or recessive alleles.

Lesina · 23/07/2025 22:34

Grey

manicpixieschemegirl · 23/07/2025 22:35

Blue grey. Definitely not in any way green.

menopausalmare · 23/07/2025 22:36

Eye colour is polygenic. Several pairs of genes control eye colour. The GCSE genetics you learned in school is an over simplification. Don't worry about your parentage.

WickWood · 23/07/2025 22:37

Definitely bluey grey, I can't see any green!

Loveduppenguin · 23/07/2025 22:37

You can definitely have green eyes with parents who have blue and brown eyes!!
anyway…I think yours are blue/grey

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/07/2025 22:38

They look blue/ grey to me too. Definitely not green.

Searchingforausername · 23/07/2025 22:39

Your Dad has 2 blue alleles but it is possible that your Mum had 1 green and 1 brown. If you inherited the green allele you’ll have green eyes. Alternatively your Mum might have 1 blue allele and 1 brown allele, and in that case you’ll have blue eyes.

DustyMaiden · 23/07/2025 22:40

My DH has green eyes , I have brown. My 3 DC are green, blue and brown.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/07/2025 22:40

Also my DS has green eyes, I have brown and my exh (definitely his Dad!) has blue. DD has blue.

My Mum has greeny-bluey eyes with a brown flecks so I guess there’s a bit of everything in there! My Dad has brown but lighter than mine.

Exh family all have blue.

Pistachiocake · 23/07/2025 22:40

It's possible for two brown-eyed parents to have a blue-eyed child if both parents carry the recessive blue-eyed gene. Similarly, two blue-eyed parents can have a brown-eyed child if they both carry a hidden dominant brown-eyed gene.
It is true that many believe 2 brown eyed parents can't have a blue eyed kid-even in novels, this was a "clue"-but actually it's not the case, My eye colour is unusual I used an app as people always argued whether my eyes were blue/green/grey. Maybe try that (can't remember which I used, but there must be a few), for a bit of fun, if you want a description of your eye colour.

ninjahamster · 23/07/2025 22:41

I think yours are green/grey.

I have green eyes. My mum has blue, my dad has green.

My husband has blue. All our children together have blue/green. Their eyes truly seem to change colour.

User37482 · 23/07/2025 22:42

Blue

marmite2025 · 23/07/2025 22:43

My mum also has brown eyes and my dad very pale blue eyes
mine are definitely green!

Tulipvase · 23/07/2025 22:43

Isn’t there something about there only being brown and blue eyes and everything else is a variant of them? I may well be making that up though.

CloudyYellow · 23/07/2025 22:44

Your eyes are not green

outrageously · 23/07/2025 22:47

My DD has green eyes and me and DH are brown and blue. So it is possible.

marmite2025 · 23/07/2025 22:51

Brown, blue and green (the blue are much lighter in RL)

Definitely a beautiful smoky blue otherwise known as grey blue.

I can see where you get the green from though as in certain light or against certain colours they may look a bit like a mossy green or so.

Smidge001 · 23/07/2025 22:52

Your eyes look Bluey grey (or grey-ey blue) to me too - I don't see any green in them

ExitPursuedByABare · 23/07/2025 22:54

Your eyes look green around the outer edge fading to blue/grey towards the middle.

Hesma · 23/07/2025 22:54

Definitely possible to have green eyes. My eldest has green eyes, mine are blue and dad’s brown and my youngest has blue. It’s unusual but possible if both parents have recessive green genes.

However from the photo you posted you don’t have green eyes.

Sort of. Eye colour basically comes down to how much melanin is in the iris. It most commonly presents in blues and browns. Brown eyes have the most, grey eyes have next to none.
The hue, which creates hazel and green and grey and amber colours in the iris comes from other substances in the eye. Grey eyes for instance have higher levels of collagen in the stroma.

One of the main ways to separate blue eyes from grey eyes is that blue eyes tend to be paler at the outer edge and darker/more vibrant towards the pupil. Grey eyes are darker at the edges and lighter/more desaturated closer to the pupil.
