Went for a meal with my parents this evening. Got on to the topic of eye colour. It occurred me that my mum has brown eyes and my dad has blue eyes.
I seem to have green eyes which apparently is not possible with blue eye and brown eyes parents lol, my mum said that my eyes are blue! What colour would you say they are lol!?
im starting to worry im adopted lol

@marmite2025 yes you definitely have beautiful green eyes!

RossGellersCat · 23/07/2025 22:57

Just to reassure you I have blue eyes, my DH has brown and our DD's eyes started as bluey but are definitely turning green. (And she is most definitely DH's!!) 😂

It's possible for two brown-eyed parents to have a blue-eyed child if both parents carry the recessive blue-eyed gene. Similarly, two blue-eyed parents can have a brown-eyed child if they both carry a hidden dominant brown-eyed gene.
It is true that many believe 2 brown eyed parents can't have a blue eyed kid-even in novels, this was a "clue"-but actually it's not the case, My eye colour is unusual I used an app as people always argued whether my eyes were blue/green/grey. Maybe try that (can't remember which I used, but there must be a few), for a bit of fun, if you want a description of your eye colour.

I have brown eyes, both my parents have blue or get grey eyes. I was a bit shocked in biology class in school! But I am the very image of my father, and also very like my cousins. So now understand that it's more complex that the simple explanations you can get in school.

Sort of. Eye colour basically comes down to how much melanin is in the iris. It most commonly presents in blues and browns. Brown eyes have the most, grey eyes have next to none.
The hue, which creates hazel and green and grey and amber colours in the iris comes from other substances in the eye. Grey eyes for instance have higher levels of collagen in the stroma.

One of the main ways to separate blue eyes from grey eyes is that blue eyes tend to be paler at the outer edge and darker/more vibrant towards the pupil. Grey eyes are darker at the edges and lighter/more desaturated closer to the pupil.

Ah thanks. Glad I was sort of right!

Definitely blue-grey on that photo @ChirpyCyanFawn

PoxyAndIKnowIt · 23/07/2025 23:03

Yes, it’s not that simple. DH and I both have green eyes: his pale green, mine more hazel. One of our children has brown eyes, which is not possible according to GCSE Biology (or ‘O’ Grade, as we did in Scotland in the 80’s!)

Theyreeatingthedogs · 23/07/2025 23:04

Grey

CherryPinkAppleBlossomWhite · 23/07/2025 23:05

Your eyes are blue-grey

Squidgemoon · 23/07/2025 23:31

I have green/grey eyes, with a blue eyed father and brown/hazel mother. Definitely possible, but I would say yours are more blue/grey OP. Hard to tell from one photo though, my eyes often look different colours in photos depending on the lighting.

YourDandyPlumBeaker · 23/07/2025 23:43

I see grey, green and blue in your eye.

Luna69 · 23/07/2025 23:44

Grey

MissSookieStackhouse · 23/07/2025 23:48

I’d say your eyes are blue / grey rather than green. I’ve got brown eyes and my ex has blue eyes and our DS has blue / grey eyes, so perfectly possible. That’s the wonder of genetics!

girljulian · 23/07/2025 23:52

Grey! Beautiful.

both my parents have green eyes and so do my sibling and I. But all different greens.

ChirpyCyanFawn · 23/07/2025 23:59

Thank you so much for your replies everyone. I’ve found this very informative! Genetics are obviously way more complicated than I thought also I had never really thought about the fact my eyes are grey until now lol!

Bluey grey

PancakePatty · 24/07/2025 00:06

I have brown eyes, husband has green eyes, our child has blue eyes. Childs eyes were a really vivid almost violet blue when he was tiny, he’s now a toddler and the colour has softened but still very blue.
People often comment that child has my eyes but they are a completely different colour, just the same shape (I have quite big eyes)

HoppingPavlova · 24/07/2025 00:09

I have blue eyes and all my direct relatives, at least until my great grandparents had blue eyes. DH has blue eyes and all of his direct relatives, at least until his great grandparents had blue eyes. All of our kids have blue eyes except one who has brown eyes. I did not have an affair, no IVF and they are definitely biologically ours (no hospital baby mix up). They are the only person in either family to have brown eyes for 5 generations. If I had a dollar for every time they were asked ‘so, where DID your eyes come from’, I’d be extremely wealthy.

LadyGAgain · 24/07/2025 00:21

Your eyes look beautiful. Blue. And beautiful.

Helianthusinbloom · 24/07/2025 10:05

Wouldn’t worry. Mine are brown, ex has grey/blue. DC1 has brown, DC2 has green. Parentage not in question at all.

JustMarriedBecca · 24/07/2025 10:08

My DD has grey green eyes.

I have brown. DH has blue.

Brown is dominant. I have one brown, one green gene. I have passed down the green to DD.

DH has one blue one green, he has passed down the Green

We have a DD with green eyes.

My son has my green gene and my husband's blue. His eyes are blue but he carries a green gene.

I think. Roughly speaking.

Edited to say neither child looks like me. Both are blonde and I have black hair. It's very alarming. They both have my temper though so...hooray.

Everydayimhuffling · 24/07/2025 10:11

DS has blue eyes which come from his grandparents, and blonde hair like my brother. HP and I have hazel or green eyes respectively. DD has hazel eyes and brown hair, so DS always looks like the odd one out! Eye colour is more complicated than most people learn at school.

Cece92 · 24/07/2025 10:14

Your eyes are blue/grey very similar to my sister. My dad has the same eye colour and my mum has hazel colour eyes and I dark brown eyes. Me and my ex have dark brown eyes our daughter has extremely dark brown almost black eyes xxx
