New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting. There are currently 10 items on The Observer website The real Salt Path | The Observer

To all - No saltiness. Keep to the path. Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Please do not engage with visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for nine very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in a healthy and civil fashion is very welcome.

Keep calm and eat fudge.

Thank you

I remember when I was young and being upset that For Those I Loved and Go Ask Alice were found to be based on lies. I think we can believe what we want to hear and read. Martin Gray who wrote in For Those I Loved that he'd been in Treblinka concentration camp and escaped, later admitted that he hadn't but that it didn't matter because others had. But that's taking away the stories from those who did go through that horror. Geeta Sereny was one of those who questioned Gray's story but Max Gallo, ghostwriter, said he'd written that part of the book. There were so many accusations and counter-accusations that it was hard to know the truth but a film was made from the book.

Go Ask Alice by Anonymous was supposed to be the harrowing diaries of a teenage girl who got into drugs and prostitution and died. Turns out it was a middle aged Mormon woman who'd written it and pretended it was a real diary. Shed always wanted to be a writer.

I love Craig Brown. My copy of PE arrived yesterday and I was hoping they would do more on TSP. As well as that v v funny diary, they've also covered it in their 'Books & Bookmen' column, though reporting on the coverage of the scandal rather than adding any more information.

I did laugh too at the Tattle post. 'Indignant Frother' is going to have to be my next username. I was quite surprised that they didn't have a thread on SW anyway, because it's the sort of grift they do v well at exposing. Their 'Bloggers' section is particularly good at uncovering dodgy stories such as Jack Monroe, Jimmy the Depher Plumber, Simon Harris (Man Behaving Dadly) and others. Anyway, what amused me the most was the irony of commenting on how we'd reached 6 threads when they're currently on thread 614 about Jack Monroe......

Please keep your current username for as long as you can! If it weren’t for that, I might never have come across Dorothy Parker’s brilliant book review! And I wonder if some of those Tattlers are just jealous they didn’t spot the TSP inconsistencies first? I usually find TL over-the-top and often quite nasty, but their detective work is impressive and their thread titles are often quite funny 😂

I obviously do need to introduce a Thread Frothometer Monitor.

Try repeating that quickly, especially after joining in with the drinking game.

Thinking further about it, as a responsible OP I should really introduce some kind of warning system to assist our commenting critics, like the weather or shipping forecast maybe, or the tide tables or Richter Scale.

Competitively Indignant Froth: High tide
Self-Righteous Indignation: 7.9
Whipping Up: Strong south-westerly
Witches Hunted: 5
Ridiculousness: Storm force
Obsessive Crawling * (sic): Hurricane level

oh, g'wan, then, @Fandango52, in the light of your Dorothy Parker admission, I'll keep the current moniker just for you 😘The more people who get to read her, the better <gavel>

And excellent work on the Thread Scale, @DisappointedReader . We could play Top Trumps with the scoring. A new game for the Board Games Correspondent!

Reminds of the advert for one of the strangely coloured tooth rotting fizzy drinks (like Tizer) I remember from my childhood in the 1970s, called Cresta. "Its frothy man". I shudder to think what the ingredients were!

And no, I haven't paid out any money to get this info, despite what someone on Reddit may type/believe!

That was a complaint from a MN poster on another thread, posting unhappily about her brief time on these threads. I think she was referring to one of our correspondents. Her first 3 posts on our first thread just seemed like normal discussion and I thanked her. Her negative comments about posters started in her 4th post and then her 5th and seemingly final post was a long salty one on our second thread. My reading of the situation is that 'I was not welcome' actually should be 'a small number of posters disagreed with my opinion'. A shame she held onto it and felt the need to comment so critically elsewhere. By that point we had all moved on all the way to thread 7. Oh well, you can't win 'em all. As most people hopefully realise, I don't want anyone to feel unwelcome, apart from the trolls. I think most posters on these threads feel the same.

Once in a House on Fire by Andrea Ashworth
Hardly anyone seems to have heard about this book but it was a game-changer for me in supporting people I knew. I always recommend it, although with a warning that it is not for the faint-hearted.

To me, two well-written 'overcoming difficulties' books are Once in a House on Fire by Andrea Ashworth - an abusive childhood, and Bad Blood by Lorna Sage - an unusual background

Yes, I mean, isn’t Tattle, as I understand it, mostly full of people sleuthing and frothing about influencers ‘misrepresenting’ their lives? So, exactly like this thread, but with no requirement to read books?

Pretty much, yes. Tattle threads have as much if not more information as has been shared on here. For example the Ioan Gruffudd/Alice Evans threads have actual court documents posted to prove points. I don't tend to look at the influencer threads because I have no idea who the people are, but Tattlers are pretty determined about what they term 'receipts'. They have thread 'wikis' where a running history/summary is kept for newcomers' information. All v useful, tbh!

It does happen.

There were things in the books that would have just killed him. So no, I doubt they happened quite as he told it because he'd be guaranteed to be dead.

I was just going to mention the Gruffudd/Evans court documents! Those threads are educational, witty, exceptionally well organised, and the underlying psychology/legal/social systems being examined are fascinating. I'm late to following along, mind, and it's the only corner I've visited. I'm not sure how anyone actually joins Tattle, tbh, it seems to have been invitation-only for the past year at least. It's got to the point where I go to comment, then remember that I can't 😆.

Wave walker - Suzanne Heyward. Think she did a Mumsnet Q&A. Another memoir where other family members apparently had a different view.

Oh yes, I remember reading about her. The boat trip sounds fascinating, but quite stressful too.

Yes, that is interesting. What I remember is how much she felt that her mum just wanted to do everything to fulfil what her dad wanted, regardless of the children.

yes, a lot of Tattle threads are like that IMO. Have a look at the Bloggers section and the threads about Jimmy the Plumber, Liz Fraser and Simon Harris are similar. I'm not a member btw as like you, registration for new bods closed some while back and hasn't reopened as far as I can see.

I was musing about other faked memoirs that I've read but loved. Has anyone else ever read 'The Long Walk' by Slawomir Rawicz, about an alleged escape from a Soviet prison camp & walk to India? Or 'The Third Eye' by Lobsang Rampa, about a Tibetan lama? My parents had both of these and I read them as a teenager and thought they were great. I discovered later on that there's doubt cast on whether Rawicz' story happened or whether he lifted it from someone else, and Lobsang Rampa was in fact a plumber's son from Devon called Cyril Hoskin. Fascinating stuff.

Ellmau · 24/07/2025 20:57

I had a uni job serving in a restaurant and didn't know how to use the coffee machine. I attempted to froth a cappuccino for some painful amount of time. Afterwards my manager came up and said crossly: "I've watched you trying to do that for 3 minutes." It always baffled me why he didn't come up and give some on the spot training, instead of managing in a strictly observatory capacity

Maybe he didn't know how it worked either :)

Hi thanks, I stand corrected. This is the good side - we are all learning many things. It is very detailed - I think the guide book must be good, to be fair she does constantly mention Paddy.

I think out of interest I may sit with my copy of TSP and the OS map and trace their journey. Just for fun!

I haven’t read either, but have seen The Way Back, which I think is adapted from The Long Walk. It’s a good film, but very melodramatic. I was very impressed by it at the time, as I thought it was based on a true story.

Yes you inspired me to go and get my Clovelly OS map out of the understairs cupboard (I wasn't needing to hide in there!). The Land's End map is a bit of a swizz - so much sea (even though the Scilly Isles are bunged in)!
