New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting. There are currently 10 items on The Observer website The real Salt Path | The Observer

To all - No saltiness. Keep to the path. Please be extremely cautious when it comes to naming or implicating people and addresses not in the public eye or with no direct connection to the story, and around the understandable health speculations, especially where details are unclear or still emerging. Please do not engage with visitors who seem to have their own agenda and seek to derail. Avoid @'ing and quoting them as - from experience - this will only encourage them back to the threads. We have done amazingly well together for nine very interesting, very serious and very silly threads so far. I can't be here as much as I'd like so all help with keeping our discussion walking along in a healthy and civil fashion is very welcome.

Keep calm and eat fudge.

Thank you

Why the long face? What you need in your life is a life sized cut out of Simon Armitage and plenty of fudge.

How much did it cost, if you don’t mind me asking? I was trying to see as there seemed to be a digital ticket option too - can one join by zoom?

I just booked a digital ticket, it is free and via Zoom.

For those looking for a field trip there is an event at Tortoise’s offices in London on Monday where Chloe and a colleague will ‘lift the lid on how we got to the bottom of the story that shook the literary world.’
https://observer.co.uk/our-events/uncovering-the-salt-path

This is also on Zoom, and I've booked to attend it remotely. 😎

There's a certain irony to that poster talking about being self righteous.

MarmiteWine · 24/07/2025 00:34

Now then, if we're bringing Richard Armitage along I'm more than happy to split my role between RA correspondent and Legacy Media correspondent. In fact, it seems only fair that I devote a little time to researching Legacy Richard Armitage...

Good morning! No further pedantry to report, nor vanishing paragraphs. But no vanishing paragraphs have been rediscovered. Like Atlantis, they remain lost to all but those in whose memories they live on…

Although I have received confirmation that the copy I sold was a first edition run, published in 2018. So I suspect that the bit of the book saying ‘real name Ray’ was removed for subsequent runs. That doesn’t, of course, explain why his wife would report MothTimRay’s name wrongly in a book she wrote for him, so I would like this to be added to our list of mysteries and inconsistencies.

Btw was wondering how many actual SW locals she met on the path. Most people who live by me are incomers with a heavy bias towards midlanders so I’d have thought the accents would have been very familiar to RayMoth.

I'd have loved to but we're travelling back from a festival on Monday so I think it'd be too much unfortunately.

Maybe that explains the shock of meeting a local with a Welsh accent ....in Wales!

What is the current record for posts and threads on an MN topic by the way?

After 20 years of living in Wales 😂 Must have been a shock!

TheBrandyPath · 24/07/2025 08:08

@WorthySloth I have now seen quite a bit of the 'second' book (in my opinion). I was shocked at the SWCP association using an extract where someone is described as wearing a sailing jacket, Quite unusual in Lynton, unless you're particularly indomitable, but good sense when "the rain came, light and mixed with sand at first, then furious, horizontal shards, thundering against waterproofs, painful on exposed skin", I would have thought.

The outright condemnation of people doing their jobs (and wanting to be paid) stands out for me. Some of these jobs are very seasonal and there is no empathy shown....

Came across an interview from Sept 2020 with a Scottish journalist which says:

Winn is already planning a third book and another walk is in the pipeline. "It is one we are doing next year. Who knows. I might bump into you as I'm passing" Could a visit to Scotland be on the cards, then. "Might be" she teases.

This seems to contradict the narrative in LL (Moth falling down in the orchard in Jan 2021) where she picks up a guide to the CWT and spontaneously suggests to Moth that they walk the 230 mile trail. Maybe also casts doubt on the spontaneity of the decision to walk the SWCP after seeing a copy of 500 Mile Walkies in the packing case?

Oh, as well as being the medical correspondent (worthy, but just a teeny bit full), can I also be the Pennine Way correspondent? I know it's not the Salt Path but it is a long distance trail so there must be crossover knowledge to be shared. And I know, in my heart of hearts, that I haven't actually done the whole Pennine way but I live not too far from Edale and I've done some sections, so surely that's enough to weave a more nearly complete version?

mauvishagain · 24/07/2025 08:30

Failing that, can I join the posse of Observer talk correspondents? I've booked a ticket! #mauvishagaindefinitelyneedstogetalife

Well, I’m revising a book and project-managing a house renovation, as well as parenting a teenager, and all the usual life stuff. I can assure you that commenting on an internet thread doesn’t in fact take up as much time as you appear to think, but thank you for the concern.😀

I also love the martyred "I was not welcome" at the end of that message.

Firstly, it's an open forum. Anyone can jump on and post.

Secondly the OP has made it clear that everyone is welcome so long as they are respectful of the other posters, the thread stays mostly good natured and we all worship at the alter of Simon Armitage and Fudge bars.

Simples.

Well Raymoth did also walk the Pennine Way, as described in LL (not read it), so I'd think your knowledge would be invaluable to plug that gap. I've done the Cape Wrath Trail, West Highland Way and Glasgow to Edinburgh sections.

Good find. Another example of her reshaping/reimagining life events to fit a narrative arc. Does LL explain where the CWT book appears from or is it simply on their book shelf?

I did wonder a day or two ago why they picked the SWCP when the Wales Coastal Path was opened in May 2012 and was on their repossessed doorstep. I'd have thought the symbolism and personal meaning of doing that would have been much more powerful. But maybe it didn't cross their minds or somehow didn't know it was a thing.
