Mug Ownership Vs Mug Usage

JuvenileBigfoot · 23/07/2025 18:16

Inspired by the Muggy Dad thread, I've realised that DP and I have a cupboard full of mugs but only use 6.

He has one for coffee and one for other hot drinks.
I have a Big Tea one and a Small Tea one.
Then we have 2 Christmas ones for December only.

And yet, we have stood many mugs.

Is this just us or it this a thing?

I live alone and somehow have about 12 or 13 mugs. I use 2.

Happyher · 23/07/2025 18:19

Same here though my son can use 6 in a day.

tinyspiny · 23/07/2025 18:20

I think it’s pretty normal , we have. 2 mug cupboards and one of them never gets opened and we use the same 4/6 everyday .

Can he not re-use his mug?

That would drive me bonkers to see.

I wonder if ownership of multiple mugs is a relatively recent thing. In a Sue Townsend book from the 80s, a character's poverty is illustrated by the fact she didn't have enough mugs for house visitors so had to use a damaged one herself. Yet nowadays, I have seen mugs actually being given away free in charity shops and certainly you can buy used ones for pence. It's interesting. We have a cupboard full and rotate which ones we use.

Snorlaxo · 23/07/2025 18:21

Yes. We all have “our” mugs and mugs that are only offered to visitors.

Ha, I lived alone before I lived with him and had loads!

I have about 60 mugs. Not sure of the exact quantity because I never have them all out at the same time to reliably count. About 10 of them are Christmas themed.

Use them all in turn, seasonally.

Amongst the ones we have out at any one time I usually end up with one or two most favourite ones, and one or two become mainly for DH's use, but I will mix it up.

JuvenileBigfoot · 23/07/2025 18:24

The next question is...why don't we get rid of the surplus mugs! Nothing is stopping me, but I can't quite bring myself to do it!

Yes he could but I have a dishwasher so I don’t mind - I use 3 but I switch between coffee and various teas. The dishwasher is small and goes on every night so no point washing individually

HoneyHoneyHowYouThrillMe · 23/07/2025 18:30

I only keep mugs I absolutely love. Except one because it's perfect for sipping on broth/soup, so I suppose I do at least appreciate it.

GrandHighPoohbah · 23/07/2025 18:31

I am loving all these spin - off mug threads! Mugs are in fact a cause of marital tension in our house 😂. DH refuses to ever get rid of any and still drinks from chipped old manky vessels from 20 years ago. I on the other hand, have a separate cupboard for my nice ones!

Frogs88 · 23/07/2025 18:49

I have 6 mugs and all of them get used pretty much everyday. I did have more, but haven’t replaced them yet. I also only currently own 1 bowl if that gives you an idea of how frequently they get dropped/broken in my house versus how often I remember to buy more…

Gowlett · 23/07/2025 18:56

We have many mugs, but only use our faves.
I like China mugs for my tea. DH drinks coffee.

We recycle the mug once it’s out, for each cuppa.
Though DH is lazy, using it again the next day…

AgnesX · 23/07/2025 19:02

Currently there are 2 of us and something like 20 mugs. China mugs for our afternoon tea, hug type mugs for coffee, Christmas mugs, mugs with initials on, and mugs that need hand washing. And a couple of cups and saucers for some reason 😳

You can never have too many mugs!

B1anche · 23/07/2025 19:05

I just have my fave mug, which is the only one I will drink out of. OH has about 4 that he uses because he can't be arsed to rinse/wash them. DS has one that he uses. I also have a mug that I've had since I was 5 (now in late 40s) that everyone is forbidden to use. And then there are about 7 or 8 visitor mugs.

In the garage, is a box with about 30 or 40 of OH's mugs which he has accumulated over the years and refuses to get rid of 🙄(some from gigs, various 'favourite uncle' etc ones).

HonoriaBulstrode · 23/07/2025 19:16

I have twelve which are out on the worktop and others away in a cupboard never used. And others around the house with pens and pencils in.

My local kitchen shop used to have a basket outside with mugs in. I had to force myself to walk past without looking in the end, or I'd have a lot more than twelve.

I have one I always use for breakfast. Four are a seasonal set, so I use whichever is appropriate for the season. How frequently the others get used depends on how frequently I do the washing up.

Edit: and I think it's quite reasonable for people in a household to have their favourites, which as a matter of courtesy other people don't use.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 23/07/2025 19:22

I have weekday and weekend mugs. And a giant one for big cups of tea after winter running.
They are all quite old though, mostly over 20yrs.

Standardpain · 23/07/2025 19:24

I' ve got loads of mugs and I never use them - I just use my big china breakfast cup and saucer all the time.
I used to have double the amount of mugs I have now but when I moved house in 2016 I steeled myself and sent a lot to the charity shop.
The ones I have left have sentimental meaning for me and I can't see me getting rid of them despite them taking up a lot of cupboard space . Plus there are other ones hanging from hooks on the wall.
So I sympathise with you wanting to keep your mugs.

Toddlerteaplease · 23/07/2025 19:38

I live alone and have about 15 mugs. I use four of them regularly!

exhaustedbeinghappy · 23/07/2025 19:55

We have far too many. Many cunning plan to whittle the numbers down was sending DS off to uni with about 4 - assuming he’d break or lose them and need more the next year. Yr 1 he brought them all back, and after yr 2 he brought ann extra 2 home as he’d been bought some funny ones as gifts!

When he goes back I’m going to have to have a cull!

DonewhatIcando · 23/07/2025 20:02

@JuvenileBigfootLove this thread, I read out the muggy dad thread to DP, we were howling because we have our own mugs and our own seats 😂
I have a morning coffee mug, small enough so I won't need a wee on the way to work, a big mug for after work coffee cos I need a big one after a shit day.
I have a bone china tea cup for my 9pm cuppa tea before I go to bed.
Sometimes DP forgets to use my 9pm tea cup so has to go back to the kitchen to make another one, I can't drink the first one, in the wrong mug cos it's now tainted.😂😂

LemondrizzleShark · 23/07/2025 20:04

I have 8, and only generally use 3-4 of them (I rotate depending on what it is in the dishwasher.

BUT I have had friends round for coffee and have run out of mugs. So however many you have, it does need to be more than 8.

I have dozens of disney mugs. Some "posh mugs", few bone china tea cups.

I use the same one mugs with my DNs picture, and a glass mug for hot chocolate. And v.v.v.occasionally if i have guests I use 2 of the 6 posh mugs 🤣

Ha ha, you should nip that shit in the bud by hiding the extras 🤣 unless people are visiting
