Mug Ownership Vs Mug Usage

Inspired by the Muggy Dad thread, I've realised that DP and I have a cupboard full of mugs but only use 6.

He has one for coffee and one for other hot drinks.
I have a Big Tea one and a Small Tea one.
Then we have 2 Christmas ones for December only.

And yet, we have stood many mugs.

Is this just us or it this a thing?

I just have my fave mug, which is the only one I will drink out of. OH has about 4 that he uses because he can't be arsed to rinse/wash them. DS has one that he uses. I also have a mug that I've had since I was 5 (now in late 40s) that everyone is forbidden to use. And then there are about 7 or 8 visitor mugs.

In the garage, is a box with about 30 or 40 of OH's mugs which he has accumulated over the years and refuses to get rid of 🙄(some from gigs, various 'favourite uncle' etc ones).

Have a garage tidy up and “accidentally” (ahem) drop the box …

We've put some in the loft. Ones that mean something to us but we don't use. Only ones we drink out of are allowed in the cupboard for use. If someone buys us a mug we don't like it gets taken to a charity shop.
One in one out as well.

I have about 6 normal mugs and one huge one for bovril. DH keeps buying himself posh glazed ones from an online potter. He did get me a Keith Brynner Jones feminista one, and then dropped it. I take all the odds and sods that build up from holidays etc, into work as the mugs always get nicked. (Guess where I work?). I have decided that I/we need a proper set of mat hinges mugs now, like le creuset or Denby. And the. I can have a cull. Oh and ds likes the funny shaped ones like a fox and a shark.

I occassionally take surplus mugs to work and stick them in the staff room cupboards.

My partner and I recently cleared out his deceased parents' house and I relocated mugs to work with Jennifer, Kyle and Martin on them but we have no staff members with those names.

trainedopossum · 23/07/2025 20:17

We had a clearout and a bunch (mostly gifts) went to the charity shop. I only use one kind (there are two of those) unless I’m having herbal tea. DH likes a china mug so he has a few of those and if one breaks he gets another for a Christmas/birthday gift.

Mudflaps · 23/07/2025 20:24

We've a very varied collection of mugs but only use about 4 of them. I've a favourite and so does dh but I've also got a large disney mug that I use when home alone for a very big cup of tea, its a quality mug and the tea stays hot for longer than the others, its nicely decorated but also suitable for me (a citòg) unlike a lot which annoys me. Dh has mugs from old suppliers, businesses, etc which I don't like but accept. He also has a collection from a yearly motorsport event he competes in, the year is on the mug and his collection starts in the 90's, its interesting to see how the quality of the mugs have decreased over the years from a beautiful handmade pottery mug to a bog standard printed mug that you'd get from a cheap website (these are never used, occasionally dusted and photographed but never used). I also have some from the Christmas markets in Cologne and store hobby supplies in them.

We have a matching set of mugs in different colours but I always try and use my favourite colour. Isn’t the end of the world if it isn’t available though! My best friend has her own mug here and I have my own mug at her house. Our husbands don’t get it!

Tangerinenets · 23/07/2025 20:27

Well my mum is a potter so I have about 30 beautiful mugs. I raid her workshop on a regular basis and stick post its on the ones I want . I’m starting to run out of cupboard space. I use them all but everyone else has to use regular mugs 😂

Crazymayfly · 23/07/2025 20:37

I love mugs! I have our day to day le creuset - saved for a long time before getting those from outlet in fave colours. They’re for day to day, then have a special hand made danish mug which I use for caramel lattes only. Used when I wfh. Then I have a weekend mug which my dog bought me. Then we have special Christmas mugs which are only for mulled wine. I have mugs for using when I’m in the garden (so the other don’t get chipped). I also have a special autumn pumpkin mug for pumpkin spice lattes only.

I thought I was normal but typing this I realise I have a problem as am also looking for Easter mugs for next year.

Crazymayfly · 23/07/2025 20:47

See - now I feel I’m missing out. I need a hot chocolate mug (will need to get a pair so have one for myself and H) and I FEEL like I REALLY now must have a large vessel for supping broth soup or bovril after a cold damp walk with the dog.

I shall go and peruse some websites…..

Octavia64 · 23/07/2025 20:49

I collect the Starbucks ones for places I have been.

so I have quite a few. Plus thermal insulated ones for winter and six special Christmas ones.

oh, and the pumpkin one for Halloween.

I love me a tacky mug

TerrierCollector · 23/07/2025 20:51

I have a cupboard full of mugs (probably about 20) but I rarely use them at all. I don’t really do hot drinks, apart from a matcha in the morning which I have in a fancy hot chocolate glass thingy.m, or if I’m going donut my reusable coffee cup. Pretty wasteful really!

BeeCucumber · 23/07/2025 20:53

We have different mugs for everyday of the week. We have Saturday mugs and Sunday mugs. We had work mugs when we WFH. We have mugs for when we are on leave and for Bank Holidays. We have garden and patio mugs. We have mugs for Valentines Day, Easter and Christmas.

LlynTegid · 23/07/2025 20:54

Only about three or four regularly used in my house.

RandomUsernameHere · 23/07/2025 21:08

We’ve probably got around 30, nearly all of them were gifts. They do come in useful, for example we’re having work done on our house at the moment so a lot more of them are getting used.

cimena · 23/07/2025 21:51

We have six mugs. Moved house two years ago and there is a box in the loft with the other 12 or so in it that just never got unpacked.

it turns out we don’t really need more than six mugs. Four ‘normal’ ones that are all the same. Then two massive ones. I don’t bother with those.

I used to have a favourite mug but having four that are equal favourites is very peaceful, there’s always one there.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 23/07/2025 21:55

I am a single parent in possession of a large number of mugs. I use most of them fairly frequently but there are some I would never reach for for myself - very plain ordinary ones.

There are a couple only I use due to being a gift for DC, and a couple each of the DC only use (16 and 11) which are either gifts or “made” at school. DD has one that says “book person” that was a gift and I would never touch. DS has the ones they get with their own design on at Christmas from school.

Mugs are a very important and personal thing I think!

I said on the muggy Dad thread that my Dad has morning mugs, teatime mugs etc - which sounds ridiculous but he is kind of right - some mugs do have a morning or an afternoon aura!

I have twelve which are out on the worktop and others away in a cupboard never used. And others around the house with pens and pencils in.

My local kitchen shop used to have a basket outside with mugs in. I had to force myself to walk past without looking in the end, or I'd have a lot more than twelve.

I have one I always use for breakfast. Four are a seasonal set, so I use whichever is appropriate for the season. How frequently the others get used depends on how frequently I do the washing up.

Edit: and I think it's quite reasonable for people in a household to have their favourites, which as a matter of courtesy other people don't use.

Edited

I agree. I wouldn't use DPs faves and he wouldn't use mine.

However, I'm not sure how much of that is courtesy and how much is that each others mugs are "wrong"

It's a whole minefield of mug lore.

Cups breed in the cupboard, doesn't everyone know that?
Or its just all the freebies that get sent when you spend over a certain amount with tea/coffee purchases or from companies who drop them in with their catalogues!

We each have our favourites. I have inside and outside cups (ones I dont mind if they get dropped or left to fester in the garage, which then get binned). Our friends even have their 'own' cups when they come round.

Same in the work office i cleared lots of ugly ones, new ones are made up of freebies from companies we have accounts with. Again we all have our own, mine was a gift from a customer and I love it because its bucket size!
