Should pass the parcel be rigged in favour of the birthday child?

Just that really!

YABU - no it shouldn’t be rigged, just random allocation who wins
YANBU - yes it should be rigged so the birthday child wins the main prize

Another vote for Lucky’s Dad’s rules. It’s the only way

medianewbie · 22/07/2025 17:57

I used to do a small something in each layer & rigged so each child got one. Final layer was a few of the same kind of thing ie no 'big prize'. Saves tears.

Rentitis · 22/07/2025 17:59

Only if the birthday child is Pip’s Rosie from the Archers.

You're raising a nation of squibs!

Not me…nieces 3rd birthday several years ago! Seems pretty well balanced despite winning a Fredo chocolate bar 14 years ago.

windyfarmers · 22/07/2025 18:02

I always used to rig it so every child got to open a layer, then I turned away and made it random. If the final layer landed on the birthday child I say we had to go again as they had enough presents already.

CasperGutman · 22/07/2025 18:04

I chose YABU/random allocation as the least bad option, but we always rig it against the birthday child here. The main prize is won by an outside invited guest who I think will enjoy the prize (or who hasn't been having the best time and needs cheering up!).

Should be rigged so birthday child doesn't win and everyone has at least one go.

Exactly this

No

caringcarer · 22/07/2025 18:10

I rigged it so each DC opened one layer and got a lollypop then any other child but birthday child who already has birthday gifts got the main gift. I thought most people did this.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 22/07/2025 18:10

Don’t be ridiculous! Of course the ‘birthday child’ shouldn’t win ffs!!

One of the best pieces of advice I've received from mumsnet is to let the the birthday child stop the music (without looking) for the final go. Then they can't win! You do need to make sure you can identify when it's time for the prize with some different wrapping paper.

Good idea.

StMarie4me · 22/07/2025 18:15

No. Rigged to ensure that every child opens a layer, with a sweetie or something in it, then the big prize is random with the music meister not looking at all.

You're raising a nation of squibs!

My favourite bit is when he panics at the first go and ends up handing out 5 dollar bills to each child. 😂😂

I always think that has inverse Oprah vibes - You get a car! You get a car! But with panic instead of joy 😂

Should be rigged so birthday child doesn't win and everyone has at least one go.

This has always been my understanding too.

Ohdear1975 · 22/07/2025 19:00

Just, NO

HornyHornersPinger · 22/07/2025 19:01

Hell no, if anything - the opposite! We expressly told our then 5yo that she wouldn't been winning any of the games at her upcoming party, her friends would be winning the little prizes while she has the mountains of gifts. Then explained how it was the same for other bday children at their parties.

Laura95167 · 22/07/2025 22:03

Id rig it so birthday child DIDNT win

Bournetilly · 22/07/2025 22:05

Agreed the birthday child shouldn’t win the main prize, they already have gifts to open.

I put a little something in each layer though and make sure they open one of them.

Dotty1000 · 22/07/2025 22:07

Birthday child doesn’t win and rigged so every child gets a go

Lyocell · 22/07/2025 22:12

Eurgh I just feel I need a vent here - went to a birthday party last week and they had 2 rounds of pass the parcel with multiple layers of sweets. Approx 10 children in a circle and probably about 20 layers between 2 presents with 2 main prizes.

They kept deliberately stopping on a handful of children! The same 4-5 kids won the whole lot, whilst the other half got absolutely nothing. was definitely deliberate as I was watching the adults do it. DD is only 4 and she handled it as well as she could but obviously there were tears.

just don’t bloody play it at all if you’re going to do that! Baffling.

Poor Bingo!

Harassedmum123 · 23/07/2025 11:13

No, if anything it should be rigged so that the birthday child doesn’t win. Once went to a children’s party where the birthday child won every game and myself and friends have never forgotten!

RaraRachael · 23/07/2025 11:28

Scottish pass the parcel is different. When the music stops whoever is holding the parcel leaves the circle and gets a sweet. Last one left gets the parcel.
I was totally flummoxed when I moved to England and was asked how many layers to have in the parcel 😅
Whichever version, birthday child wouldn't win.
