Should pass the parcel be rigged in favour of the birthday child?

Just that really!

YABU - no it shouldn’t be rigged, just random allocation who wins
YANBU - yes it should be rigged so the birthday child wins the main prize

A gift in each layer…every child gets something. There wasn’t a ‘main’ prize as such, all small
gifts of equal value.

EdisinBurgh · 22/07/2025 17:25

Birthday child does not win any prizes at their party games.

The birthday child and all others get a sweet from between the layers. The winner should be fairly random (although no child should win two games at the same party).

Child should be prepared in advance for this happening, learn that it’s a nice thing to do as “host” and keep being reminded of their big pile of birthday presents. It’s an important teaching moment for life.

Rigged against birthday child.

Should be rigged so birthday child doesn't win and everyone has at least one go.

This. The birthday child already will have received presents and had a lot of attention (as they should)

ACynicalDad · 22/07/2025 17:31

If the birthday child gets it all adults present know it was rigged and think worse of you. And they’ve had loads that day anyway.

Rigged against the birthday child.

One year the song ended when my birthday child was holding the parcel, and we did let him keep it. But it was an accident.

Yep

menopausalmare · 22/07/2025 17:34

No. Rig it so everyone gets a layer but the centre prize should be 'blind'.

Moveoverdarlin · 22/07/2025 17:35

I don’t agree with either option. It should be rigged so every child opens a layer and gets a sweet and it also needs to be rigged so the birthday child doesn’t get the prize at the end.

Icanttakethisanymore · 22/07/2025 17:36

id just put a sweet in every layer and have no ‘main prize’.

WhatMe123 · 22/07/2025 17:36

No never and I hate it when it is tbh 😩 all should get a turn and a random kid should get the last prize

Vivienne1000 · 22/07/2025 17:38

When we did Pass the Parcel, every layer had a little prize, with a forfeit. Then the middle prize was slightly better. All prizes went straight into their named party bag. Each game was rigged, so every child ended up with the same amount of gifts, which made up really cute party bags. Add some cake and cookies and you have the happiest children and the best party bags ever!

You're raising a nation of squibs!

3rdtimeinflorida · 22/07/2025 17:40

Won’t the birthday child be getting enough treats/presents??. YADBU

autienotnaughty · 22/07/2025 17:41

Everyone gets a little prize. Random child gets gift.

PestoHoliday · 22/07/2025 17:43

The birthday child should NOT get the central prize because they are already getting many gifts already.

ZoraBennett · 22/07/2025 17:43

One of the best pieces of advice I've received from mumsnet is to let the the birthday child stop the music (without looking) for the final go. Then they can't win! You do need to make sure you can identify when it's time for the prize with some different wrapping paper.

DiscoBob · 22/07/2025 17:43

No! If anything it should be rigged AGAINST the birthday kid who's already getting loads of gifts.

The game prizes are part of saying thank you to the guests for coming and bringing a gift.

ShortColdandGrey · 22/07/2025 17:45

No, it should be rigged so one of their friends get the prize.

aCatCalledFawkes · 22/07/2025 17:46

No. Birthday child has enough presents and should be the last child to win.

Hummusanddipdip · 22/07/2025 17:47

Rigged so that any child BUT the birthday child wins.

Another that has something in each layer, we've done sweets and challenges the past few years, thats been fun and the children seem to have enjoyed winning either a sweet or a challenge on their turn.

Ecclessnake · 22/07/2025 17:47

We always did it so there was a little prize in each layer, stickers etc for each child, then the main prize was loads of sweets and chocs that landed on the birthday child who opened it with much aplomb all into the centre for everyone to grab! Chaos but fun!

PurpleChrayn · 22/07/2025 17:48

I always rig it so the birthday child DOESN’T win.

RainbowSlimeLab · 22/07/2025 17:49

I was at a party where the birthday girl
deliberately won. I was horrified. I was also at one where the birthday child refused to join in the games as he knew he wouldn’t win.
