Give up then, come back and tell us how that works out. That's it, that's the answer

FranzXaverSuss · 22/07/2025 15:08

Don’t then.

Oooh … shall we play ‘guess what OPs job is?’

I hear you and #samesies but just have to keep plodding (or try and find something else)

NotrialNodeal · 22/07/2025 15:12

I was walking into work Saturday morning and it dawned on me there's at least 30 years of work ahead of me before I can retire and even then that's optimistic 🙃

Eughhhhhh. I hate it too. Solidarity.

PruthePrune · 22/07/2025 15:14

So do I. I'm 57 now so theoretically have another 10 years to go and can't bloody wait. I do feel as if I'm wishing my life away though.

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 22/07/2025 15:14

I never particularly liked working, either. However, I really didn’t like the idea of bailiffs turning up at the door because I hadn’t paid the bills, so it was a bit of a no-brainer, really.

Kibble19 · 22/07/2025 15:14

What do you do, OP?

I’m going to take a mad stab at it - you work in an office, admin sort of role?

WonderingWanda · 22/07/2025 15:15

What would you like to do instead?

MurdoMunro · 22/07/2025 15:15

Yeah me too. Would give it up in a heartbeat if I could.

ForLovingAquaSheep · 22/07/2025 15:16

You're young enough to plough into your pension. I'm retiring no later than 60.

What's the point in waiting until 67/68/ God knows where it will end up. I want to be young enough and active enough to travel and enjoy it.

LauderSyme · 22/07/2025 15:17

Is it work in general that you hate or the specific job you are doing now? I ask because the answer might point towards a future scenario in which you could be happier.

I have enjoyed most of my jobs but some workplaces were toxic or boring or badly managed and I hated those.

CoyGoldenKoi · 22/07/2025 15:18

Look into FIRE - Financial Independence Retire Early.

It's more about radically reducing your costs than increasing your income, but it can make a massive difference - so far I've taken one 2 year and one 4 year "sabbatical" from work to travel, currently early 40s.

But I'm an independent consultant so it doesn't affect my ability to get work after the breaks - you do need to think through what your plans are, but the rat race isn't the only option.

You're plenty young enough to retrain into something else that you prefer and that pays better.

Parsley4321 · 22/07/2025 15:19

You need to find what you love and do more of it - I love what I do childrenswear brand

Miley23 · 22/07/2025 15:19

I think many people feel the same op. I only hopefully have a few working years left but honestly every day feels like an absolute chore to get through.
As others have said you have a lot of working years left so try to find a job you like.

This.
Work out what it is that you don't like.
Are you feeling undervalued?
Do you work many hours for little pay?
Is the job boring or not using your skills?
Is it more office based when you are more creative?

I dream of living in a tent in a forest.

To be fair, you need to provide some context for us to give a usefull response. Lots of people hate their jobs and want an alternative life.

Do you have savings? or Investments? or a plan to down-size or move to a cheaper area? Move abroad somewhere cheaper? You need a plan to work towards and may need to upend your life in order to achive this.

You might feel thst bit better if you start taking steps towards this goal. Hope it works out for you.

Sundaybananas · 22/07/2025 15:22

Me too. But I would hate more not being able to afford to live. So on I plod.

TheDogsMother · 22/07/2025 15:24

I gave up my lifetime’s career two years ago aged 60 and started something new and different. It’s not anything amazing but I love it and feel like I could carry on for a few years more. Just as well really as I have another five years until my state pension 🙄

GreenGully · 22/07/2025 15:25

I hate it too. You have my sympathies.

Westfacing · 22/07/2025 15:36

I feel your pain and it's understandable - the problem with work is that it's more or less compulsory for most people.

I'm 70, only recently retired, and have a had a mixed attitude to work since I started at aged 15!

As a teen, to me school was legally compulsory but work wasn't so I was OK with going to work. I married at 22 and had two children in my 20s and worked during this time, although financially didn't need to as ex was a high earner. With divorce at 49 I then 'needed' to work to pay my newly-acquired mortgage.

So basically I've worked for nearly 55 years, mainly full-time, and my attitude to work has waxed and waned during this time.

I can only advise that you try and find something that is reasonably enjoyable, or at least very well paid!

Muffsies · 22/07/2025 15:37

I'm 47, been working for 31 years.. private sector, public sector and not-for-profit sector; all have their pros and cons.

My only advice is to not stay in one particular job for more than 7-10 years absolute max. I've seen people make this mistake and stay too long, even if they started loving their job, they end up being taken for granted and feeling dissatisfied, then the resentment kicks in and the emp'ee/emp'er relationship breaks down.. then they get managed out or redundant, or they become too old to get the step-up they were waiting for, or too frightened to work somewhere new because their skills became out dated. Don't become jaded and work yourself obsolete, your employer won't care about all those years of loyal service.

If you've realised it's time to move on, do it now. You need a new challenge to keep your skills fresh. Also, get a stocks & shares LISA and start making your retire early fund now.
