So what are you going to do about it? Is it that you hate your job, or is it that you want to sit on your arse? Assuming it's you hate your job, figure out what would be better and start working towards it. I started retraining at 50 and it's been brilliant.

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/07/2025 15:40

I don't hate work, but don't like the them and us (night and day shift)

Kuretake · 22/07/2025 15:41

I go in waves - feeling quite happy recently in my job generally (although been a shit couple of weeks) but have been miserable in the past. I do think changing things up can help if you have that power.

CherryYellowCouch · 22/07/2025 15:45

If it makes you feel better OP I know a couple who came into a great deal of money at about your age. They both gave up work and did nothing for 6 months.

They went back to work after that. Without work, life lacked a fulfilling framework.

15 years on they are both still working.

Elasticareboot · 22/07/2025 15:45

Very few people love their jobs - work is a financial necessity…find ways to boost yourself - check your pension pot every week, little pay day rewards etc.

I don’t love work but I don’t have a trust fund so…

NotrialNodeal · 22/07/2025 15:12

I was walking into work Saturday morning and it dawned on me there's at least 30 years of work ahead of me before I can retire and even then that's optimistic 🙃

Eughhhhhh. I hate it too. Solidarity.

Yeah it’s not nice when that thought suddenly hits you is it?

EspeciallyHeinous · 22/07/2025 15:51

I had to stop work at 44 due to ill health, I am bored rigid

If a person can't figure out what to do with their time aside from work (especially if they have plenty of money) they must be as boring as hell.

CreationNat1on · 22/07/2025 15:57

I have 6 more years before both children will be finished Uni, which will bring me up to 52. I will be 100% reassesing at that time, or sooner.

Groundhog day.

Should I aim to train for a triathlon next Summer, very middle aged, so be it.

JLou08 · 22/07/2025 15:58

Me too. I haven't always hated it but this year so far has been incredibly stressful. I'm anxious every morning about having to go. I've been looking at other jobs but I have a disabled child, live in a dead end town and have no family support. My current manager is very supportive and understanding and I'm not sure I'd get that anywhere else so feel quite trapped.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 22/07/2025 16:04

Me too. I’m in the public sector and they just want more and more and more out of us but refuse to even negotiate on pay, which is so far below keeping up with inflation it’s not funny (not a doctor!). That and I thought it would be a people centred job and in reality, it’s just endless paperwork and arse covering.

Juniperberry55 · 22/07/2025 16:04

Me too OP. I'm not sure I would like to never work but it would be nice to have the option to work far less hours or way more annual leave but I couldn't afford it.
It is a bit depressing to think 30+ years left of full time work left, if poor health doesn't kick in first
But we can dream 😂

TroysMammy · 22/07/2025 16:05

PruthePrune · 22/07/2025 15:14

So do I. I'm 57 now so theoretically have another 10 years to go and can't bloody wait. I do feel as if I'm wishing my life away though.

I know exactly how you feel, I'm 57 too. I've been on annual leave for the last 11 days and besides having wardrobes built by a carpenter, I've just been pottering around the house and garden and I bloody love it. However I've got to go back to work tomorrow and I'm dreading it but I need money to continue paying for my hobbies, home improvements and pottering.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 22/07/2025 16:07

Is it working, or is it your job?

I think I just hate my job with a passion, and it’s just getting worse and worse.

Agree. I hate it too. Ive never seen work as a soul feeding pursuit, rather a necessary part of life. If had the money, I would give it up tomorrow, no question.

ThejoyofNC · 22/07/2025 16:08

Blame feminism

Have you posted this before? There was a fairly recent thread from a 35 year old who hated working.

Notmenothere · 22/07/2025 16:10

I find it disheartening when I see the landlords who live on my road enjoying what look to be work-free lives, whilst raking in who knows how much from local authorities in housing benefit/ emergency accommodation funds. They are quite open about how they have made their money, which seems to be by buying loads of properties about 20/30 years ago when BTL mortgages became available, and renting them to local authorities ever since.

It's no wonder no one wants to work. What's the point? It's hard to get promoted, pay is stagnant or below inflation for most, costs are rocketing, work itself is hard, and however hard you work, you'll never earn as much as someone with assets.

I don't mind my job, I'm a bit disgruntled because I'm struggling to get promoted, and I'm struggling with the juggle of work, home and 2 young children. But I find it so hard to remain motivated when I know that my hard work doesn't pay, and what I really need is assets.

I think they really missed the social interaction apart from anything else.

And yes, there are other ways to achieve that but they chose to return to work.

Or it could just be that alot of people in their 30s are knackered and fed up of work when they know how far retirement is. And they are likely to change the goal posts anyway, We've got another 30 something years to go and we're currently due to retire at 68 but let's face it , they may move the age up to 70,75,80, they might even just remove the age cap and you might only get to retire if signed off by a doctor, who knows

Laboheme78 · 22/07/2025 16:14

But do you hate working because you are lazy?

Or do you (just) hate your job because it’s dull/badly paid/miserable colleagues/doesn’t fit round family time?

One can be fixed, the other will be harder…

CeeJay81 · 22/07/2025 16:15

I hate working full time but unfortunately I can't afford to go part time. I think working part time that would be ideal. If I won the lottery, I'd probably volunteer or something to give me routine and feel useful.

ThejoyofNC · 22/07/2025 16:08

Blame feminism

Why? If feminism wasn't a thing, we'd probably be a home hating our lives because we couldn't leave abusive husbands. I wouldn't have been able to get a mortgage on my own, feminism isn't the problem

Summerartwitch · 22/07/2025 16:27

I have to come to realise that what I hate is the office environment and the constraint of a 9 to 5 job.

I don't mind the actual work itself but I can't deal anymore with the endless politics, poor management, unrealistic workloads, pointless meetings and HR initiatives and the back-stabbing colleagues and the lack of support from employers for flexible working/home working or part-time working. Not to mention that the UK wages are no longer attractive or keeping up with inflation.

In contrast I also do freelance work and I really enjoy that because it is much more flexible and interesting and it makes me come in contact with a wider range of people, rather than the same already mentioned back stabbing colleagues every day...

As a person with a long term health condition I am also done with employers who think that disabled employees are a nuisance.

So I am at a stage where I am doing everything I can to just be self-employed to cut out some of the bullshit and to manage my health condition better.
