My DD is 13 and is 5’0. She started her periods 2 years ago but they are still sporadic. I’m short myself at 5’4’’ but I was really hoping she would be taller than me! I stopped growing early on at 12. From what I’ve read it’s normally a year or two after puberty starts, but wondering what everyone else’s experiences are?
DH is 6 feet tall.

I read that girls generally have their main growth spurt just before their periods start (seemed true for my DD) and then grow a little more for the next couple of years but much more slowly and over time.
She may get a bit taller? But if not, it's much easier to be a shorter woman than a man!

My youngest DD is very petite, not expecting her to be very tall even though my DH is nearly 6ft - she is very much following my growth pattern and I am about 5'2.

BellissimoGecko · 20/07/2025 08:25

Dd stopped growing at 13, whereas ds is still growing at 18…

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/07/2025 08:27

I’m not sure they have!!

18 year old is 6’1” and still seems to be going. 23 year old we hadn’t seen for 4 months as at Uni, last time we saw him he looked taller, he’s a good 6’3”!!! 😳

BrinkWomanship · 20/07/2025 08:30

I don’t know the answer to your question but for the record, you’re average height for the UK, rather than short! ☺️

Eastendboysandwestendgirls · 20/07/2025 08:31

DD started her period at 13 and pretty much stopped growing then, but had a random growth spurt about 16 and added another couple of inches. Nothing after that. I thought she'd end up taller than me - I'm quite tall and her dad's several inches taller than me, but she isn't.

My DD is very similar to yours. She's 13, just finished Y8.

She started her periods first day of Year 5 , was the tallest girl in her year when she finished primary school (I'm 5'3" so she shouldn't be tallest, ever). So yes that backs up the 2 years growing. She's edged up another inch or so since but seems to have stopped now and is 5'0"/ 5'1". Her feet haven't grown for about 2 years. I don't think she'll grow any more.

Runnersandtoms · 20/07/2025 08:42

Both my girls stopped growing around 12-14. I think that's standard. It's helpful that all 3 of us have size 6 feet for shoe borrowing....
DS on the other hand is nearly 6ft and size 11 shoes at 14 and probably likely to grow more 😱

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 20/07/2025 08:46

I started my periods at 10 and was done growing at 5'8 by 12.

OneSharpFinch · 20/07/2025 08:47

Around 12 at 5ft, I'm 5ft6 and her father is 5ft8 so I was hoping she would grow a bit more as netball is her favourite thing to do but she's always been on the 9th centile so looking at those height prediction charts I think 5ft-5ft1 is probably where she'll stay.

ObstreperousCushion · 20/07/2025 08:53

Was always the smallest in her primary school class, growth spurt in late Y8-9, with a final half cm in the summer of Y10. Ended up at 5’2”, which is shorter than I am.

DD and I - still growing at 20🤷‍♀️

Rocknrollstar · 20/07/2025 08:56

I’ve lived my whole adult life at 5 foot and never found it to be a problem. I married a much taller man. I was told as a teenager that I was too small to teach in a secondary school but I proved that to be rubbish. There’s no point in worrying about DDs height but she will spend her life shortening trousers.

alittlequinnie · 20/07/2025 08:57

I don't remember with my daughter - but I was 5 feet 4 when I was pregnant with her at 16 - I was then measured again at 18 and was 5 feet 7. My Mum says that she grew two inches between 16 and 18 too.

DoAWheelie · 20/07/2025 08:58

I don't have kids yet, but I hit 5 foot 6 at 12 along with size 10 feet and started my periods the same year. I stayed the same for about 3 years and gained one more inch slowly between 15 and 17 to finish at 5 foot 7.

Mum was 5 foot 2, dad was 6 foot 2.

GentleSheep · 20/07/2025 09:05

Can only speak from my own experience as I don't have kids, but I started periods at 14.5 yrs and had a growth spurt at 15 yrs old, put on 3 inches that year, and kept growing more slowly afterwards until I was 18! Reached 5'10 and a half inches. Also had a tall dad of 6'4", Mum was 5'5".

SoftPillow · 20/07/2025 09:07

I started my periods at 13 but was still growing at 17. I’m 2 inches taller than the grown charts predicted I would be based on my age12/13 height

Ddakji · 20/07/2025 09:10

I stayed my periods at 11 and pretty much stopped growing then (5’2).

DD also started her periods at 11 and is now 15 and might still be growing (she’s taller than me). But she has some very tall relatives (not me or DH though!).

Runwayqueen · 20/07/2025 09:12

DD started her periods in year 7, having just finished year 10, she is still growing.

SpookedMackerel · 20/07/2025 09:19

Dd1 had a big growth spurt around 13, started periods at 14, definitely grew a bit more (at least an inch or two) between 14 and 15 years, but that was pretty much it, ended up roughly the same height as me around 5’5. Now she’s 18, and I don’t expect she will grow any more.

Dd2 also had a couple of really big growth spurts aged 12/13. At 14 hasn’t started periods yet, already 5’8.
If she follows the same pattern as Dd1 she might get a few inches taller still.
(Which she is hoping won’t happen, as she is already finding it difficult to buy trousers long enough, whereas dd1 can pick up any cheap things in Primark and they fit perfectly).

zingally · 20/07/2025 09:31

I started my period a couple of weeks before my 12th birthday, and pretty much stopped growing after that. I'm 5"3.

mimblewimble · 20/07/2025 09:50

DD just finished her GCSEs and is still growing slowly, about an inch in the last year I think.

She started periods at the end of primary and had her main growth spurt around then.

doubleornothing · 20/07/2025 10:02

Dd started her period at 12. Her feet have stopped growing since year 7 she's had the same size shoes 4 since then(she's just turned 16.)
She hasn't noticeably grown in the past year and is about my height 5"3. I'll know if she's grown if she does overtake me!
Ds on the other hand just turned 12 and is barley an inch off me, he'll be taller than me by then end of summer.

Scottishgirl85 · 20/07/2025 10:04

I'm exactly 5ft and have always enjoyed being small :-)

LiterallyMelting · 20/07/2025 10:08

I have a 14yo DD1 and she stopped growing about 12. DD2 is much more petite. She is 10yo, about 145cm and not grown much for a while now. I share the same worry.

SkeletonBatsflyatnight · 20/07/2025 08:46

I started my periods at 10 and was done growing at 5'8 by 12.

May I ask how you managed having periods this early?
I worry my daughter will too, the gp told me there is a good chance she will, but I am not sure how to help her navigate through the pains and break through bleedings this young.
Sorry for the intimate question though🙃

Edited to add; how did your mum handle it might be a better question.
