AIBU to ask what age your DD stopped growing?

My DD is 13 and is 5’0. She started her periods 2 years ago but they are still sporadic. I’m short myself at 5’4’’ but I was really hoping she would be taller than me! I stopped growing early on at 12. From what I’ve read it’s normally a year or two after puberty starts, but wondering what everyone else’s experiences are?
DH is 6 feet tall.

I don’t know the answer to your question but for the record, you’re average height for the UK, rather than short! ☺️

Very true! I think it’s just because DH and his family are tall and like making fun of me that I feel like I’m shorter than I actually am, if that makes sense!
DS 15 is also much taller than me and likes to remind me of that daily 😊

Thanks for your answers everyone. It’s interesting to hear such a mix of experiences. My feeling is that DD might grow another inch or two but not much more than that. Nothing wrong with being shorter, apart from the hassle of having jeans etc taken up!

I grew nearly an inch - very slowly when I was at Uni so 18 to 21. My main growth spurt and start of periods was around 15

However looks very much like DD stopped at 15, her periods started at 13. And she is a good bit shorter than me - Dad's side of family genes. Me and DH are very similar heights.

Idofeelbetter · 20/07/2025 10:32

My 19 year old (nearly 20) daughter is still growing. She started her periods at 11 and grew to 5’3 at about 14/15 then stopped, she was always smaller than me I’m 5’4 as well. These past few weeks she has been eating like crazy and now she is taller than me about 5’5, I was really surprised she was still growing. DH is 5’11.

RuthW · 20/07/2025 10:45

My now adult dd stopped about age 12.

she was the tallest in her year at age 7 then everyone caught up. She’s now 5 ft 3.

until a couple of years ago (she’s 28) she could still get into some clothes she wore at age 12.

moleeye · 20/07/2025 10:52

My 10 year old dd is almost my height (I’m 5,7) and is a size 5 shoe. She hasn’t started her period yet so I’m expecting her to continue growing for some time!

my sister is 5,9 and my brother is 6,1 so I’m expecting her to be taller than me

TheSandgroper · 20/07/2025 12:30

I had a last growth spurt at 18/19. A top had sudden grown short on me.

PrincessC0nsuelaBananaHammock · 20/07/2025 12:36

Both mine stopped growing at 12, just after they started their periods, the same as me and my sister. I'm 5 ft 2, dd1 is 5ft, and dd2 is 4ft11. They can both fit into kids clothes (both adults now). 😂I did hope they'd be taller than me as my sister is 5 ft 4, but unfortunately not. We do come from a family of midgets though, my mum is only 4 ft 10.

aintnospringchicken · 20/07/2025 13:22

Not sure exactly when DD stopped growing. She was 5ft 6 when she left primary school age 11 and just over 5ft 7 when she left 6th year at senior school and hasn’t grown any taller since( now in her 30s).Started her periods age 13.
I’m 5ft 8,DH is 5ft 10 and DS is 6ft2

I have a 14yo DD1 and she stopped growing about 12. DD2 is much more petite. She is 10yo, about 145cm and not grown much for a while now. I share the same worry.

145cm for a 10yo is well above average though?

I hope it's ok to revive this thread as not that old.

@Mungomango has your dd gained any more height?

My dd will be 14 in a few months and no period in sight. She is still shorter than her friends all of whom also have their period.

Generally speaking do girls all tend to have a fast and furious growth spurt just before their first period? How long before, weeks, months? Seems like dd is a bit of an outlier among her peer group. Has anyone's dd just grown steadily rather and skipped the whole spurt phase?

kel7f6g · 27/02/2026 08:18

I know this is an old thread but it’s fascinating to read as a boy mum, Im so jealous of all the girl mums not having to deal with growing weeds for teens 😂 especially the feet!!

RandomMess · 27/02/2026 08:26

4 girls they all stopped at different ages.

The two who are 5’7 - one at 12 one at 15 the two who are 5’4 one at 13 one at 16.

DH family are stop growing very young and are ridiculously tall. I am ridiculously short and grew until at least 18 4 years after my periods started.

RandomMess · 27/02/2026 08:27

@browsingingerI was a very slow grower

whoTFismadelaine · 27/02/2026 08:32

Dd is 14 and 5'8 and still growing (although it has slowed a lot, Y7-9 were when she went from 5'1 to 5'7 and it felt like nothing ever fit properly). I seem to remember feeling I had stopped around 6th form.

Waitingfordoggo · 27/02/2026 08:59

My DD started periods at 11 and stopped growing by 13. She is 5ft 1. I’m 5ft 3 and expected her to end up taller than me but no! She is perfectly happy to be a bit shorter than average.

JaceLancs · 27/02/2026 09:07

I stopped growing at 11, I would say DD was 12
I too hoped she would beat me at 5’4” but she ended up a petite 5’2”

Pasta4Dinner · 27/02/2026 09:17

I started my periods when I was 11 and was still growing at university. I don’t know how unusual that is. Not loads but I was definitely taller after uni than before and my feet grew.
hoping for the same for DD, even though she’s 17 she would like to be a bit taller

thewalrus · 27/02/2026 09:35

I stopped growing around 13 and am 5ft.
DD1 stopped growing at around 13/14 and is 5ft 3.
DD2 stopped growing at around 14/15 and is 5ft. She is built very like I was, has always been very petite, and we have the same size feet.
DH is 5ft11 and stopped growing at around 19. Very late growth spurt, was smallest in school year at 16.
DS is 5ft8 and I think is still growing at 17. Has grown late like DH. He would like to end up taller than his dad - I think it is odds-against, but he has got very big feet!

SuzyFandango · 27/02/2026 09:39

It really depends. Kids who are tending on the heavy side often appear "tall" in primary, then get periods early and stop growing early and end up relatively shorter.

My niece was quite lean & not that tall, she got her period quite (nearly age 14) and carried on growing until about age 16 after which she grew a little but much slower. Probably 1 more inch.

MabelAnderson · 27/02/2026 10:18

How tall are your wider family OP ? As you are average and your husband tall, your dd would be most likely to end up slightly taller than you. It’s not an exact science though. I am tallish at five eight, my Dh is shortish (we are the same height). Both our dds are shorter than me, although not by a lot. I thought dd2 would be the tallest as she started her periods at 14, two years later than dd1, but she is the smallest at about five foot five and I think she has just stopped growing now at 18. Dd1 stopped growing at 16, I started my periods at 16 and grew until 20. Dh and I both have a mixture of heights in our ancestry but he is short in his wider family now while I am tall.
I did drink loads of milk as a teenager, maybe that was a factor !

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 27/02/2026 16:29

I was 5' 1" at 15, yet to start my periods. In the following year, all hell broke loose hormone wise and reached 5'7". Feet were size 5 at 11 and same with growth spurt, so no idea if they hit their size first, but did for me.
