Raynor Winn/Sally Walker's statement Raynor Winn

New posters welcome. It would be helpful to read at least the four Observer items above before posting.

I feel sorry for her.
Reminds me of the Captain Tom Moore fallout.
Way over the top.
Guessing that the film rights etc elevated the cash cow and litigation aspects to new levels.

afternoon all, have been out walking a section of the Slate Path with the Wild Pooing Correspondent (otherwise known as DDog) and a friend who has seen the film. Part of our conversation did indeed touch on the unveiling. Friend thought the film was ok but had clearly been filmed only in the section between Ilfracombe and Minehead; according to her there weren't any scenes in Newquay or other busy areas. She said this made for some amusing bits where the sea shifted from being on the right (as it would be walking in the direction they were going) to being on their left when it was representing another bit of the path. We were chatting about how artistic licence like that doesn't bother either of us, but presenting as 100% factually accurate a tale which is very far from that is something completely different.

One thing I have always observed by scolders of MN threads (and to some extent, Tattle) is that it's always where it's largely women talking that attracts the wiggings and descriptions like 'mumsy'. Other fora such as are typically populated largely by men don't attract this sort of comment, despite them being much more plainspeaking and robust.

Anyway, even though I don't have children, you should imagine all my posts clothed in velour and adorned by a frilly apron. I'd hate to let the side down otherwise.

PS @Bauds1 hello and welcome! I took the reference to 29 July to mean the next episode of the Obs podcast that would feature Chloe H. I wasn't necessarily expecting anything new to be revealed then, if that makes sense.

there were scenes filmed in both Padstow and Newquay. It was the bit from St Ives round to Fowey that was missing! The only south coast I could see was at Rame.

Somewhat random interjection from me , but something odd from the book which I found irritating and strange was a tale of a soup kitchen in Newquay . I lived there until 2021 , was quite involved with various community projects / charities and cannot recall a soup kitchen at all. There was a drop in hub , now closed , which provided meals on certain days plus a community kitchen which did similar . Maybe it's my age - similar to RW - but the soup kitchen words conjured images of earlier times when Men of the Road received basic sustenance from soup kitchens from kind hearted citizens . I felt it was an archaic phrase used to emphasise the reader's impression of how down on their luck Raymoth were at the time. She is fond of tugging at her reader's heartstrings by using flowery, emotive language

Mind you, I must admit to being pretty cross with them for perpetuating the myth that a good old walk will sort everything out and wish I had a pound for everytime some well meaning person has suggested similar to me so i probably am just being irritable and splitting hairs . And as an aside , was asked to cut back on exercise the other day by physio as they feel it's worsening one of my conditions currently. My daily goal is to walk round town and to the beach for an hour in total. About a mile . Yes it takes me that long and I need painkillers in order to achieve that but my muscles are wasting alarmingly now.
Often physically unable to get further than.the garden. It's rubbish .

It seems there was a soup kitchen at an old church in 2012.

https://newquaytown.com/soup-kitchen

However, reading TSP, it's interesting that the Winn's visit is entirely glossed over by various statements about homelessness in the area. One would think their first experience of a soup kitchen would provide prime material for writing about given their own situation, need for sustenance etc, while there's plenty of anecdotes when it comes to cafes and chip vans.

Newquay Soup Kitchen - Newquay

A NEW soup kitchen and café has opened in Newquay to help the town's homeless population. The Drop In and Share Centre on St Michael's Road will be funded by the money it makes operating as a regular café between 10am and noon on Fridays... Continue rea...

@swpath Solidarity. There's a whole strand of commentary here that's obvious to many, but left unsaid. Wales, Scotland, Kernow. Alongside their many specific pilferings, the Winn/Walkers also reveal an overarching attitude of anglo-exceptionalism, appropriation, exploitation of what is not theirs. But that's a much larger discussion! We have plenty of tangible deceptions to cover.

I have anchored, rowed to shore so now down to business. Re: the Izzy Wyn-Thomas book. Surely the inaugural winner of the prize below was Ms Winn for Salt.
RSL Christopher Bland Prize
It is awarded annually to an author of a fiction or non-fiction book who was first published when aged 50 or over. The prize is valued at £10,000 and was launched in September 2018.
If she wrote the 2012 published book that would disqualify her?

Oh good spot!

Good point well made @TheBrandyPath. It’s not entirely clear who Izzy Wyn-Thomas is and I am not entirely convinced she is the (sole) author of TSP anyway as Moth’s family is far more creative.

do the rules include self published books?

gattocattivo · 20/07/2025 16:07

@TheBrandyPathsuperb work. I’ve just checked out the eligibility criteria for the prize and it certainly seems she shouldn’t have entered.

that’s another 10k she owes then.

I'm so sorry you're struggling - it sounds like you have a huge amount of resilience 💐

And that's really interesting insight - maybe SW just assumed soup kitchens are everywhere and she'd get away with that fabrication? Or amended the hub to make it evoke more pathos.

I know others might say little fibs are harmless, but it seem like there are dozens. Some more criminal than others, but of course now it makes you question everything.

Was it a total scam scheme?

Thank you for your kind words . I try to focus on what I can still do rather than what isn't possible any longer but still seethe with resentment on a regular basis. Was 14 months into a blissful , interesting, travel- filled retirement when this nonsense started . It's the unpredictability of flares which really frustrate as it makes planning Nice Happenings impossible. Can never forecast accurately how I'll be from one day to the next plus frequent medical appointments for monitoring my conditions mean I need to stay local anyhoo. I did wonder how Moth managed to keep up with his medical appointments etc whilst on these long walks .

My feeling is she uses words to evoke more pathos exactly as you so eloquently put it . I know of a couple of people who do the same in everyday life . Interestingly, neither of them take accountability for any misfortunes in their lives either . It's always someone else's fault and they don't understand why people are so mean / get fed up with them . Or why their families have ostracised them as have friends and acquaintances. It's a definite personality type IMO. Possibly a personality disorder?

As to it being a scam scheme. I also believe they had no.idea whatsoever that the book would become so famous so it probably wasn't to start with . Pretty hard when you become enmeshed to the degree they have to them stick your hand up and admit your unflinching honest account , isn't.

TonstantWeader · 20/07/2025 16:11

Settle in @TheBrandyPath & @swpath and make yourselves at home 😍as @Stravaig said, there's an enormous dollop of condescension at various points. See also discussion above about a Welsh person working in Wales who has a Welsh accent. I mean, who knew....

Stravaig · 20/07/2025 16:12

@Choux Now I wonder exactly when RSL specified that - and why?

gattocattivo · 20/07/2025 16:15

Who’s our RSL specialist?

Nameychangington · 20/07/2025 16:17

I've been thinking about the Izzy Winn Thomas book. Raymoth admitted that was them didn't they, in what identifies as their rebuttal?

By admitting that they're actually admitting to quite a few lies. Admitting the author name is them under another false name (ok pen names are common), but also the names of the publishing company people were all false, complete with fake mini bios. And the story of the raffle changed, I think between the small holder forum and somewhere else I can't remember where - in one they said they were an author with a great book and a publicist with a house to shift joining forces, in another that they'd scoured the countryside for the ideal house. Then the raffle itself was said to be for a house completely free of any charges, which was clearly a lie as it was both mortgaged and had a loan secured on it.

So Raymoth by admitting that they did hold that raffle are admitting to a minimum 3 lies in the administration of it, the biggest obviously that they were raffling a house saying it was free from charges when it wasn't. They outed themselves as people who constructed quite an elaborate con - not one part of the raffle scenario was actually truthful - who they were, why they were doing it, what they were offering. That wasn't 'mistakes being made' you don't create a fake publishing company owned by imaginary people raffling a mortgaged house as being free of charges by accident or on a whim. It was a con, and they've admitted they did it.

The photo of Izzy Wyn-Thomas on the Gangani website certainly looks like Sally Walker. And we know she was a director of Gangani Publishing. Can't be 100% certain of course without an admission but evidence is very strong. "Thomas" was also the first name of her father, and we know how she likes to make use of family names.

However, I think you are right about self-published books.

Thank you for that . That is indeed the drop in centre which has now sadly closed although it later moved venues . I hadn't heard it referred to as a soup kitchen before. Just DISC . Could be where RW got the phrase from. And I would agree it would have been interesting to hear of her experience there as a first time user of such a facility .

Although I do find it odd that they needed to.use DISC at all what with their son living in Newquay. Even if he was away somewhere at the time , surely he'd given mum and dad a key and invited them to.use his place whilst they were in the area ? My kids and I have often used our homes in that way .
They seemed close , going by son giving dad a surfing lesson and driving them.to.Bristol and back. Which again, I found a bit odd as cheap coaches do that run for v little cost . Certainly cheaper than a round trip in a car .

It was a con, and they've admitted they did it.

To play devil's advocate, it was my understanding from the website and/or forum thread that the house would only be "won" once the house value had been raised through selling enough books (ie they were hoping/trying to sell enough books to get a sum of cash equal to the value of the house). At this point they could have paid the debt, drawn the raffle, tranaferred the deeds to the winner and maybe have a meagre amount left to rent somewhere, depending on how much they raised. Of course, they saw the folly of this approach and gave up. That said, we'll never know if they ever intended to draw a raffle winner, or simply pay off the debts and save their house, or what was really going in their heads!

Sure, but it's just the involvement of Sally Walker with Gangani that's needed here. But, yes, you are right to correct on this.
