Leaving ceiling fan on while away

DownmarketSellingSunset · 16/07/2025 23:59

We’re going on holiday tomorrow. DH says it isn’t a problem to leave the ceiling fan turned on in our bedroom while we’re away. I strongly disagree. Who is BU?

For info, the ceiling fan is dodgy and if we turn it off it might never turn back on. If that happens we’ll just have to replace it, which we’ll have to do at some point anyway.

OP posts:

If it’s dodgy I wouldn’t leave it on, how’s long are you away for?
i’d take the risk to switch it off and hope that it came back on when you got home

but then again I accidentally switched my fridge freezer off last year when I turned off all the other kitchen appliances 🤦🏻‍♀️

PruthePrune · 17/07/2025 00:03

Why on earth would it be left on if you are away? Might as well put the TV on as well.

Makingpeace · 17/07/2025 00:03

Turn it off.

BreakingBroken · 17/07/2025 00:05

unless you have mold issues and need the air circulation of all the things to leave on why the ceiling fan?

Givenupshopping · 17/07/2025 00:12

Sorry OP, but I think your DH has lost the plot!! No way should you go away leaving an electric appliance on when it's not completely necessary, ie a fridge/freezer, let alone one that's obviously developed a fault. Tell him to switch it off before you go, and then get a new one installed when you get back, surely he doesn't want to risk the house burning down while you're away, does he?

mumda · 17/07/2025 00:13

Turn it off.
Get it fixed when you get back.

BlackCoffeeAndSugar · 17/07/2025 00:14

Off.

thebluehour · 17/07/2025 00:52

Well, a house fire would warm the place up for your return...

waltzingparrot · 17/07/2025 00:57

But what if the motor overheats and bursts into flames and your house burns down.

Brandyb · 17/07/2025 01:00

What does he hope to achieve by leaving it on? Please explain the logic

MarxistMags · 17/07/2025 01:00

God NO ! If there was a short circuit then you might come to no house at all 😞

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 17/07/2025 01:07

Who or what is the fan going to fanning exactly? It needs to go off.

summertimeinLondon · 17/07/2025 01:12

Anything with moving parts has an extra risk of fire. No way would I risk leaving a fan on whilst away!

healthybychristmas · 17/07/2025 06:25

He is an absolute idiot. What about the cost of running the fan? Why would he want to pay that when he doesn't want to pay for a repair?

BlueandPinkSwan · 17/07/2025 07:01

I won't go out leaving the washing machine on, let alone leaving a dodging appliance for days on end.
Switch it off and get it fixed when you get back or don't use it until it is fixed.

ThePoshUns · 17/07/2025 07:05

No chance! What is the point?

PermanentTemporary · 17/07/2025 07:06

Leaving a possibly faulty electric appliance running unattended for ?a week sounds… courageous. No, daft is what it sounds.

SueSheeMee · 17/07/2025 07:16

Our old ceiling fan caught fire whilst we were sleeping a few years ago. Luckily it made an awful noise at the same time so woke us instantly. He's a dick.

InMyOpenOnion · 17/07/2025 07:18

It's dangerous to leave an electrical appliance running unattended for days on end, even if it doesn't have a fault. Your fan is clearly faulty on top of that. Your husband is an idiot.

BeamMeUpCountMeIn · 17/07/2025 07:20

Do not do this. It's such a fire risk.

Isitreallysohard · 17/07/2025 07:21

I wouldn't, could start a fire

orwellwasright2025 · 17/07/2025 07:26

Turn it off and get if fixed when you come home. What if it overheats? Especially considering you said it's a bit dodgy.

If you can afford a holiday you can afford to get it repaired or replaced when you return.

RememberBeKindWithKaren · 17/07/2025 07:27

Yes if you want to come back to a pile of rubble

Ddakji · 17/07/2025 07:37

Regardless of how dodgy it is, that’s a mad idea. Why pay the electricity to cool a room no one is in?

Do you leave it running constantly?

SpinachSpinachMoreSpinach · 17/07/2025 07:40

😱

nowt weird as folk…
