Leaving ceiling fan on while away

DownmarketSellingSunset · 16/07/2025 23:59

We’re going on holiday tomorrow. DH says it isn’t a problem to leave the ceiling fan turned on in our bedroom while we’re away. I strongly disagree. Who is BU?

For info, the ceiling fan is dodgy and if we turn it off it might never turn back on. If that happens we’ll just have to replace it, which we’ll have to do at some point anyway.

Huh? Why on earth would you not turn it off? Who is is keeping cool?

BlueBelle7979 · 17/07/2025 07:57

Of all the things to leave on- a dodgy fan?!?! Your husband has lost the plot

IMissSparkling · 17/07/2025 07:59

Do you mean you currently leave it running 24/7, even when you go out? No wonder the planet is fucked.

Regardless of how dodgy it is, that’s a mad idea. Why pay the electricity to cool a room no one is in?

Do you leave it running constantly?

Especially as it won’t cool the room. As with anything that’s using energy, it will be creating a bit of heat. Fans only make us feel cooler because the air flow evaporates our sweat and moves our surface heat away.

rainbowsparkle28 · 17/07/2025 08:12

Of course you don’t leave it on…

A) it’s unnecessary and wasteful - you are not there for goodness sake 🤨🙄
B) if it’s dodgy definitely sounds like a significant fire hazard being left on, you don’t want to be returning to a burnt down home all for the inconvenience of having to get it sorted when you’re back
C) get the fan sorted so works properly and you can keep nice and cool! 🤗

My friend’s house burned down when she left the dishwasher running and went to work. Unlike your ceiling fan, there was no prior indication that it was dodgy.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 17/07/2025 08:15

You'll likely invalidate your house insurance too. Not what you want if your dodgy fan burns the house down.

DiscoBeat · 17/07/2025 08:15

It's dodgy and he wants to leave it on unattended. Just be the last one out of the room so you can switch it off like a normal person!

No way

The mad idea is it won’t cool the room with no one in it. Fans cool people.

Why on earth would it be left on if you are away? Might as well put the TV on as well.

She literally says it in the OP.
If she turns it off, it may not work again! So that's why dh wants to leave it on.

OP, it doesn't sound safe. I'd just turn it off.

Unicorn34 · 17/07/2025 08:26

It sounds defective so it should be turned off. Tbh if it catches fire then you may come back to a lot worse than the fan not working. My husband is a retired firefighter and the things he has seen that cause a fire to start means that I literally have to turn everything off when we go out!

Have a lovely holiday x

Well, a house fire would warm the place up for your return...

This.

TheyFuckYouUpYourMamAndDad · 17/07/2025 08:43

Jesus! Your DH is ridiculous! He’s clearly wanting to not have to pay for a new one…but fuck me, it would be a damn site more expensive to financially recover from a burned down house!

Fucking moron!
