Kids are as good as anyone at VPNs. It's just going to open adults up to blackmail and state control.

Also if you don't want your kids looking at adult material maybe don't let them have a smartphone until they're 16.

I am very happy with adults watching women and girls be sexually abused being controlled by the state.

See if it was just for porn I wouldn’t have much of an issue, but it isn’t, and it’s a slippery slope.

LlynTegid · 16/07/2025 18:14

I support this change and want it consistently enforced. Even better if some sites withdraw from being available in the UK.

Exactly. Anything arbitrarily badged "adult material" is now behind a wall. (Although I do also think it's an egregious invasion of adult sexuality but I know mumsnet takes a dim view of that)

But your kids will still see it on the phones you still allow them because they're better at tech than you.

And it takes about 2 minutes to learn how to install a VPN anyway, so I don’t see what good it’s going to do really.

It will catch naive people only, a bit like inheritance tax.

Unless the next step is to ban VPNs...

It’s not arbitrary is it? Safeguarding is never perfect - what’s better - decreasing the risk of abuse especially to children or sometimes stopping an aduot
getting off (often to trafficked people being abused)

So what?

What's wrong with that?

Malvaceae · 16/07/2025 18:20

You use the term ‘state control’ as if the state is automatically evil. Thank goodness for state control. It’s what makes for a civilised society.

Quite. What do you think laws against murder and rape are? What do you think traffic lights are?

Mumsnet will likely be covered by this due to the 18+ topics and language used on the site

Yep. I remember when everyone's details were leaked by that TRA person. Wonder how happy folk will be to post when effectively potentially public.

Maybe it will have to offshore and become MuttisNett or sthg

Notes Reddit is adopting this also, I think we need to go further with this personally and have apps like Snapchat require ID verification to stop all the Middle Aged creeps presenting as youngsters…

Again... Why not just ban kids from smartphones? It would be good for their half rotten brains.

16 seems arbitrary if you’re concerned that children will still have access to material which will be defined as illegal for them to see if under 18?

If you can have sex at 16 you can cope with seeing a digital dingdong at 16

Exactly, so I’m confused by your point then- are you suggesting that children under 16 will still have access to the sites that are classified as for over 18, on their smartphones?

despairofbadscience · 16/07/2025 19:16

What are you so worried about! Genuinely

Disturbia81 · 16/07/2025 19:21

No-one needs porn.

GrandHighPoohbah · 16/07/2025 19:26

I think anything that helps prevent age - inappropriate content being accessed by children is a step forward. And before the OP comes bleating back about it all being on parents to disallow phones, there are a large number of pathways to digital content without owning a phone. A combination of parental and government control is better than just parental control. Now, if they could get to work on the algorithms that seek out teenage boys and serve them up incel bollocks, that would be a good next step.
