I'm not going to start giving proof of age to MN for example. So that sounds like a problem. I'm only aware of it in relation to porn sites which seems fair enough.

Anything that improves the current situation is better than nothing. Complaining it is not perfect is like saying alcohol shouldnt be age restricted just because kids can still get hold of it if they try hard enough

The problem arises because not everyone has a driving licence or passport. Until we have a government backed National ID for everyone then the poor and disabled will be unfairly discriminated against.

Encryption is already under attack, the govt want a backdoor just for them, ignoring the response that this is in fact is impossible and opens the door to compromising everyone's safety. They refuse to understand this, deliberately because they are NOT stupid, its just not in their interest to admit it. Achieve this goal, and there's no need to go after VPNs .. which already have limitations for protecting you because the end points (places you reach via your VPN) can be coerced to release information. Also, there are certain behaviors you need to watch for that can potentially leak your identity. For example, do something illegal and login to your email on the VPN. Opps, your email provider cooperated with the govt and now they got some info to find out more things :-s

What should be remembered here is that it was invented for military/govt use. Internet Explorer used come in 2 flavors due to export controls imposed by the US government. They never wanted it in general use, and its been tolerated due to the benefits of commercial use and the ability to intercept it via coercion of businesses. End to end encryption, historically, has been fiddly enough to overlook it .. until, whoops, somebody improved it and made it popular. Now multiple governments hate it with a passion

Exactly what data a single entity stores is not the only concern. There is also cross-referencing with other data sources. Leaks not required, when the government and legal system is involved.

There is also the fact that, once a principle or process is established, the uses can be expanded. Social media is an option, given how often it comes up as a source of anxiety for various reasons. Age verification is also adjacent to proving identity, generally, offline as well as online
