Kids are as good as anyone at VPNs. It's just going to open adults up to blackmail and state control.

Also if you don't want your kids looking at adult material maybe don't let them have a smartphone until they're 16.

Ah well - let’s give up on all regulation then

Err no.

In fact as you see from my earlier posts I believe quite the opposite.

It's about implementing the right sort of regulation.

I believe the regulation should start at the device and it should be up to the parents to parent their children as to which devices they can use and what they can do with those devices. And that process needs to be as simple as possible and devices need to have the functionality to actually do it.

Not sure where this idea that all kids are computer geniuses comes from. Most teens I know have grown up in a world where computers are intuitive and very user-friendly. As soon as they come across a barrier they have no idea what to do.

Many Youtubers popular with teens and children are sponsored by VPN companies and their favourite YT’er will accompany that ad with innocent uses of VPNs like watching Netflix from other countries as they have different films around the world.

You can google how to get around parental controls and teens will exchange tips with their friends in person. If it’s a question that many would have then somebody will cash in and make videos on TikTok or similar to help. The videos from when TikTok went dark in the US for like 12 hours are probably still around.

It will be relatively easy to get round controls at first but as time develops it gets more and more difficult.

For example if you have an encrypted android phone my believe is that it is very difficult to get into it if you don't know the (long) password. Even I think the FBI have trouble.

If it is hard enough for them, then it would stop the majority of kids. And of course when you do find a hole, you plug it.

You would need to have greater restrictions on the system though. It's easier to plug a hole at an entry point than to plug holes once you are inside the system. You would have to do things like restrict apps etc.

But in my opinion this should be done anyway, and there should be a belt and braces approach with ISPs for example letting parents know that VPNs are being used on specific devices.

it will be a constant war between developers and people/children trying to circumvent the system. But that is how hacking/security works at the moment and is the price you need to pay if you want restriction, probably funded by a digital tax.

Ah, so thats why reddit wanted an age verification selfie of me earlier.
I didnt mind, i was reading the nosleep reddit of the national park SAR ranger guy and his strange experiences.
Weird place to request ID mind you as didnt think it was NSFW content.

Similar to the Chinese approach then. With the added frisson that people using VPNs lose social points

What? I haven't heard this
I despise Starmer but this seems... potentially slanderous at least.

Third man charged over fires at homes linked to Keir Starmer - BBC News

The rumour is some of these men had Grindr accounts...
The radio silence about motives or how these men knew so much about Kier to the point of burning a car he had sold! is all rather fishy. One might say the actions of a scorned.....

Probably more because it's unremarkable. There is very little that can't be winkled out from publicly available information if you know what you are doing and are prepared to pay a bit. All it takes is a few terabytes to store the incessant stream of data leaks, a bit of analytics and you could divine a lot from little. These days it's probably easier to find out more about people who have little or no online presence compared to people who live life online 😁

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 17/07/2025 17:59

Just me being my usual cynical self, and I'm no fan of Starmer, but if I'm some foreign power known for engaging in psyops, honeytraps, and disinformation campaigns, and I want to discredit and emasculate a hostile politician, hiring some men to attack or destroy property belonging to that politician, and throwing in a whole load of innuendo and slander designed to cast aspersions about both his sexuality and his marital fidelity would be a pretty easy way to go about it. Put it this way; I don't think many people in the UK would actually give a toss about Starmer's personal sexual preferences. There are other, recent PM's who were not entirely what they professed to be in public and it made not one iota of difference, however, there are certain countries where that sort of thing is still considered make or break, and this is reflected in the fact that they mistakenly believe this also must be the case in every other part of the planet, and this is also reflected in the somewhat naive way they still conduct their dirty business outside of their own sphere of influence.

In respect to the relationship between parent and child, yes.

In respect to the relationship between state and parent, no.

Sesma · 17/07/2025 18:29

I don't think you need to be some sort of expert to use a VPN, it is fairly basic for anyone to do, whatever age unless maybe you were about 90

Parents taking responsibility for their own offspring maybe

OP posts:
Agniezs · 17/07/2025 21:37

Digital id won’t stop kids accessing inappropriate material. Just like drugs being illegal doesn’t stop the increasing number of weed smokers wandering around city centres.

Some parents will allow their child to use their device. Not all parents care if their 9 year old is playing GTA or Call of Duty. Some parents allow their 14 year olds to vape in the house.

So some parents or older siblings or cousins or 18 year old friends will think it’s funny or normal for 14 year olds to watch porn or violent videos. They will give them access to it. Then, if they can be bothered, the teen could use a second device to record the imagery on the screen and distribute to their mates. A bit like recording your mates new cd in the 90s.

Digital ID also assumes adults are on board. And is 16 the new age of adulthood after today’s announcement?

Fragmentedbrain · 17/07/2025 22:06

Yeah it's pretty weird you can vote but not have unfettered access to reddit

OR: You take responsibility for your own ID and porn access.

It’s hardly the end of the world. You can still have a wank you know. It seems very important to you to see sex videos, and you will still be able to do that.

Again you are just telling on yourself when you demonstrate that you think a really common source of sexual pleasure is shameful. More people use porn than don't. You're so narrow minded you don't even understand what you're backing because you can't get past your Burn the Witch instincts about other women showing your husband their boobs in digital form.

OP posts:

Because I don't want to live in an environment that is destabilised by the effects this will have.

It is depressing that prudes will lead us down this path because they can't understand different sexualities. So they try to win by shaming people into silence. I don't particularly care for porn I can't get beyond how silly it is (and someone I vaguely know became a porn actor and I would NOT like to stumble across them in the nip). But the whole it's demonic ban it and ban anything adjacent to it thing just makes me think some women don't like sex and don't want anyone else to like it. And, more importantly, they're willing to sell basic freedoms down the river to make sure other people can't enjoy it freely.

Oh ffs, stop lecturing normal people who don't like women being raped, drugged, trafficked and forced to commit fucking horrifying acts not to mention the grotesque amount of underage filmed rape there is on porn sites. Most porn isn't sex, at the very best most of it is completely unrealistic and huge quantities of it are exactly as I just said. Most of it should be taken down, prosecutions made and nobody, not one single person alive, needs it or would be in any way worse off if it all disppeared overnight.

You already know that every single word I just typed is absolutely true.

We get it, you're porn addicted. Nobody cares. Next.

They're going to ask for a video of your face, with you moving and talking. Some places have already started.

Or perhaps the fact that most porn involves exploitation, abuse and rape is actually what’s shameful. Frankly no-one should be able to access it given the harm it causes.

Yeah and all you do is use a vpn
are you really going to trust external sites with your personal details

I mean our government only this week has shown how easy it is to lose data and how happy they are to lie and get super injunctions to hide this from the general public

anyone who hands over their data / photos to these verification sites are stupid

just use a vpn and nothing changes
over on Reddit there already chatting how to get around it and recommending the best vpns to use

You cannot get around it with a VPN, but I already use one and a throwaway email for any comments like this online, becuause in the UK (and in Aus) the thought police have already arrested and harassed many people for being dissidents. That's what the entire scheme is about, they want to put a face and a name to absolutely everything that is said anywhere online, so they can add you to a list.

Forcing someone to make a video of their face while they are talking removes the usefulness of a vpn. They are also going to prevent people from using vpns, that's next on the list.

Anyone who thinks this is paranoia has not been paying attention to history. Pol Pot, Chairman Mao and Hitler would have been delighted by this scheme.

It's not about protecting children, never has been, never will be. They just needed something the twits could point to as a "reason" while they hand over their right to free speech and freedom of expression.

Oh I agree it’s never been about protecting kids
the government couldn’t care less about kids
they never have and never will
its just that think of the kids and stop the porn looks & sounds much better to the general public

than we want to know everything you are up to so we can throw you in jail if you dare to disagree with us

if they said this then the government would he out on their ass quicker than you could show a bare ass

but at the moment you can get around it with a VPN that’s not to say that won’t change
