One million immigrants claiming benefits

1000 replies

AnxiousApocalypse · 16/07/2025 01:15

Just been reading the comments sections of the Daily Telegraph and Daily Mail articles about the one million foreigners claiming benefits in the UK. It feels like the final nail in the coffin and a lot of people will feel even more justified in expressing their anger and hate towards immigrants. What happens when Reform win the next general election and come into power? Will people be rounded up en masse and put in detention centres like the USA?

Where are you going to build these centres? How much will it cost do you think?

The government bought the site of a disused prison near Bexhill with a view to using it for asylum seeker accommodation, but after local opposition, they ditched the plan.

I think the amount of money wasted was in the region of £15m.

You make me sick too. Im sick to death of you and your kind spreading bigotry and disinformation off the back of VAWAG. You're weaponising gender based violence to suit your agenda. Surely you follow Tommy Robinson? He advertises all the marches to 'protect women'.

‘You and your kind’ 🤦‍♀️
I quoted a personal experience. You are generalising about me and my beliefs.
It appears that you are a bigot.

Good to see high quality nuanced debate upheld.

Why would I want a debate with you? I'm not going to change my mind.

Because it's being taken the piss out of massively. Have you seen the Albanian gangs in some UK towns and cities? They're not here because of threat in their own country. How about the Roma who get over and scam our own countrymen? Ever seen them on London Bridge scamming the tourists? We let anyone in and that's the issue.

Albanians and Romanians aren't refugees or asylum seekers.

Unfortunately the last government ran the country into the ground and the judicial system is in crisis. We don't have enough police or prison space and courts are severely backlogged.

FieldDrop · 16/07/2025 18:45

@TreatTreat

Germany is 1.5 times bigger than UK, but takes 5x more refugees. .

So ‘they are not all coming here because we are a soft option’.

Why do you think that?

Same with the Bibby Stockholm, £22m wasted

I think the British are being played. You're all being encouraged to hate the people who might be immigrants when the real problem is lack of public investment in housing, education and health.

I have been saying this for years.
Its so frustrating to watch everyone lap up the blatant propaganda in these rags and attempts at diverting attention from the billionaires not paying their taxes.

Lets keep all the ‘little people’ angry at each other so they don’t turn their attention to us.

So depressing.

And Rwanda - that was £750 million if I remember correctly.

I take it you will not be honouring Aug 2, which is Roma Holocaust memorial day, with a moment of silence.

You lack comprehension skills which is understandable.

We have something in the UK called 'welfare'. Depending on your need eg seeking employment or disability, what you can claim varies. Asylum seekers aren't entitled by law to claim benefits.

They're entitled to certain rights under the Refugee Convention, for example accommodation and obviously food. This doesn't come from the welfare bill. That's because they can't claim benefits.

The childishness is repeating the same rubbish over and over again despite being corrected.

And you seem to be purposely antagonising anyone and everyone on this thread for some bizarre reason. Purposely misrepresenting what they’re saying or missing the point completely.

Do you not consider bed and board a form of welfare/benefit? Yes it may not come from the same pot as UC but it’s still from the public purse which I’ve said many times. To say “they don’t get benefits”’is missing the point that they’re still receiving from the public purse, sometimes more than actual natives.

It's absolutely ridiculous. I'm so sad for this country and its people.

Equalfrogjob · 16/07/2025 18:57

As of June 2023 (the most recent estimate provided by ONS) there is an estimated 11.4M foreign nationals in the UK, roughly 18% of the population. According to the UC stats referred to by the telegraph/DM 86.4% of UC claimants are British and Irish nationals meaning only 12.6% of UC claimants are foreign nationals, meaning foreign nationals claim UC at a lesser rate than British and Irish nationals. It's a big headline but not an unreasonable amount of people to be claiming UC, just another reason to stir up hate towards foreign nationals and asylum seekers (who aren't even part of the statistics as they can't claim UC but people will use any excuse to hate on asylum seekers).

Rewis · 16/07/2025 18:58

Jennps · 16/07/2025 06:43

It’s astonishing that people are still burying their heads in the sand, engaging in whataboutery and refuting that immigration is a problem in this country.

The attempts to shut down people speaking out by calling them racist are so predictable and don’t wash so well anymore. Uncontrolled immigration has meant that all immigration risks losing support in this country.

You can’t blame people coming over. Who wouldn’t make the most of a mug country which doesn’t mind having open borders and adding a million people a year who on average are net takers. Unfortunately, we are not bringing people who area adding value to the economy. You can be as disingenuous as you like arguing that someone needs to do low paid jobs, the truth is that they don’t. Uncontrolled and unskilled immigration just acts a replacement for investment in the economy on automation and increased productivity. It’s a complete disaster.

On top of that the unskilled immigrants bring large families, non working spouses and elderly relatives with them, adding massive costs to the economy. Immigrants are over represented in welfare and social housing claim numbers too.

It is absolute madness that someone on near minimum wage can come in, bring their children to schooled here, a mom working spouse who adds nothing to the economy and elderly parents who are further drain on the NHS. In a few years, they claim social housing, universal credit, due to poor English requiring interpreters to use the public services they haven’t contributed to and many more issues.

Immigration in this country is broken, putting huge burdens on the ever decreasing number of net contributors and will be final straw the breaks the camel’s back financially.

Edited

I mean, I've been trying to get a visa and looked through different ways to move to UK so me and my partner could live together (again). I'd love to know this shortcut cause thus far it requires me and/or my partner earning quite a bit of money and paying quite a bit of surcharge inorder to be able to use NHS.

Busybeemumm · 16/07/2025 19:00

Yep it is the 'so called natives' who don't work for generations upon generations who are claiming UC, sitting in council houses and refusing to work.

But they came illegally on the boats in great number.

Google “In 2022, Albanians were the top nationality arriving in the UK via small boats, with 12,301 arrivals.”

According to your logic, everyone on the boats is a refugee or asylum seeker. This is where the blind faith argument falls down you see? So with no papers, how do you know someone on the boat isn’t Albanian?

In terms of costs quoted below, it’s costing now. The prediction went up recently for accommodation. It’s also more here pp than other G7 countries.

I agree it is public spend. Even if people prefer this chaotic, dangerous highly profitable to traffickers method, it costs.

Everyone is an asylum seeker until their claim has been processed. If their claim fails they become an illegal immigrant. It’s really not difficult.

Please can you provide some proof that "so called natives" are sitting around for generations in council houses and refusing to work. Seems like a massively racist generalisation about the working classes to me.

Anxious2024 · 16/07/2025 19:07

Well this thread has really depressed me. What is going to happen to my mixed race dc in a society where hatred for foreigners is being peddled by some in this way.

Also - I am half English half something else and grew up in a third country.

It feels as if some people would rather everyone was a “pure blood” and spoke only one language.

That’s not the reality of the world however.

Also - why shouldn’t there be shops that cater to different communities and the foods they eat etc. This is enriching for everyone and doesn’t mean there are no places which cater to English tastes etc…

I sincerely hope that Reform do not get in at the next election as I can’t imagine what kind of actions they would legitimise.

I can understand why contesting nonsense with facts would come across as antagonising for some. Some people thoroughly enjoy an echo chamber and don't like being challenged.

Now we've established the fact that asylum seekers can't claim benefits, we'll move on.

that they’re still receiving from the public purse, sometimes more than actual natives.

I pasted a link above detailing what asylum seekers are entitled to. Could you point out how it's more generous than the benefits system please?

Yes that's correct. Albanians were coming over as economic migrants and we have an agreement with Albania to deport.

According to your logic, everyone on the boats is a refugee or asylum seeker.

I didn't say that. 70% get refugee status. This information is easily available online.
