4 yrs for cutting down tree, no jail time for rape

Why are 2 men being given custodial sentences for cutting down a tree when men convicted of rape regularly get suspended sentences.

Is an important tree more important than a random woman! Justice system seems to think so.

Why are you even drawing this comparison OP? We don’t need to pit the tree against women. Women are being failed, that doesn’t need any clarification. But it’s not just ‘a tree’. Clearly. Judges don’t dish out custodial sentences to people cutting down common or garden trees.

It was just a tree. A very nice tree, and a very old tree, but just a tree.

4 years is extremely harsh. These idiots should be punished but not locked up. I actually feel sorry for them.

Indeed. 10 years of community service looking after trees would perhaps have been a better plan.

CoralOP · 15/07/2025 21:08

It was a completely shitty thing to do but in the run up to the trial I kept thinking what can they really convict them of??
like which crime can cutting a tree down be linked to, public damage maybe but not much else.
It's so much media coverage and hype over something that's incomparable to sooo many crimes that goes on daily.

Hankunamatata · 15/07/2025 21:11

4 years for a historical landmark tree is a bit insane BUT it was totally pre planned crime. Its a bloody hike to get to the tree never mind with tools

Dont feel sorry for them. One of them has previous for battery.
They committed a deliberate act of vandalism on a tree that really meant a lot to a lot of people. A landmark. A place where people proposed, scattered ashes. It wasn’t ’just a tree’ it was a protected tree on Hadrians Wall and two idiots went out in the night and chopped it down with a chainsaw.
Yes there are worse crimes. There are ALWAYS worse crimes.
They disgust me. Pair of fkn brainless stupid morons.

@Barnbrack Can you give us examples of cases where a man convicted of rape got a suspended sentence?

No it’s not.
You clearly don’t understand what that tree meant to a lot of people it was a pointless disgusting act of aggression on nature.

Thingyfanding · 15/07/2025 20:44

4 years is the right sentence for chopping down such a sacred and protected tree. But the sentence for rape should be higher.

Yes (although I'd have liked the lowlife scum to get longer).

It's not it's a "tree", as some as said, it's the status of the tree and the spiteful manner of the act. It was a place that made people happy, and knowing that they took it away. Two utter bastards.

Man cuts down tree = four years.
Man rapes twelve year old girl = three years.

Yes sentencing in this country is ridiculous. Do something that makes the Daily Mail angry like spray paint, graffiti, protesting, in famous/historic spots (especially any action aimed in any way against the ruling class/establishment or that might offend that group) and you’ll feel the full force of the law. Horrific random acts of violence against unknown members of the public = shrug. Famous shrubs and statues are considered of more value by the establishment than the vast majority of humans. Welcome to Britain.

The law needs changed. He got a sentence reduction due to law of being a young adult and got another reduction as plead guilty.
He was/is a drug addict doubt he will come out of prison any better

Thats the real depressing story. Doesn't matter the length of sentence if prisons can't rehabilitate their inmates

OonaStubbs · 15/07/2025 21:15

They should have got longer and rapists should get much longer. Build more prisons if necessary. Proper prisons, not holiday camps with free playstation and a range of free food catering to prisoners "needs". Hard labour, bread and water and regular floggings, and if you don't work, you don't eat.

BIossomtoes · 15/07/2025 21:16

Four years isn’t nearly enough. They destroyed an iconic tree that had huge sentimental value to a lot of people. Proposals, ash scattering, a place to find peace in grieving that had taken hundreds of years to grow - gone in an act of mindless vandalism.

It’s shocking to me that a tree (however old and wonderful) has led to jail time, when men looking at child abuse images don’t get that, sexual assaulters, rapists, very depressing.

No thanks

hard labour and floggings? Won’t happen

also free PlayStations is a myth

There are always worse crimes. They committed a pre planned act of vandalism then laughed about it afterwards. Justice system is there to serve as a deterrent to others too. That tree was an absolute landmark. Children went to paint pictures of it. People walked just to see it. Two idiots took that beauty away from us all. In a world where there’s little simple beauty left. It meant a huge amount for us in the north east.

I am a victim of rape and go into great detail about how fucked our police force, courts and jury’s let people like me down, it’s disgusting and something needs to change.
The incident with the tree is a separate issue and I have no sympathy, a moronic thing to do so fuck them.

It should be shocking.
.it's a tree

However important a tree it was it remains a tree.

Yet harming it is more of an issue than harming a living breathing woman.

None of the Google results you have posted relate to a conviction for rape though.

Except it wasn’t. Really amazed that people can’t see that. And it’s so sad that the cultural fabric of today’s society is so thin.

And comparing it to rape is whataboutery. Convictions and sentences for rape are ridiculous, obscene even. But reducing the sentences of the Sycamore Gap convicts won’t improve that. It’s a straw man argument.

I'm very sorry you've gone through that, however I believe there should be a benefit in drawing parallels.

To highlight how ridiculously short sentences for rapea are by comparison to sentences for criminal damage and other victimless crimes

That is absolutely disgusting and depressing I agree. Anyone committing any sex crime should do time. Hard time. With hard men.

But I also think they deserved time for cutting down that iconic historic tree.
