As a flip side to the expensive letdowns thread , has anyone bought anything low cost that’s been good ?
I got a mascara in b and m that’s great on my long blonde but thin eyelashes.
And an ineos hand wash that is actually really nice.

@ILoveCatsAndKittens have you looked at Glasses Direct? massive savings on an optician and very nice frames. not as cheap as 17 quid but I bought Transitions with all the bells and whistles and they are a bit pricey

Elasticated bands that wrap round your bedding to say what size it is. All my bedding sets are now bundled together; sheet, quilt cover and pillow cases and I know what size it is without having to unfold anything. Have to use American sizing though, but still, they have improved my life.

I buy hotel sheets and duvet covers which have coloured stitching along the side edges.

Stitching is colour coded by size. Makes for very easy folding, aligning on the bed for tucking in etc.

Micro grater and reusable beeswax food covers that you use instead of cling film

My robot mower

ok so it was £350 BUT I was paying a gardener £30 every fortnight throughout summer and have been doing that for last 4 years…. So will save me shit loads PLUS no period ever where grass is overgrown because it’s on every day.

best recent purchase

as for properly cheap item…. My bum bag! I ONLY use at the airport but so useful for putting passports and tickets

Ohhh sorry if it's already been asked but could you post a link??
I'm doing the exact same thing with our gardener at the moment.
Does it have a good battery life? Oir garden is quite long.

Hydrocolloid spot patches from Savers

HotCrossBunplease · 16/07/2025 23:22

I bought a toothpaste dispenser! Just a little single one.
amzn.eu/d/ftb9RRL
It slots very unobtrusively into a corner and the whole family are delighted! Never knew such a thing existed till this thread, thank you.

Have also bought a selfie stick/tripod with detachable remote Bluetooth shutter controller. Game changer!

This dress from Temu - £12, got it in white and navy because IT HAS POCKETS. Worn it twice and had multiple compliments each time, nobody ever comments on what I wear. Light and swishy, casual yet put together. Think I may have to order the other colours too. I live in a city and have been looking all summer for a similar dress with pockets on the high street and came up blank - closest was Nobody's Child stocked in my local M&S but they were too long, low cut and generally voluminous on my small frame. I've found that dresses from Temu/Shein fit my proportions really well and you can actually search 'with pockets' 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼 I'm 5ft 4 and can wear the dresses with flat sandals.

Can I ask what are there clothes like size wise should I size up ?

It varies but mainly things I've bought have been true to size. This one comes up a bit on the small size I'd say. Free returns so if in doubt order two sizes.

Which motion lights did you get please ? I tried this but they needed recharging all the time.and it was not worth it

Edited

I'll be sent to the dungeon for this, but Shein. Yes they need charging, but mine only seem to need it every few weeks! We obviously don't get up that much in the night, but when we do they are a godsend. 😊

Oxo01 · 17/07/2025 13:17

Two floppy magnets - one saying CLEAN and the other DIRTY. £4.
Use them on the dishwasher so everyone knows if it’s loading or needs unloading.
Such a simple thing but it works.

Great idea. Better still a husband who empties the dishwasher every morning whilst he's making our morning tea.

henlake7 · 17/07/2025 14:02

£3 t shirts from Primark.

Was looking for something to wear in the heatwaves that would be loose, cool and still give decent coverage.
I bought some in XL and they are lovely and loose, 100% cotton but very thin and cover my arms down to the elbow.
(any other time of the year I prefer my t shirts abit fitted so I now have these in XS and XL!).😄

A £7 JML de-bobbler machine from ASDA. Saved me buying new clothes - works a treat :)

I did the same but I bought the mens ones. I just found the womens too short. I tried on M, L, and XL the t-shirt got wider but not longer. I had thought the XL would drape down me. I'm not even particularly tall, 5ft 4

I really like the comfy baggy fit of the mens one tho.

Of course! I buy from here.
The basic cheaper Prima sheets have been great but all bed linen comes with the colour coding.

I even use the coloured stitching to help me hang the sheets on the line.

Duvet covers (coloured tags too) are very easy to use as well, no buttons, just a ‘long end’ which tucks under the mattress.

All designed for quick changes, I suppose.

I bought in bulk, redoing all beds.
( just adding the king size sheets a very big, we often use a double on the king. Have a measure!)

A really cheap shower cap from Tesco, cost £1.25, I use it to cover mixing bowls while dough rises. Much better than plastic bags and elastic bands.

Pliudev · 17/07/2025 19:56

Dr.Botanicals solid rose face cleanser from Debenhams. Once I'd persuaded DH it wasn't for him to use in the shower (pubes anyone?) it's been brilliant. Super soft on the skin, lovely scent and lasts ages. So good I ordered several more and haven't had to use them yet.

I tried Glasses Direct but had to return them (twice), once because the lens was loose and moving about in the frame. I think GD are probably OK for quite basic prescriptions but I have varifocals and they really didn't work for me. Plus I seem to remember the refund took a while.
