Where is the sea warm in summer?

Where can we go on holiday in August where the sea is warm and the weather will be nice and sunny? No hurricane season or monsoon season.
In the summer holidays we would usually go to Europe, like Portugal or Spain, but the sea is always too cold to go in and enjoy. The same was true when we went to Greece two summers ago.
I’m not talking like a bath hot, just not bloody freezing!
We’ve enjoyed warm sea in the Caribbean but haven’t visited in the summer months due to hurricane season.
Is there anywhere?
Also to add I’m not keen on the Middle East for travel such as Dubai.
Sorry not really AIBU, more just for traffic. Unless it’s AIBU to expect to be able to find somewhere where the sea is warm and the weather is nice in August? TIA

What do you mean by warm?

parts of the med have sea temperatures of 30 degrees C at the moment.

Champaganesupernova · 12/07/2025 22:36

Minorca, went in August and it was lovely and warm .

What is your “AIBU” question @LavendersBlueeee ?!

Baffled by this. The mediterranean is plenty warm in july & August!

The sea is warm around malta in summer.

MySweetGeorgina · 12/07/2025 22:39

Mediterranean Sea too cold?! Portugal is cold for swimming as it is the Atlantic, but somewhere like Lefkada or Kefalonia will be warm.

I mean, right now even the sea on the beaches of Sussex is warm…

If you want warm swimming pool temp.... swim in a pool. It was be a climate disaster if the sea got that warm.

LavendersBlueeee · 12/07/2025 22:39

Sorry wrong quote there!

The med is well known for being warm in the summer.. not like if you go to the Canaries and its the Atlantic.

No sweetheart I didn't I just think you are being unreasonable because the sea off greece is warm in july & august by the vast majority of people's standards.

If you want it extremely warm ie tropical you need very shallow seas nearer the equator.

TheFairyCaravan · 12/07/2025 22:41

I hate cold water but I’ve found the sea in Menorca and Kos really warm in the first week of September so I don’t understand how it’s too cold to go in and enjoy in August, tbh.

Cold water is good for you 😁

tartyflette · 12/07/2025 22:45

I used to live in a Gulf state, the sea was too warm in summer, like swimming in tepid soup. And there were sharks and jellyfish.

BastardesEverywhere · 12/07/2025 22:46

If you thought the sea in Greece in August was too cold...well, I'm not really sure you can be pleased tbh 😬

We were in Zante last August and the sea was very warm!

Thanks sweetheart 😂
I’m in the right place then if I’m BU!
Only been to Greece once in the summer months and it was very cold, so it was personal experience, but just based on one year.
Thanks for the tip of trying near the equator, that’s the kind of helpful recommendation I was after. Thanks again sweetheart! 😘

We always went to Greece in September (first two weeks of) when the schools had gone back, as it was still lovely and toasty and the sea had had all summer to warm up. It tended to be noticeably warm right at the surface and cooler further down, but still very pleasant (especially after you get really warm on the beach, it was bliss). I recall some beaches shelved so gradually that the water is very warm, even at thigh-depth.

If the Med/Aegean isn't warm enough for you, you'll have to look closer to the Equator...

tartyflette · 12/07/2025 22:48

The Indian Ocean off Durban, South Africa is warm but dangerous.
DH nearly drowned. He swam out then struggled to get back.

LavendersBlueeee · 12/07/2025 22:52

Sounds like our Greece experience wasn’t the norm. It was first week of August and was windy when we were there.
Not expecting bath hot, just not teeth grittingly cold. A decent enough temperature for a child to enjoy going in the sea as much as in the pool.
Thanks to those who have offered a recommendation to my (IMO) perfectly reasonable question.

@LavendersBlueeee Menorca might be worth looking at because at most beaches the water is very shallow so warms up well. You can go out for what seems like miles and only be up to your knees.

Sonolanona · 12/07/2025 22:55

Malta is lovely for sea swimming.

HappyMuma · 12/07/2025 22:55

We went to Menorca last summer and the sea was lovely and warm, I stayed in there for hours, just popped out every now and then for a drink and a top up of sun lotion. Also went to Cape Verde in May a few years ago and the sea there was lovely as well, even got my beach hating husband swimming!

Thunderpunt · 12/07/2025 22:58

Marina di Campo (Isola d’Elba) is like bath water… it’s very shallow for around 50 meters and very minimal tidal movement so it’s almost too warm, you have to wade/swim out further to find cooler water to cool down. Very few British there due to its inaccessibility directly from the UK.
