Where is the sea warm in summer?

Where can we go on holiday in August where the sea is warm and the weather will be nice and sunny? No hurricane season or monsoon season.
In the summer holidays we would usually go to Europe, like Portugal or Spain, but the sea is always too cold to go in and enjoy. The same was true when we went to Greece two summers ago.
I’m not talking like a bath hot, just not bloody freezing!
We’ve enjoyed warm sea in the Caribbean but haven’t visited in the summer months due to hurricane season.
Is there anywhere?
Also to add I’m not keen on the Middle East for travel such as Dubai.
Sorry not really AIBU, more just for traffic. Unless it’s AIBU to expect to be able to find somewhere where the sea is warm and the weather is nice in August? TIA

Cyprus - beautiful and warm
Greece eg Halkidiki, Kos, Rhodes, Crete, Skiathos - list is endless really

Everybodysinthehousetonight · 12/07/2025 23:09

Sicily, Kos, Ibiza, Majorca, Bodrum. All warm sea in summer when I've been. Portugal is always cold as it's the ocean. Most of Southern Spain is warm too.

Themagicclaw · 12/07/2025 23:10

We're just back from Cyprus and it was very warm. Warmer than kefalonia at a similar time of year.

Waitingfordoggo · 12/07/2025 23:15

Like PPs, if you find the Med too cold in summer then I think you’re a bit stuck. Although Portugal is surely the Atlantic Ocean, not the Med and that will be cold most of the time I should think.

Mind you, I went in the sea in the Canaries (also Atlantic) in February and it was a lovely temperature. I think my expectations of sea temps are different to yours.

Italy - Ionian Sea (Adriatic always cooler) - eg Puglia

Panda89 · 12/07/2025 23:19

Last year we were on a cruise in late August that stopped at Ibiza and Mallorca (Palma) both had beaches with sea water that was like a bath, no chill at all.

Bryonyberries · 12/07/2025 23:20

The sea is lovely and warm in Cornwall this week! No need to go abroad.

Wolfpinkola · 12/07/2025 23:22

sea is balmy in most of uk atm 19 degrees here in Southsea

Runnersandtoms · 12/07/2025 23:23

Maldives for warm and shallow water.

Generally I'd agree with others that the Med should warm in summer. However we went to Marseille a couple of years ago, it was bizarrely freezing, colder than at home (we swim here in England all the time and found it colder there). So maybe it depends where and on the wind direction or similar.

Venalopolos · 12/07/2025 23:31

I’m just back from Cyprus and the (incredibly clear) sea was not at all cold there. Cooler than the air, but actually warm in some of the shallower bays.

Jamesblonde2 · 12/07/2025 23:49

Greece, Ionian islands. Always lovely and warm in the summer.

Remaker · 12/07/2025 23:50

We took our kids to Mallorca in August when they were little and the sea was like a bath. I’ve experienced similar in the south of France on the Côte d’Azur.

CheeseWisely · 12/07/2025 23:53

Portugal sea will always be cold, it’s the Atlantic. IME of Balearic Islands in August the sea is like a warm bath, certainly a lot warmer than the hotel pool.

tartyflette · 12/07/2025 22:45

I used to live in a Gulf state, the sea was too warm in summer, like swimming in tepid soup. And there were sharks and jellyfish.

Same here those that could left for summer as soon as school finished.

we go to the Balearics alot and it’s plenty warm enough, although slightly put off by the snakes this year

tartyflette · 13/07/2025 00:28

Bermuda. Pink sand beaches and warm sea. Fairly spendy though.

MAFSQueen · 13/07/2025 00:29

We avoid Portugal and the Canaries.

The sea in the med is warm?!

or Indian Ocean but it’s not a good time to go.

minipie · 13/07/2025 00:30

Most of Greece will have seas as warm as you describe in summer. You were unlucky I think.

Steer clear of the Cyclades which can be windy in August especially, there are also a few known cold spots such as Paleokastritsa on corfu (to do with currents I believe)? But these are the exception

Crispynoodle · 13/07/2025 00:34

Everywhere at anytime if you buy a wetsuit! I live in NI and wouldn’t be without mine including the boots, gloves and individual bouy!

Crispynoodle · 13/07/2025 00:36

Sorry I misread! I thought UK which would have needed a wetsuit! To make up for it I shall recommend Croatia! I lived in the Adriatic Sea last summer

LemondrizzleShark · 13/07/2025 00:38

OP, if you find the Mediterranean icy cold in August, unfortunately you are going to have to go long haul - I’ve dived in the Red Sea many times and it isn’t significantly warmer than the Med, so Egypt is out.

This site suggests India and Thailand should be a few degrees warmer - again I have been to both and while the air temp was obviously warmer, I didn’t notice a big difference in sea temps. But perhaps I wasn’t there at the right time of year. Or you could try the Caribbean (including Mexican coast), Pacific Islands, Zanzibar etc.

Yeah you need to look at which sea. Portugal is the Atlantic which is a massive body of water etc, so the sea there will be chilly. But I am really surprised that you found anywhere on the med that cold. South of France, Spain, Greece, Italy- all lovely (med is small and still). Mind you this time last year we went to North Norfolk, Folkestone and the Channel Islands and the sea was beautiful- could have happily stayed in for hours.

SnowFrogJelly · 13/07/2025 00:59

We went to Turkey in October and the sea was warm

LemondrizzleShark · 13/07/2025 01:01

A UK swimming pool is generally around 26C, the kids’ teaching pool is generally warmer at 28-30C. The Med in summer is 24-27C, which is why your children found it cold if they are only used to a leisure centre teaching pool (and why the adults on here think it is fine).

Use the sea temperatures website above to find places where the sea temperature is well over 30C, and your children should be happy.

Oriunda · 13/07/2025 01:01

It’s the sea that’s important; we’re always in Salento (the bottom tip of Puglia) in summer. The west coast is the Ionian and is much warmer than the eastern Adriatic, plus is more sheltered as it’s the gulf of Taranto. Aside from some rocky areas where the sea is a protected marine park, the sea off the beaches is warm.

Bjorkdidit · 13/07/2025 03:13

There's no way the sea around Greece was 'teeth grittingly cold' in August.

You must be misremembering the time of year or location or respond differently to most people to water temperatures.

I swim in the sea, lakes and unheated pools in the UK and Europe between May and September/October and take a keen interest in water temperature and am a bit soft when it comes to being cold. The Med is lovely and warm in August.
