Where is the sea warm in summer?

LavendersBlueeee · 12/07/2025 22:35

Where can we go on holiday in August where the sea is warm and the weather will be nice and sunny? No hurricane season or monsoon season.
In the summer holidays we would usually go to Europe, like Portugal or Spain, but the sea is always too cold to go in and enjoy. The same was true when we went to Greece two summers ago.
I’m not talking like a bath hot, just not bloody freezing!
We’ve enjoyed warm sea in the Caribbean but haven’t visited in the summer months due to hurricane season.
Is there anywhere?
Also to add I’m not keen on the Middle East for travel such as Dubai.
Sorry not really AIBU, more just for traffic. Unless it’s AIBU to expect to be able to find somewhere where the sea is warm and the weather is nice in August? TIA

Gosh I swam in the sea from Spain in May and Mallorca in June last year and it was plenty warm enough. August will be warmer.

JMSA · 13/07/2025 05:52

Sicily

Caspianberg · 13/07/2025 06:01

The later in the summer you go, the more time it’s had to warm up.

So last week August is your best bet for school holidays

Have you considered lake holidays? Swiss/ Italian/ Austrian lakes will all
be warm in summer as
long as you aren’t at a high altitude one. The will be 26-28 peak summer. Maybe warmer if smaller lake

FigTreeInEurope · 13/07/2025 06:12

We live on the Salento in Italy, and in August the sea is like a warm bath. You have to tiptoe over three thousand tourist, sardine like on the beach to get to it though.

Jane958 · 13/07/2025 06:21

Kenya or Zanzibar
Although I am not sure what you mean about nowhere in the monsoon season. I have been to Sri Lanka several times i the monsoon season and it was fine. Yes, it rained heavily, mostly in the evening or at night, but not for hours and the rain was warm.
If you wanted hit and dry, the east coast of Sri Lanka at this time of year is not subject to monsoon conditions.

Any island in the Indian ocean.

ViciousCurrentBun · 13/07/2025 07:05

I have swum at 3 different places off Cornwall over the last week, sea temp was 14 degrees which was fine for me. Warmest place Ihave ever swum was Florida and Kenya, in Europe it was Majorca.

shirtyshirt · 13/07/2025 07:31

I find the Med cold, only the caribbean works for me unfortunately.

shirtyshirt · 13/07/2025 07:32

I mean, right now even the sea on the beaches of Sussex is warm

I guess everyone has different definitions of warm.

shirtyshirt · 13/07/2025 07:36

Bora Bora etc is lovely and warm

katienana · 13/07/2025 07:39

I think your Greece experience was an anomaly. The last few years I've found Turkey and Gran Canaria to be lovely and warm to swim in the sea.

Clockface222 · 13/07/2025 07:44

I have swum in the Carribean, med and Indian ocean. Between the 3 locations I find the main factor influencing the temperature is the water depth. You can swim off an atoll in the Maldives where the water is deep and it will be much colder than shallow waters in the med. Just look for a location in the med with shallow waters e.g many of the Greek islands have sandy sheltered lagoons and it will be really warm.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/07/2025 07:50

We were swimming in the Med on France last week and it was fine. That said I don't like bath warm sea - it creeps me out . In my view sea should be a bit chilly - all the more refreshing on a hot day!

In Europe September/October is the time for warm sea as it has spent all summer warming up.

yes, I like it then.

The sea was lovely and warm in Tunisia last August

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 13/07/2025 08:27

Countries bordering the Mediterranean

CocoPlum · 13/07/2025 08:41

We went to Corfu in August and the sea was so warm! The Ionian, I think??

ObliviousCoalmine · 13/07/2025 08:44

It’s currently like bath water in Devon and Cornwall so god knows what you’re after.

Surely just stick to pools if you find the sea intolerably cold?

😆😆 Hoe cold do you have your baths?

NegroniMacaroni · 13/07/2025 09:05

Puglia and Cilento seas have been very comfortable when we've been in June and September. Spiaggia di Torre Guaceto (near Ostuni), Padula Bianca (north of Gallipoli), Marina di Ascea (Cilento). I think they get rammed in August though with all the Italians on holiday.

The issue I've found with very warm seas is that it brings problems like jellyfish, making it impossible to swim. We know two people that got stung in Sicily.

WolfFoxHare · 13/07/2025 09:08

Mauritius, west coast. It won’t be blazing hot there during our summer months as it’s their winter, but usually it’s fairly dry and around 25-26°c. The sea should still be warm especially in the lagoons.

Sounds like our Greece experience wasn’t the norm. It was first week of August and was windy when we were there.
Not expecting bath hot, just not teeth grittingly cold. A decent enough temperature for a child to enjoy going in the sea as much as in the pool.
Thanks to those who have offered a recommendation to my (IMO) perfectly reasonable question.

We always went to Skegness in the summer as kids and happily went in the sea every day. I lived in Greece for several years and the sea was really warm for months, especially the shallower water.

Are there medical reasons why your child needs the sea to be really warm?

I’m not in Devon or Cornwall right now, so can’t comment on that.
No thanks, we would just like to know where the sea might be warm in August. Have had some helpful recommendations here.

No medical reasons and doesn’t need it to be warm, just hasn’t been anywhere where the sea is warm before so was looking for recommendations for where it might be over the school summer holidays.
Thanks for the recommendation of Greece, but I think we will give Skegness a miss!

Go to Kos in Greece. The sea was 32 in August. Where were you in Greece?
