Where is the sea warm in summer?

Where can we go on holiday in August where the sea is warm and the weather will be nice and sunny? No hurricane season or monsoon season.
In the summer holidays we would usually go to Europe, like Portugal or Spain, but the sea is always too cold to go in and enjoy. The same was true when we went to Greece two summers ago.
I’m not talking like a bath hot, just not bloody freezing!
We’ve enjoyed warm sea in the Caribbean but haven’t visited in the summer months due to hurricane season.
Is there anywhere?
Also to add I’m not keen on the Middle East for travel such as Dubai.
Sorry not really AIBU, more just for traffic. Unless it’s AIBU to expect to be able to find somewhere where the sea is warm and the weather is nice in August? TIA

I used to live in a Gulf state, the sea was too warm in summer, like swimming in tepid soup. And there were sharks and jellyfish.

Yes! And sometimes the sea was full of minute baby jellyfish - transparent so you couldn’t see them but would soon feel lots of teeny little stings. The sand would be far too hot to walk on with bare feet, too.

Occasionally I see holidays to Gulf states in August advertised - they can seem cheap for what they are, but I feel sorry for anyone who hasn’t a clue what it’s like in that part of the world in high summer, who might be tempted.
It’s really not like high summer in the Med!

South China Sea is pretty warm.

we swam at one of the beaches at the back of Hong kong island.

Went to Sardinia last year year in august! Omg the heat and humidity. They were having a heatwave which made ours look mild and sea is very warm. Thank God for air con everywhere lol no probs with hot villa we hired. The houses are cool and air con all over

I am similar in mindset to you, OP, and like to swim in 25 degrees and above in the sea and 30C in a pool! We were in croatia last month and at 22C I could not get in.

Google the water temps both current and average, for where you want to go. The med is definitely warms up over the summer for short haul.

SoSoLong · 13/07/2025 10:06

Cyprus, Turkey, Greece. Also the Black Sea is warm at that time of year, so Bulgaria and Romania. The Adriatic is a bit cooler but perfectly pleasant - Croatia, Montenegro.

Go to Kos in Greece. The sea was 32 in August. Where were you in Greece?

Kos! 😄 Maybe we were just there at an off time. It was nice weather, but windy and the sea was cold, but then so were the (unheated) swimming pools.

Puglia and Cilento seas have been very comfortable when we've been in June and September. Spiaggia di Torre Guaceto (near Ostuni), Padula Bianca (north of Gallipoli), Marina di Ascea (Cilento). I think they get rammed in August though with all the Italians on holiday.

The issue I've found with very warm seas is that it brings problems like jellyfish, making it impossible to swim. We know two people that got stung in Sicily.

We’re in Salento all summer. The lido we go to is Padula Bianca. Not my favourite, as it’s packed, but it ticks the boxes as far as sea warmth because it’s very shallow. If I get some alone time, I take myself off to Porto Selvaggio, which has the purest water but is freezing cold initially.

My DH hates the cold sea, so he loves it at Padula Bianca.

Thanks sweetheart 😂
I’m in the right place then if I’m BU!
Only been to Greece once in the summer months and it was very cold, so it was personal experience, but just based on one year.
Thanks for the tip of trying near the equator, that’s the kind of helpful recommendation I was after. Thanks again sweetheart! 😘

We go to Corfu a lot. Most of the beaches, the sea is lovely in August, but In Paleokastritsa it’s soooo cold so if that’s where you went I completely understand 😆

AveAtqueVale · 13/07/2025 10:47

We went to Mexico last summer - Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun - and the sea was very warm.

sashh · 13/07/2025 11:40

In Mauritius, at least where I was staying, there was a sort of lagoon, it wasn't very deep and was warm. Walking in to the sea it felt warm, on the way out it felt hot on my feet.

There were not really waves, they were out beyond the rocks.

So rather than a country look for somewhere that has, as a PP said a shallow sea look for a resort with something like that.

KellySeveride · 13/07/2025 11:44

Cyprus. I go every year in the summer and the sea is lovely as are the swimming pools.

Ahhh! So we went to Kos in 2020 and stayed in Kardamena. The sea on that side was warm and calm and there was a gentle breeze on beaches. Last year we stayed in Tingaki, on that side of the island the sea was rougher and the beaches were very windy.

We had a car so spent our time going to the beaches where the sea was calm and warm.

No medical reasons and doesn’t need it to be warm, just hasn’t been anywhere where the sea is warm before so was looking for recommendations for where it might be over the school summer holidays.
Thanks for the recommendation of Greece, but I think we will give Skegness a miss!

I wouldn't go to Skegness now if you paid me - I was simply pointing out that children are usually happy to go in the sea in the UK, where it's quite cold!

rockingthekasbah · 13/07/2025 12:47

OP - when the boat sank off Sicily a year ago, the sea was 31 degrees. The temp of the water around France and Spain (med side, natch) are 27/28 degrees. These are temps not seen before

Arrrrggghhhhh · 13/07/2025 12:50

Cyprus is lovely and warm

Daisydoesnt · 13/07/2025 12:51

Wolfpinkola · 12/07/2025 23:22

sea is balmy in most of uk atm 19 degrees here in Southsea

The water in our municipal pool is about 27 (and feels cold when it gets below 26) so please don’t try and convince me that 19 is “balmy”!

TaborlinTheGreat · 13/07/2025 12:58

If you found it too cold in Greece, maybe your expectations of sea temperature are a bit unrealistic! If the air temperature is hot, it's always going to feel cold getting in the sea - maybe you should try the Lake District Grin

MrsCarson · 13/07/2025 13:13

We used to go to Majorca each October and the water was lovely and warm.

BlueberryPup · 13/07/2025 13:21

If you enjoyed Caribbean temps but would like to avoid natural disasters, check out Brazil. The warmest sea I ever had was in João Pessoa (Brazilian northeast) in March. It was actually hot. It is technically winter in August but I just checked today's temps and at 9am, it was 27 degrees, so definitely warm. Other parts of the Brazilian northeast are also gorgeous, but if you actually want a warm sea, João Pessoa is the spot.

bookworm60 · 13/07/2025 13:24

The sea around Mallorca was plenty warm enough for us to swim in a month ago so I’m sure it will be in August

HerdMentality · 13/07/2025 13:26

The sea is definitely warm off the south coast of Italy and around Sicily. Worryingly warm from an environmental point of view.

Kenya or Zanzibar
Although I am not sure what you mean about nowhere in the monsoon season. I have been to Sri Lanka several times i the monsoon season and it was fine. Yes, it rained heavily, mostly in the evening or at night, but not for hours and the rain was warm.
If you wanted hit and dry, the east coast of Sri Lanka at this time of year is not subject to monsoon conditions.

Edited

“hit and dry”? Oh dear, and that’s only one of three mistakes that jump out during a quick scan of your post.

Can I suggest that you pay more attention to your own accuracy, and rather less focus on others’ mistakes?

Anywhere with geothermal waters. Ischia is gorgeous.
