Is Stephen Fry a repulsive, condescending misogynistic turd?

I realised on the first thread about lovely Stephen Fry, that I should have put an AIBU. I’m interested to know the wider view, beyond us sex realists on the FWR board.

So if you’ve got time, take a flick through the last thread (link attached), and using that plus your existing knowledge of the man, what do you think?

YABU - No he’s lovely.

YANBU - Yes, he is at the very least, a misogynistic wanker.

Charm does not equal goodness.

See hundreds of other corrupt ex-public school boys for further examples.

I don’t really care about his character. I have spent one evening with him. It was fun, and I haven’t really looked beyond that.

Well that’s alright then isn’t it? Who cares what anybody is really like so long as they amuse you?

Treesarenotforeating · 12/07/2025 15:09

He’s a slimy/ smarmy 😒

Mirabai · 12/07/2025 15:15

Yes. He always was. I called it 20 years ago.

ruffler45 · 12/07/2025 16:04

well past his sell by date, who actually cares what he says anymore

SarfLondonLad · 12/07/2025 16:12

I could not agree more OP. Man has an overblown opinion of his self-worth boosted by a load of second-rate hacks.

I understand the late Rik Mayall's opinion of Mr Fry was not repeatable in polite company.

GreenWheat · 12/07/2025 16:18

He certainly seems to have a very odd relationship with sex. I still remember a most disturbing sex scene involving a horse in one of his books.

IcedPurple · 12/07/2025 16:30

I once heard Stephen Fry described as a non-intelligent person's idea of an intelligent person. I thought that was pretty much spot on. He's a pretty banal thinker on a good day.

Screamingabdabz · 12/07/2025 14:19

Yes on top of the women hating he’s also an out of touch champagne socialist hypocrite. He’s utterly loathsome.

This.

MaggieBsBoat · 12/07/2025 16:34

He’s a creepy fucker. Being gay doesn’t absolve you of being a creepy fucker when you marry someone that age when you are already an old man.

Being clever also doesn’t make you better than anyone. He often forgets that.

Gives me the heebeegeebees.

The male rapist in Baby Reindeer had the RL initials SF and the focus was put on the stalker because the rapist was still quite powerful in the media and performing world.

Well, who cares if he glorifies pedophiles and mocks sexually abused children then.

As long as you like him.

EmBear91 · 12/07/2025 16:36

Anyone repulsed by JK Rowling is pretty morally decent in my book.

Anyone repulsed by JK Rowling is pretty morally decent in my book.

Or, anyone disliked by the pederast, child rape apologist Stephen Fry is almost certainly a decent person.

He tells them to shop at Sainsbury's in that patronising AF voiceover he does.

Well, as he once said, "It keeps the scum out of Waitrose"

Stephen Fry and his DH. Posted without comment.

That’s an appalling age difference.

TwoToots · 12/07/2025 14:22

I don’t really understand why he’s famous. Some skits, some poor acting thirty years ago. Regardless, I don’t have any admiration for him.

About a decade ago, you could barely turn on your telly without his pompous mug staring back at you. He's not quite as ubiquitous now, but like you, I've never understood just what his appeal is meant to be. Just goes to show that a posh voice and a Cambridge degree can take you a long way.

nomas · 12/07/2025 16:54

I imagine he is as annoying as the character he played in that movie with Meg Ryan, ‘IQ’.

MissMarplesNiece · 12/07/2025 17:01

He's so pompous and full of self- regard. Somehow he's managed to position himself as some kind of public intellectual. I don't know how, I suppose it says a lot about the calibre of those who've been impressed by him.

What does Stephen Fry do to improve the lives of those less fortunate than him?

Which was, very obviously, a joke.

Jeez. You really can get away with anything if you say it in naice enough tones.

I'm glad he's finally come to his senses and realised just how obsessive and awful JK is! He's always been a person I admire.

Yes - isn’t she awful for saying women need and deserve single sex spaces, single sex rape crisis groups/centres, single sex sports, single sex prison cells, @VioletsandDill. What a terrible person she is. She should be happy with male rapists in the same cells as vulnerable women, with male bodied individuals exposing their genitalia to women and girls without their consent, with female sports people losing awards and medals to people who, have the massive physical advantages conferred by male puberty.

Women should just shut up, be kind, and let the menz have all the things feminists fought so hard for.

Or maybe she is right and women and girls do have rights that should be respected.

ExitPursuedByABare · 12/07/2025 17:13

Someone on Twix wrote recently that Fry claimed sitting his car feeling a bit sad was a suicide attempt. For everyone else it’s Monday morning.

It was on QI, I disremember the context, but it raised a wry smile.
