To leave poorly 9 year old at home while I do school run?

I have a 9 year old dd (year 4) who’s off school today with a stomach bug.
I wouldn’t dream of usually leaving her alone but if she’s not well would you leave her for 20 minutes while getting the youngest from school?
I trust her and I know she’d be happy to stay here.

Not at 9 no, can a neighbour pop in for a bit and look after or fetch your other DC from school? xx

JMSA · 11/07/2025 14:20

I would.

Hollyhobbi · 11/07/2025 14:20

I would.

She could walk up with me if it comes to it. I just know she’d rather stay here.

I leave my 9yo at home while doing school run. I know I’ll be around 30-40 mins so I set a timer and say “if I’m not back when it goes off, then call me. And if I don’t answer then go to the neighbour and tell them what’s happening”

Lavender14 · 11/07/2025 14:21

Could a parent you know from your other child's class drop your child home on their way?

I wouldn't at 9 and unwell just incase they don't make it to the bathroom or become more unwell after you leave. I'd be inclined to put a towel/ bag down in the car and a basin and just do the run with them if you can't find anyone else.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 11/07/2025 14:21

If there isn't a risk that she will be sick everywhere then I would.

ThePithyFinch · 11/07/2025 14:21

I would. Do you have a landline so that she could call you if needed?

MarilynSays · 11/07/2025 14:21

No. In the past I have taken my son with me in the car, along with a sick bowl and towel/wipes. Just a short ten minute journey, but I didn't want to risk leaving him.

notacooldad · 11/07/2025 14:21

I did with mine, once the sickness had stopped and they were just 'off'
I wouodnt if there was likely to be sickness and/ or diarrhea

Scottishgirl85 · 11/07/2025 14:21

Yes, if you can trust her and she will be happy. Can you leave a phone with her?

Palsywalsy · 11/07/2025 14:23

Personally, in the circumstances i would with a stomach bug. She can’t be expected to be away from toilet.

springballs · 11/07/2025 14:26

She doesn’t have a phone, well she doesn’t have a phone with a SIM card and I can’t drive up because it’s only 10 minutes walk each way and in the city centre and I wouldn’t get parked closer than our house.
She’s not had d or v since this morning and is just sitting at home.

I'm leaving DS8 at home while I'm picking DD up from nursery. He's on the sofa, watching tv. Our neighbours are at home and he knows to go over there if there's a real issue in the 10 minutes that I'm gone for.
We're abroad, though...him walking home from school by himself takes longer than that...

HowtoDothisagain · 11/07/2025 14:27

I would especially as she is likely feeling awful and it’s very hot today.

Everydayimhuffling · 11/07/2025 14:28

I would. Make sure they know what to do if you don't come home within a certain time

ShamrockShenanigans · 11/07/2025 14:31

Yes, as long as she's stopped being sick.

Confabulations · 11/07/2025 14:34

I would. Far too hot to take a sick child out.

JonSnowedUnder · 11/07/2025 14:35

She's just on the cusp of a definite yes, but I'd still leave her. If you can get someone to pick up your other DC that would be better but if not and your alternative is getting your sick DC to walk then I wouldn't do that.

Jollyjoy · 11/07/2025 14:35

I would.

TheyreLikeUsButRichAndThin · 11/07/2025 14:36

Our 9 year old is left often (well, he’s 10 now but was still left at 9) - he prefers it and loves the independence. My concern would be that yours would choke on their vomit and die while you’re out! On a usual day I would have no problem with leaving a healthy 9 year old.!

ThePoshUns · 11/07/2025 14:37

I would leave her. 9 year olds are pretty sensible and it isn’t for long.

LeedsZebra90 · 11/07/2025 14:38

I would leave my 8 yo if the neighbours were home in case of an emergency, but you know your child. My child doesnt have a phone so i wouldnt leave them if the neighbours werent around. (Obviously depends how ill they are).

Jesswebster01 · 11/07/2025 14:40

I have a rind camera in my 9 yo daughters room so if I ever need to just take dogs our for 5 mins and she can't come say she's asleep I can watch her whole time I'm out. I would get her a sim card or just have a spare phone at home incase you need to get on touch with her but if you had a camera you could watch her and speak to her through it anyway. Doesn't help you today but just for in future they are cheap also.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/07/2025 14:47

Yes I would. She’s 9 not 3.
