To leave poorly 9 year old at home while I do school run?

I have a 9 year old dd (year 4) who’s off school today with a stomach bug.
I wouldn’t dream of usually leaving her alone but if she’s not well would you leave her for 20 minutes while getting the youngest from school?
I trust her and I know she’d be happy to stay here.

Yes I'd leave a 9yo in this situation, without a thought.

DisforDarkChocolate · 11/07/2025 15:30

I would, walking in this weather is bad enough, being ill too. No way.

Personally I wouldn’t but that’s just because my ‘just 20 minutes’ has never been that, I’ve been held up in traffic, teacher came over also our car is unreliable. I’d always chuck them in the car with a basin and some tissues just in case

The OP ( and by default the sick child) would be walking. So should she be carted down the Street with a bucket in tow?

Of course not, shocked you’d think it was ok.

Why isn't it.? What would you actually do then? Walk ill child out in this heat ?

Weird to assume school run = driving

AvidJadeShaker · 11/07/2025 15:35

I would.

newdaynewnam · 11/07/2025 15:36

I leave my 8 year old alone for ip to 30 minutes. i usually have FaceTime open on an ipad in the house and my phone do he can talk to me (i walk!).
He knows what to do in an emergency as well

stayathomer · 11/07/2025 15:41

Ah ok sorry didn’t realise it was walking.

SabrinaSt · 11/07/2025 15:43

I would and I have done recently - school is a 10 minute walk each way and I left him with my iPad so he could FaceTime me or my sister who lives up the road if needed.

Lemonem · 11/07/2025 15:45

I would

Now you know that what would you do?

SnooperLoopy · 11/07/2025 15:48

Our 9 year old is left often (well, he’s 10 now but was still left at 9) - he prefers it and loves the independence. My concern would be that yours would choke on their vomit and die while you’re out! On a usual day I would have no problem with leaving a healthy 9 year old.!

I'm pretty sure that choking on your own vomit only happens if you are otherwise incapacitated (drunk, drugs, unconscious). The usual reflexive response to vomiting is to face downwards, to keep airways clear and you'd only not do that if you weren't able to wake up. 9 year old will be fine for 30 mins sitting next to a bucket.

HostaCentral · 11/07/2025 15:48

Absolutely I would. How cruel to chuck an unwell child in a car in this heat. Much better cool and calm at home.

HostaCentral · 11/07/2025 15:50

Just noticed it's walking, an even stronger reason to leave her at home.

WhereIsMyJumper · 11/07/2025 16:00

I absolutely would. Poor thing, leave her in the house where she is cool and resting. I’m sure she will be fine.

Squishymallows · 11/07/2025 16:01

No I would get a friend or neighbour to collect the kids from
school

BogRollBOGOF · 11/07/2025 16:02

The risk of an otherwise healthy 9yo of normal development choking on vomit is less than the risk of becoming dehydrated on a 20 min walk in an amber heat warning.
(Assuming OP is in that zone of the country)

And if u didn't have a convenient friend or neighbour to do so. Most people would be at work. Didn't think schools let random people collect kids these days anyway

Abra1t · 11/07/2025 16:04

I have done this in the past. I trusted my children to be sensible and they were.

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 11/07/2025 16:10

Of course! I'm really surprised people can't leave their 9yo's for short periods alone.

I have a rind camera in my 9 yo daughters room so if I ever need to just take dogs our for 5 mins and she can't come say she's asleep I can watch her whole time I'm out. I would get her a sim card or just have a spare phone at home incase you need to get on touch with her but if you had a camera you could watch her and speak to her through it anyway. Doesn't help you today but just for in future they are cheap also.

I find this quite disturbing tbh...you monitor her all the time, that isn't even allowed in prison you know...

Apart from anything else I really hope your cyber security is on point as you are literally opening up some creepy weirdo to access videos of her getting changed, and once on the internet that can be there for ever.

MageQueen · 11/07/2025 16:24

I wouldn't think twice about this... if she's happy.

As an FYI - if you have an Alexa, she can call you.

This! That poor girl

Ibelievetheworldisburningtotheground · 11/07/2025 16:26

Fully depends on the 9 year old.

I would.

polarsystem · 11/07/2025 16:36

I would have no qualms doing this, providing she’s mature enough to sit and wait.
