To think this is the start of type 1 diabetes

Hand hold please.

My 13 year old son informed me tonight that he wet the bed last night.

This has never happened before.

His late father had Type 1 diabetes which started around this age.

My son also has a sore tummy (that comes and goes) and sore calves (that come and go).

He seems to have low mood also.

He's always been really thin.

My husband (his stepdad) is driving to A&E with him right now. I’m staying home with the other 4 children. (I can’t drive).

I’m autistic and scared. I’m so worried for him. AI said he is highly likely to be diagnosed given his symptoms and family history, and he’s likely to be urgently admitted to hospital.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

Did you call 111 first?

TheFairPoet · 10/07/2025 00:16

But none of those things are symptoms of type 1 diabetes? You’re taking a 13 year old to a&e because sometimes they have a stomach ache and wet the bed once?

TheFairPoet · 10/07/2025 00:18

The main signs of Type 1 are excessive thirst and urination, fatigue, and sometimes fruity smelling breath. You haven’t described any of those symptoms?

NeuroSpicyCat · 10/07/2025 00:19

God no. My experience with them is that they say they will phone you back and 4 hours later they phone you back and say to go to A&E anyway.

If AI is correct, this is a medical emergency

My daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in May 24. She had lost half a stone in five months, was crazy thirsty, very tired and was eating sweets and crazy amounts of sugar. She didn’t wet the bed but it is listed as one of the symptoms. My daughter didn’t end up in DKA. She was in hospital for three days and then we went home. She uses a Libre 3 sensor and injections. You are doing the right thing getting him checked. ❤️. I waited overnight which I now know was the wrong thing. When I went to the GP and her bloods and ketones were checked we were sent straight to hospital.

And his biological father had type 1 diabetes.

When I put all this into AI (Google Gemini) it freaked out and said he needs urgent medical attention.

Sudden bed wetting is a sign of type 1, right?

I know several kids with it. It's treatable for most people with medication and dietary changes. I wouldn't have considered it an emergency unless he was having issues remaining conscious.

They are both a symptom of type 1 diabetes.

I do think that it would have been better to wait until morning, unless he was in pain that he couldn't sleep through. But you should start to get a diagnosis. Fasting bloods are the ideal and he might get referred to the pediatric diabetes team. So might not get admitted.

From what you've said, he wet the bed one time. That's something that can happen to anyone. Has he experienced increased urination overall? Increased thirst?

No, it’s not. And whilst there is a genetic component to type 1, type 2 is actually far more hereditary. The majority of type 1 diabetics don’t have any direct relations with T1D.

Most people don't have a genetic factor, it plays less of a role than was once thought. He also has the symptoms of dehydration and a subsequent UTI.

I asked him about excessive thirst and urination and he said no. But the sudden bed wetting? 😥

Thank you. I’m so sad and scared for him.

Do you have other family members with type 1?

OP posts:
TheFairPoet · 10/07/2025 00:26

bed wetting on its own is NOT A SIGN. Excessive thirst is a sign, and children who suddenly drink a lot of water are more likely to bed wet, so you can get bed wetting as a byproduct, but OP’s son is not experiencing excessive thirst and increased drinking?

You are completely incorrect . Stomach ache can be a sign of raised blood ketones / ketoacidosis and bed wetting in a previous dry child is also common in diabetes . Children with a parent with diabetes are also at increased risk of developing T1D .

x2boys · 10/07/2025 00:26

Yes you are doing the right thing getting it checked out my son was diagnosed in DKA.
He actually has type 3c diabetes caused by acute necrotizing, pancreatitis but he's treated as type 1

no, I am not. OP has described an occasional relapsing and demoting stomach ache. This would not be the case with ketoacidosis. Bed wetting on its own is NOT an indication of T1D. Excessive thirst is, and the increase in fluid intake can cause bedwetting but a single occurrence of bedwetting with absolutely no thirst is not. T1D has a genetic component but it’s not strongly hereditary. The majority of people with T1D have no immediate relatives with the condition.

Testerical · 10/07/2025 00:29

AI is not very good at medical diagnoses. If it was, we could get rid of GPs.

it has a confirmatory bias. If it senses you are asking about something you suspect you know the answer to, it will give you an answer playing to your suspicions.

I hope your child is Ok -let us know xx

I men it probably isn't but my son had acute necrotizing, pancreatitis which had on and off stomach pain t destroyed his pancreas and he's now a type 3c treated as type 1 Diabetic it's good the Op.is getting her son checked out.
