To think this is the start of type 1 diabetes

Hand hold please.

My 13 year old son informed me tonight that he wet the bed last night.

This has never happened before.

His late father had Type 1 diabetes which started around this age.

My son also has a sore tummy (that comes and goes) and sore calves (that come and go).

He seems to have low mood also.

He's always been really thin.

My husband (his stepdad) is driving to A&E with him right now. I’m staying home with the other 4 children. (I can’t drive).

I’m autistic and scared. I’m so worried for him. AI said he is highly likely to be diagnosed given his symptoms and family history, and he’s likely to be urgently admitted to hospital.

Has anyone been in a similar situation?

And a mother who is possibly rather on the over-anxious side. Which AI absolutely did nothing to help.

Exactly.

16 mins from checking in to blood sugar results. Crikey, what part of the country are you in for that NHS service

It will be a finger prick test it gives results immediately.

Pricelessadvice · 10/07/2025 07:21

Surely you should have just booked a GP appointment to discuss your concerns and gone from there?
Why are you clogging up A+E? Is it an emergency? No it’s not.
People like you are the reason the NHS is struggling so much.

I am sick to death of people abusing the system.

millymollymoomoo · 10/07/2025 07:26

@Pricelessadvice agree!

Highly improbable/ really?

Yes highly improbable

Cruel messages?
It is not 'cruel' to point out that A&E was NOT necessary. This was not a medical emergency and should have addressed with a GP.
Now that there has been confirmation that A&E treatment is not necessary, surely they can leave and get some sleep before tackling any potential issues tomorrow

It could have been DKA can kill a person.

If your child does show the symptoms of diabetes then it’s important to seek medical attention asap. OP’s DS doesn’t have diabetes symptoms though.

Stomach ache is a textbook symptom

For countless other things too and it's not a classic symptom.

MyOtherProfile · 10/07/2025 07:31

I hope your son is ok.

A few years ago people used to say Google is not medically trained. I think we need to remember that neither is AI and both can send us spiralling unnecessarily.

ArmySurplusHamster · 10/07/2025 07:32

How humiliating for the son. Daft overreaction on the OP’s part.

Stomach PAIN can be a symptom. An occasional stomach ache that comes and goes as OP describes is not.

Does type 1 diabetes deteriorate quickly? Could gp have tested in the morning? Anyway hope all is ok.

It can do ,my son went from feeling off in the morning to collapsing by 7 in the evening, he.was in critical care within an hour.

It could have been DKA can kill a person.

Aside from a stomache ache which is present in any number of other conditions there was no symptoms of DKA.

I am T1 diabetic, treated with the Libre2 sensors and insulin injections 4 times a day.

FGS do not wait until soneone has gone unconscious before seeking medical help, this could lead to coma and death. I have lived with this condition nearly my whole life so I know what I'm talking about.

You sought help from A&E OP, and that was the right thing to do and especially as your sons' father has T1D which, ironically is heredetory. People with T1 carry the gene for their condition. T2 is caused by eating too much, their bodies can't produce enough insulin to cover tge weight gain.

T2 is more hereditary than T1. Having a parent with T1 only increases your chances of having T1 by 1-9%.

I’m sorry you don’t have a good GP. If OP preferred she could have returned to A&E the next day but sitting for hours in the middle of the night with a stable patient whose blood test was NAD is just daft.

I didn’t say l didn’t have a good GP. The norm for most of us is to try to ring in at 8am for a telephone consultation. Once all appointments are taken you’re signposted to A&E or walk in centres.

OP’s son was triaged and asked to wait to see a doctor. It was a two hour wait. If they had done any of the things you suggested the wait would likely have been much longer. Walking out of A&E after you have been asked to stay and told that more tests are likely is the stupidest of advice in the circumstances. A finger prick blood glucose test only gives your levels at the time it’s taken. An HbA1c gives a more accurate overall picture and DS was in the best place to get it, and any diagnosis as a result.

That's why patients are to go through 111, either by phone or online. Or contact the GP during normal hours. As we all have to share NHS care, it's annoying when people are feckless and OP is being obtuse saying in every other post 'AI made me do it'. AI diagnosed my child.

I am all for listening to your gut feeling where health is ragged but here she blindly trust AI and uses shared resources that are already underfunded based on what some random AI tells her. I feel sorry for the doctors and nurses who have give to uni for years and years and have to put up with 'AI told me'.

I don't think posters understand just how dangerous type 1 diabetes can be it csn be fatal if left untreated so its better feeling a bit daft than the alternative!

And your medical qualifications would be ? If OP had genuine concerns that T1D was possible then she did the right thing. It’s absolutely not the same thing as people who regularly use their A&E as an alternative to GP for minor ailments.

I would not sit in A&E at 2am with a well child when the concern for which I visited had been all but ruled out.

God no. My experience with them is that they say they will phone you back and 4 hours later they phone you back and say to go to A&E anyway.

If AI is correct, this is a medical emergency

Stop using AI to make medical diagnoses! From your description, this was not a medical emergency at all.

MsJemimaPuddleDuck · 10/07/2025 07:41

Those saying she overreacted, type one diabetes killed a little girl called Lyla Story from Hull. She was diagonsed by her GP with tonilistisis in May 2025 16 hours later she very sadly passed away in her sleep next her to parents from DKA.

op didnt overreact, if anyone ever suspects type one its always ALWAYS best to get it checked out.

She has wasted ED time by using AI to make a diagnosis and then freaking out about a well child who wet the bed once!
