To move to Newport South Wales?

Whoopdedoop · 08/07/2025 22:28

Thinking about moving here to be closer to family. Was considering 30/40 miles to the South or East of Bristol, but realising that you can get a lot more for your money in Wales.

I’d appreciate some opinions and where to consider/where to avoid. Budget around 250k, theee beds and a garden. Approaching retirement.

Thanks.

Will you be working in Bristol? A lot of people priced out of Bristol opt for Newport but the traffic can be heavy on M4 westbound at rush hour. However you get a lot more for your money. 280k for a 3 bed.
I cannot believe the size of this garden.

Chepstow would be nicer

Pomegranatecarnage · 08/07/2025 22:59

Avoid Bettws, Ringland, Dyffryn and St Julian’s.

PashaMinaMio · 08/07/2025 23:02

Newport?
Awful city but that’s just my opinion. I agree with previous poster, avoid St Julian’s.
Bassaleg is ok. I’ve got family there.

thevoiceoffrustration · 08/07/2025 23:12

Newport is dreadful. Just no.

Easipeelerie · 08/07/2025 23:13

Caerleon might be nice.

No, both working from home.

It's a bloody dump! Celtic Manor is OK though lol.

PangolinPan · 08/07/2025 23:29

A couple of my friends have moved there, and they're perfectly happy. I don't know the areas they are in but the housing itself is fine.

Youremylobster86 · 08/07/2025 23:31

Ridgeway, Rogerstone and Bassaleg are lovely areas. The city centre itself is a dump.

Fangdango · 08/07/2025 23:32

Lots of reasonable neighborhoods in Newport as well as some rough parts. Very handy indeed for Cardiff, Bristol and some stunning wildlife. You could do a lot worse.

Chepstow’s pretty pricey since the Bridge 5ollswent. Don’t think OP would get a three bed with a garden in her budget.

Whatifitallgoesright · 08/07/2025 23:52

Great people. They can't half talk though.

Aquestiontoponder · 08/07/2025 23:55

No, do not live in Newport. I love nearby (not Newport) and it's got an awful reputation.
Magor/Undy/Chepstow are all lovely.

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/07/2025 23:57

That looks like a separate plot to the side ? is that part of the large garden mentioned.

Aquestiontoponder · 08/07/2025 23:59

You may get something in Caldicot/Rogiet within budget.

Since the Bridge Tolls went, that should be.

Newport is considered to be on the up.

@MasterBeth this is the only thing I can ever think of when I think of Newport, it was genius. 😂

Hmm I think they are always trying to make improvements. It's got a lot of very rough and deprived areas. It's definitely not somewhere I would want to live. The outskirts aren't too bad (Caerleon, Bassaleg) but the rest of it, no!

spiderlight · 09/07/2025 00:06

Newport isn't really a place I'd want to live. Caldicot is much nicer.

This is the cheapest three bed I could find in Caldicot and the only one within OP’s budget. . Not much of a garden.

I’d absolutely avoid Newport, the inner city areas have more crime than in Cardiff. Lots of better areas close by that others have mentioned though.

handsomeworm · 09/07/2025 01:05

Yeah, it's cheaper than Bristol for a reason. Not somewhere you'd choose to live if there were other options.
