To move to Newport South Wales?

Whoopdedoop · 08/07/2025 22:28

Thinking about moving here to be closer to family. Was considering 30/40 miles to the South or East of Bristol, but realising that you can get a lot more for your money in Wales.

I’d appreciate some opinions and where to consider/where to avoid. Budget around 250k, theee beds and a garden. Approaching retirement.

Thanks.

Don’t do it. It’s not nice.

Now if it was Newport, New South Wales…..it’s paradise!!

EBearhug · 09/07/2025 01:42

South Wales yes, but Newport? It wouldn't be my first choice.

Whoopdedoop · 09/07/2025 07:50

Thanks for all your opinions - I’ll start considering the towns close by and the outskirts.

I’ve got great memories of the Duffryn area - big Asda there 🙌

CallingDistance · 09/07/2025 08:01

Look at Duffryn/Alway/Ringland/Crindau areas

Avoid Bettws, Ringland, Dyffryn and St Julian’s.

Duffryn has a nice Asda but I agree with Bettws - I think this poster’s being bit harsh re Duffryn - I don’t know St Julian’s

You beast me to it!! Grin

MaryGreenhill · 09/07/2025 08:25

Chepstow definitely.
Newport is awful. Full of drug addicts , the homeless and a lot of problems with crime and anti social behaviour. I know it very well.

hellswelshy · 09/07/2025 08:27

Hmm I wouldn't personally, but as pps have said, there are nice areas on the outskirts- Caerleon, Rogerstone, Ridgeway. Only 15mins out of Newport are nicer areas, Penhow for example but not sure on prices there. Stay clear of the centre and areas like Pill, Duffryn and Bettws. Cwmbran is very close and nicer areas there.

Duffryn is ok imo - huge Asda store is a big plus - although I agree Pill and Bettws

Lookingforwardto2025 · 09/07/2025 08:31

We lived there for 8 years and have many happy memories but we didn't feel safe leaving our house after dark. If you could live in Allt-yr-yn and never go into any other part it could be ok. However I am not sure your budget would get you allt-yr-yn.

If the best thing you can say about a place is "it's got a big Asda", I'm not sure that's a ringing endorsement.

TomatoSandwiches · 09/07/2025 12:23

Magor is nice, but quiet but you may prefer that, I wouldnt live in Newport if you paid me though.

1offnamechange · 09/07/2025 12:42

Agree that I've never seen anything wrong with duffryn- just seems like your bog standard normal modern housing estate, although it's next to Tredegar house (one of the very few NT places in south wales) which is a nice walk.

If schools and good transport links aren't the main concerns for you then you've for a lot of options really.

Greenqueen40 · 09/07/2025 12:54

Newports dreadful and you won't get much for your budget if you start expanding your search towards the bridge. Magor, Undy, Penhow will all be expensive, Caldicot maybe at a push. No chance in Chepstow!

Watto1 · 09/07/2025 13:03

As others have said, there are nice bits and not so nice bits. Caerleon, Ponthir, Langstone, Christchurch, Ridgeway, Allt-yr-yn and Bassaleg are good. Avoid Pillgwenlly (Pill) and Bettws. The city centre itself is a bit run down but Cardiff, Cwmbran and Bristol are all in striking distance for shopping.

TheDisillusionedAnarchist · 09/07/2025 13:26

Yes come to Newport, poor reputation so housing is cheap but actually really lovely. Lots of free community stuff going on, really friendly and community focused compared to say Cardiff and not so snobby as Bristol.

Nobody including the residents think it’s paradise so lots of motivation for improving things and shared moaning. Very artsy and accessible to everything from other cities (Cardiff, Bristol, London) to the countryside to the beach.

CallingDistance · 09/07/2025 16:32

I lived on Aberthaw Road in Ringland for years - absolutely loved it - great sense of community

Thefrenchconnection1 · 09/07/2025 16:36

I live near here. There are some pockets you want to avoid but drive around, feel the vibe. Lots of estates and also lots of older properties. Depends on what your priorities are! Newport has better transport links than Magor, undy, Caldicot if you need public transport, for example.

Me neither and although I am late to the party on this thread, the particular Asda that was referred to as a “big” - actually “huge” - Asda is overstating it too.
I double-checked it was one I’d been to and I was right. I’ve gone there for a pit stop a few times (it’s very close to junction 28 of the M4). According to a quick search, that Asda store is just over 40,000 square feet. It’s your average outskirts of a town centre size store; the ones that shut at 10pm (as it appears the Newport branch does). There’s one just off junction 32 of the M4 and that’s over double the size.

Supermarkets aside, Newport isn’t somewhere I’d move to. A friend’s relatives, who live in a relatively new estate, had a horrendous Brookside Close-esque experience. I don’t want to give any specifics to respect their privacy but it’s bad.
The centre isn’t much to write home about and traffic around the area is a ballache.

SquashPenguin · 08/08/2025 06:13

Newport is a shithole. I live in the valleys which get a terrible rep but I worked in Newport for six years and you couldn’t pay me to live there.Im from Bristol myself so I appreciate the house price problem but honestly Newport is just vile.

ThePoshUns · 08/08/2025 06:19

Newport has some nice parts. If I was retired I would live Fields Road or Ridgeway. Malpas and Caerleon are nice areas.
if avoid Caldicot/ Magor they are just dormitory areas for Bristol, dull .
you could look at Cwmbrân. More pleasant than Newport.
This is a nice area with local shops and a beautiful park.

It depends on your lifestyle. For us, a couple with no kids who want nice amenities close by that we can walk to - absolutely not (I could handle Rogerstone by the skin of my teeth as we could go to the Tiny Rebel tap room!)

If you're a family who are mainly at home and drive everywhere, it might be OK.

The market in the centre has been redeveloped recently and they've done an amazing job. But it's still in Newport...

Are you English?

Friends live in a Newport. They travelled to Bristol last week to watch the women's football as all the local pubs were cheering on Spain.

Friends find locals are lovely but on mass find any opportunity to have a pop at the English it gets draining after a while, think they've been there about 10-15 years

Pilateshappy · 08/08/2025 08:49

Newport has a bad reputation. I moved to Newport from Pembrokeshire and have to say I've had no issues here. The city centre has lots of restaurants and shops and I feel perfectly safe here. The biggest downside is the lack of green space in the city centre.
