To think drivers are some of the most self-centred people around?

I say this as someone who drives but seriously, the lack of awareness, the entitlement, the impatience… it’s mad. Whether it’s parking, refusing to slow down near schools or acting like cyclists/pedestrians are an inconvenience, it’s like the moment people get behind a wheel, empathy shuts off.

AIBU to think cars bring out the worst in people?

Only some?

Fair. I was being polite.

Motorists are a superior class of person who must not be obstructed.

Or there has been a serious unreported escape of inmates from Broadmoor

taxguru · 08/07/2025 19:56

Yes, it does for SOME people, just like SOME cyclists are arrogant and don't think the rules apply to them either. In fact, even walkers often ignore rules by crossing roads when the pedestrian crossing lights are against them, or not looking. You can't just say a certain group of people do it - the reality is that SOME people in all groups are arrogant, ignore rules, etc.

Zov · 08/07/2025 19:58

YABU to not say cyclists are much worse. Not just random ones who cycle to work - or the shops, and go out with their kids... I mean the lycra clad MEN who hang around in big groups, cycling 4 abreast on main roads, and country lanes. Absolute dickheads.

Dbank · 08/07/2025 20:04

I totally agree, it reflects a general selfishness in society.

I think people are less prepared to call it out these days, so driving like a cock has become acceptable to the vast majority.

Summerhillsquare · 08/07/2025 20:04

Many of the problems children face today (obesity, lack of confidence and independence, anxiety, loneliness) didn't occur previously because they walked or cycled to school, to see pals and so on. Now it's too dangerous to do so due to 'other' drivers, so they are driven.

verycloakanddaggers · 08/07/2025 20:08

There's research on this, being inside the box makes people feel insulated and less connected to people outside the car.

PoliteSquid · 08/07/2025 20:16

Middle aged men in Lycra are a fucking menace on the roads. Round here they spend all weekend riding in the middle of rural roads around blind corners into oncoming traffic - selfish arseholes.

I’ll stay an entitled/selfish car driver!

yakkity · 08/07/2025 20:29

Some drivers are appalling people. As are sone cyclists, some mothers, some greengrocers and some retail staff. Not sure what the point I’m trying to make is 🤪

OonaStubbs · 08/07/2025 20:39

I am a good driver but there are too many bad drivers on the road. Everyone else seems to be either a speeding maniac or tootling around at a snail's pace.

Some Florists. Absolute wrong uns.

And some piano tuners.

AluckyEllie · 08/07/2025 20:45

Also, why is everyone driving a ford ranger nowadays? And there is never ever anything in the truck bed either. I live in the suburbs of
a big town too, not rural America or the outback!

This.

SO many threads on MN in the past few months seem to lump everyone together as if they were operated by one brain.

Well cyclists often ARE an inconvenience and it can be maddening, particularly when they have a carbon fire bike, a load of expensive gear and are cycling somewhere very inappropriate (happens a lot round me). Those people aren’t cycling because they need it as a mode of transport, they are entitled wealthy generally middle aged plus men avoiding their family - go and find the toe path if you want to cycle for a hobby and get out of the way on this windy road!

If the cyclist is on an old beat up push bike wearing a Parker and battling rain I have more sympathy - they clearly need to be cycling.

BananaCaramel · 08/07/2025 20:59

Cross post with @PoliteSquid !! Totally agree with you

jaws33 · 08/07/2025 21:10

I got use to the lack of indicators but now i'm noticing people in the wrong lines, turning my way around a corner or moving into my lane but still no fucking indicators!

Bridport · 08/07/2025 21:30

A new development here on Sunday mornings is a bunch of lycra clad men touring the country lanes in some kind of pound shop peleton. They ride five abreast so nobody can pass them for miles and the whole area slows to a steady 12 miles an hour behind them whilst they bawl at each other and suck water through a straw from a lycra hump on their back.

All of them have helmet cams. Who watches that shit back? Don't get me started on their shoes. Goat's hooves with pink over socks pulled up to calf height.

Lonelycrab · 08/07/2025 21:32

I prefer people on skateboards.

They’re nice Smile

StarlightRobot · 08/07/2025 21:36

I find illegal parking around schools really shocking. At my dd’s school, parents continue to park on double yellows to be as close to the school as possible, in spite of repeated warnings by the school. It’s so selfish but I am also shocked by how little shame they have. I would never be as brazen.

JohnofWessex · 08/07/2025 22:20

There is I suggest a certain type of driver in an expensive car who I am sure are members of the Socialist Workers Party attempting to be rich gits so that us plebs rise in revolt against their disgusting entitled behaviour and overthrow the Government

ForBreezySloth · 08/07/2025 19:53

Are you self centred when driving?

scalt · 08/07/2025 22:36

Replace the word “drivers” with “mumsnetters”, and I’ll agree.

VimesandhisCardboardBoots · 08/07/2025 22:40

Some people are dickhead. Those people are dickheads whether they're behind the wheel, on a bike, walking, or on a mobility scooter.

It's just a lot easier to spot them being dickheads when they're in control of a 2 ton hunk of metal.

Greenshed · 09/07/2025 18:42

Generalising too much, really. Yes, some drivers are inconsiderate, but not all. This is true of any group though - drivers, cyclists, pedestrians. Some are extremely inconsiderate, but by no means all. I would even venture to say the majority are not inconsiderate.
