Hate my haircut, not sure what to do?

It was a slightly longer one-length bob. At the salon I told the hairdresser not to cut anything off the length as I was trying to grow it out, but she said 'I'll just cut a bit off so it's fresh'. That's my fault because at that point I should've been firm and said no, but she cut an inch off all over.

It's very blunt all over, and unless I straighten it it flicks out just like the Miss Hooley character, it looks awful.

It was meant to have choppy layers through the top to give it more volume and a fringe, but it looks almost mullet-like, and looks horrendous with the flicks.

I can just about tie it up but the nape hair is too short so it just looks weird. There isn't really anything I can do with it and I don't think I'm ugly, but I just don't think my face is pretty enough to pull it off.
I hate it but it's a chin length bob, there's not really much I can do. Maybe I could try an asymmetrical pixie or something but again I don't have the confidence, and looking around not all but many women have at least shoulder length hair.

Feel miserable tbh, it'll take me a year I reckon to get to shoulder length.

Can you get some nice pins/slides and lift it up/back at the sides maybe?

simsbustinoutmimi · 05/07/2025 17:18

Do you have a photo?

I would be demanding a refund (or at least complaining) and going to another hairdresser to see if they can fix it, even if it means going a little bit shorter.

Yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahh · 05/07/2025 17:21

Here is the picture so you can see how much it flicks out.

Looking into extensions, though I don't know if they'd fit them on chin length bobs.

Can you not run straighteners over it turn it flat or under?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 05/07/2025 17:29

I’d wait it out especially as you are trying to grow out and not do extensions. How long ago was the cut? It does look like there are layers in the picture you posted so that may be contributing to the flip.

I think bottom flips are cute but can understand if you don’t like it.

ETA: My hair does a similar but mor pronounced flip if it’s a certain length so I’m well acquainted with it. Usually a round brush while drying would sort it (for a while anyway. I have a lot of natural curl and the ones at the nape of my neck are the most aggressive)

Yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahh · 05/07/2025 17:30

The cut was only 9 days ago..I do straighten it but if I do that every day my hair will be fried.

I don't think I can put up with this for months on end, hate seeing it in the mirror.

Sorry not a straightener myself so not up on terminology… are you using a straightening iron or round brush?

Straightening irons

I don't think anything bad will happen if you straighten it daily, but is it still flicking out if you straighten it ?

Holgen · 05/07/2025 17:37

Obviously cant comment on the whole as it just one side, but it looks like a cute flick out - sort of french riveria styled bob from a movie. If you weren’t going for that I can see how this annoys you. Looks like you have naturally wavy hair, so when you cut it short it loses the weight holding the hair straighter. Perhaps look at wavy lob styles, grow it out a few weeks and get it recut.

in the meantime, if it really annoys you, wear lots of slidey grips to pin it back

happydayzahead · 05/07/2025 17:38

If you cut it shorter then you'll end up in this situation again in a few months wishing you had let it grow. I would either go into a different salon and explain to see if someone there could help you maintain length but make you feel better about it.

As long as you are using a decent heat protector then straightening on a low heat won't fry it. My Auntie actually uses a rounded hot brush to flip her ends under as they also flick out!

Straightening irons

Gotcha… then add in a good high moisture product and/or alternate with round brushing while drying and your hair shouldn’t be damaged.

fourelementary · 05/07/2025 17:41

Could you curly girl it? No drying- scrunch in some curl product when wet and work with the waves - small clips at the front to take it off your face?

saltinesandcoffeecups · 05/07/2025 17:44

I can commiserate with you. My hair has a length at the crown which makes me look like a lightbulb 💡😦.

In March I had to shave my head due to chemo and it’s just starting to grow back. I know in a few months I’m going to look like a crazy electric mascot and I’m pretty sure it will be more traumatic than the shaved head.

I really like the flick - very French. My hairdresser friend was saying the other day that this style is very fashionable at the moment.

roseymoira · 05/07/2025 17:58

It looks a nice length. I’d use the straighteners to put some soft waves in it instead of having it straight

Kitkatfiend31 · 05/07/2025 18:23

Take spirulina to boost your hair growth.

Redheadedstepchild · 05/07/2025 20:54

Oh, OP, I do feel for you. There's the hairstyle in itself but also the fact that you weren't listened to. That's the bit that really smarts.

The whole conversation that went, extremely politely, from you, "I would like this please."

"Oh yes, I see."

Then she went and did completely the opposite.

Hair appointments aren't cheap and now you feel like you've been butchered.

I bet you were so nice that you even left a tip whilst you were still in a state of shock.

Anyway, we'll get through this. I've been looking for online tutorials that show you how to put up short hair into a bun whilst hiding the annoying, "nape fringe" but I'm sure that you've been looking for them yourself.

How absolutely infuriating. How much did it cost you for this wonderful, relaxing moment of self care and feeling better about yourself?

AvidJadeShaker · 05/07/2025 20:56

I like the flicking out, could you play around with putting bits behind the ears, adding earrings, pretty slides etc.

schoolsoutforever · 05/07/2025 21:01

I really like it! French bob style - very fashionable and cute (mine is similar!). But if you don't then, agree, get the round brush or straighteners (easier) to force the curl under.

Mikart · 05/07/2025 21:01

I actually think it looks lovely!

Yeahyeahyeahyeahyeahh · 05/07/2025 21:09

Thank you, here is the front to give a clearer picture. It's dreadful, fortunately I only paid £26.

Oh… I get the mullet remark now. Yeah those layers look short.

(Sorry to say but this is what I was describing with the lightbulb hair above, but I think I have a bigger head than you😕)

Ok… I’d bite the bullet and let it grow. Maybe pins or little clippies for a while. I think you’re right that pixie is the only fix, but you’ll be right back to this stage soon enough.

AvidJadeShaker · 05/07/2025 21:21

Could you try pinning the sides up and keeping the nice flick down?

Or wear it all messy?
